Seeing how Essex and her team push unlocks secrets to readers’ delight. The writing hones in on the personal blow dealt with Dagmar’s revelations. It sets a course to an intense final act.

Once the group descends into the darkness of truth, the pacing picks up. Readers are hit with great payoffs. This pushes Essex and her partners into uncomfortable waters. Desperate times call for action. The story takes flight as a move is made with dire intentions. Thompson throws more twists into this segment. Its’ fallout perfectly caps off the dangers. The epilogue ties up loose ends while leaving much to reflect on. There is no better way to say goodbye for now, but hopefully not for too long.

McClaren opens the chapter up with simple panels. The color usages takes them up a few levels. Jumping deep into the chapter, Dagmar’s questioning hits with a unique panel drawing out memories. It is a sequence that connects with readers, allowing big payoffs.

The world of Kiros is a visual win in its own right. McClaren makes each vision of the city stand out. This rings true when dealing with The Heights. The near full page image pops as it launches a final standoff. This mood carries into the drastic move made by the guilty party. All the expressions by Essex and her team cover many emotions. It elevates the scene to new levels as readers watch. The fallout out teases a gory situation but structure leaves it in the minds’ eye. Readers can sense the emotional height slowly lifting. A full circle moment caps off the chapter with a defiant message narrating it. Nothing but a huge win for fans of this series.

The latest saga of Phaedra Essex comes to a thunderous close with its’ strong arc ending chapter. Thompson’s slow burn writing brings readers an impactful ending. There is no denying the rage and pain being unleashed. What it ultimately creates is a man looking to deal with his own trauma.

This portion dives heavily into a “Year One” phase. Snyder paces events out evenly. Readers watch a try and fail timeline as Batman evolves. There are some nods to his previous origin but nothing feels replicated. The writing walks the audience through this growth. There are moments focusing on Wayne’s drive to be better. It all leads into a debut of the finished product. This leads into a surprising ending. Judging by the last page, there is more pain about to surface as the Bat continues to spread his wings.

Walta steps in for art duties on this chapter. The opening flashback pours with emotion with a young Wayne in court. The close-ups reveal the anger built by his father’s loss. Gears shift into a closer present with a Batman in action. There’s no shortage of brutality as Batman attacks. Walta’s attention to detail is big in this moment. Seeing claws and fangs appear shows the humble beginnings. The coloring keeps a grim atmosphere. This leads seeing how Bruce grows into the Bat. Readers watch as the young man takes out his pain on criminals in style.

Batman’s attack on a gun-running shipment is classic Dark Knight. Walta’s art leads the quick pace into a violent end. Martin’s use of red amplifies the conflict. It leads into more personal moments as Bruce deals with what he is becoming. Once at this stage, the Batman’s first “real” mission is gifted a strong full page image. With two issues left, Zdarksy is leaving it all on the table with this story. Juggling multiple heavyweight rogues is a task. The writing pulls it off with ease and excitement. Riddler comes across as the psychotic genius that he is best as. The battle of wits between him and Batman is as classic as it gets. Its’ resolution provides a very unique twist to an already heavily layered issue.

Zdarsky also gives Jim Gordon’s tale a fitting end as well. Making him a very grey character in his arc worked immensely. Readers have seen a very different side of the last good cop in Gotham. His arc ends with a heroic stand, even if he hasn’t been 100% noble. This all circles back to Batman in the end. As more clues come into focus, Zdarsky drops one more bombshell before ending his long run with a sure-fire bang!

Daniel steps in for Jimenez on art duties. Events escalate quickly as Commander Star stands tall via a mid page panel. Batman and Gordon fight their way through the police to stop Riddler. The electric panels pop with action. Daniel flips the tempo with Riddler and Kull. Readers watch as Riddler’s ego fuels his insanity. There are vintage deathtraps pitting Batman’s knowledge against the odds. None greater than the realization of who is pulls the strings.

Gordon’s resolution comes with a heavy burden. The art reflects the pain his actions cause. This becomes the fuel for his assault on Riddler. After being in a morally neutral spot, Gordon demonstrates the hero aspects many associate him with. One moment will jump at fans before the close kicks off. With events ramped up, the final image delivers a shocking reveal before leading into the finale.

Zdarsky heads into the finale of his run with an incredible set-up. The writing keeps readers locked in with action and surprises. Daniel, Morey and Cowles ramp up the intensity with each panel. Expect nothing but fireworks with this story’s conclusion!

Loeb puts the Boy Wonder front and center for this issue. Batman is wounded and barely escapes the Falcone mansion. Crashing (literally) into the Batcave, Alfred must attempt surgery. The scenario is all too familiar to Grayson. Seeing his parents die in front of him bares an eerie resemblance here. Loeb plays into the connection with the narration. This sparks Robin to pick up the case, whether he’s ready or not.

The journey takes him to a very recognizable place. Inside the Arkham walls, Grayson attempts to fill the shoes of Batman, Readers watch as he struggles but remains vigilant. This overshadows the brutality of Solomon Grundy’s story portion. The larger investment is with Grayson grasping for straws to help. His desperation leads him to one person for help. It is only fitting of who it is. The resolution is perfect Batman storytelling. Once concluded, the final pages set the stage for an inevitable showdown. There is much to enjoy with the writing here.

Chiang (Paper Girls, Human Target) steps in for art duties. The two page splash of Batman crashing into the Cave sends a loud message. It starts this chapter off with a sense of danger. Mixing in the Graysons’ accident via panels adds fuel to that fire. Moving to a nine-panel page illustrates how Grayson is reacting. It works to carry him to his next portion of the story.

Once at Arkham, the half page with the Calendar Man shows his determination for answers. It leads to a confrontation that is very fitting. The result is a “family portrait” for the ages. Chiang and Stewart also craft a heartfelt Alfred moment to conclude this section. It is in difference to Grundy’s rage as he pursues a suspect in the Gotham PD. Those panels add more intrigue before the close. Once there, a full page image of a popular Rogue seals this chapter up for its next round.

The latest “Halloween” chapter casts the spotlight on a near death in the family. Loeb’s writing shows Dick Grayson treading through the chaotic Gotham landscape. Chiang (along with Stewart and Starkings) builds up the emotional ware of a dying Batman on his most loyal supporters. This series continues to set a high bar for storytelling.

Once on the scene, the case becomes more complex. With a possible clue found, readers think there’s a break. It gets pushed onto the back burner with another matter at hand.

Scarlett’s connection with Bruce takes center stage. Taylor writes her character with much mystery. It keeps the audience guessing to what she is really about. As Batman furthers his investigation, it leads him into a blurred path. Taylor find a way to bring some emotion out of the stoic knight. The results lead into a desperate search for truth. Knowing their connection, readers watch as the final pages throw a new wrinkle into play. It leaves Batman in a state rarely seen. How this goes now is anyone’s guess.

Janin unleashes the dynamic duo onto the case with style. The full page image flies them into the uneasy scene. Their moods swing to anger when their search is interrupted. Readers watch as the facial reactions grow darker before the fists fly. The fight concludes with an equally impressive half panel.

From here, Bruce Wayne takes center stage. Following his fascination with Scarlett’s offer, he’s taken the plunge. The questioning that follows throws Scarlett off. When fans think of Batman, many images pop into mind. Caped Crusader. Dark Knight. One description might stand out from the rest. “World’s Greatest Detective”. Seeing the evolution of his skills has always been exciting to watch.

A new series looks to showcase the early days with a unique format. “Dark Patterns” is a 12 issue series spotlighting four very unique and grounded cases. This is a whole new look at Batman as he starts to etch his legacy.

As the pace picks up, Watters adds more twists into the plot. Readers will appreciate the Alfred injections into the chapter. It is a factor sorely missed in current stories. Their conversation is classic, leading Batman into the final act. Once the killer is revealed, it spirals the case into a whole new direction. The closing page offers up a crack in the case, but leaves with much to ponder in the meantime.

Sherman and Farrell craft a haunting feel for the streets of Gotham. The opening pages are a mix of near full images tagged with small panels. Readers feel a sense of uncertainty as Batman suits up. This leads to a fantastic credits page. The full image of the Bat signal in the sky kicks off the mystery in style.

Dastmalchian brings Vincent Velcro front and center for this issue. The dive into the backstory spotlights the vampire’s ill fated rescue attempt. His conversation with Dr. West reflects his loss and gives some clarity on to why he’s willing to work with Dr. West. Once events shift gears, the chapter heads into the combustible personalities put together for the mission at hand.

There is a certain element of “honor amongst theives” that carries in this series. Dr. West’s rally cry strikes where it needs to. Her hand is forced as Wanda (Shrieve) stumbles across a dead monster morgue in the base. Ultimately, the talk is swayed with orders of action. The latter portion of the book give time to the larger DCU stars involved, but events feel a touch rushed heading into the close. Once at the conclusion, the final page lands on a solid cliffhanger. It does its’ job leaving readers wanting more but could have been more impactful on its’ execution.

Hervás and Guimarães present Velcro’s rescue attempt with some striking imagery. The full page shot of him taking fire kicks things off in a big way. It’s followed by a more reactionary look with seeing his plans fall short. The expressions he gives speaks loudly to readers.

Another moment is Wanda’s discovery of the monster morgue. The near full page shot hits with its reveal. This shifts events towards a flashback involving Morgaine Le Fey. The full page image gives a clearer picture of Medusa’s past while sorting her place with the unit. Brainiac gets his fair share of panel time as he works in shadows. This boils over to Zatanna’s part. The closing image leads into a starling unveiling. How things play from here is literally anyone’s guess.

FINAL POINT: 7.5

With a solid portion of the story devoted to one character, the latest chapter deals with a pacing issue. Dastmalchian’s writing works with reaching the audience on Velcro’s story. The art brings into focus the troubled past with hopes for a better future. The only downside is Brainiac and Zatanna’s parts felt rushed. That said, the story looks to pick up speed with the mission finally starting its engines.

This leads him into another attempt to save a possible victim. Action reminds Batman of how human he truly is. It also brings up another lingering theme of this current arc.

The question of rejuvenation gets a surprising conversation out of his best friend. Seeing Taylor tackle a Batman/Superman debate leads into a new direction with big ramifications. Readers might be a touch shocked at Superman’s response but it fits in place here. This kicks off a new stat quo (so to speak). Seeing how the fallout leads Batman into his investigation provides another classic confrontation. This gets upstaged by the close. The chapter ends with a definitive statement as to how human Batman has truly become.

Janin opens the issue with a few nightmare panels. It reflects the guilt Batman carries. This leads into a fast paced chase involving Robin. The escalation of the reveal will floor readers. Way and Simon never rush the pace in this area. The reveals keep driving a deeper wound into an already shaken Loo. When it stops, its an intense moment that leads into darker territory.

Once things move back to present time, the state of the Gardens comes into focus. Zerc’s actions are cold and unforgiving as he nears the finish line. His breaking of Loo sends her into a shocking direction. This allows the writing to take the story to its’ ultimate ending. With events in motion, Zerc unveils his overall scheme. This leads to an uncertain sense as the final act ushers in the final challenge for the Garden and its inhabitants.

Weston and Stewart peel back the layers of Loo’s broken soul with this chapter. The flashback sequences carry the grey coloring reflecting her sorrow. Loo’s reactions range from shock to sadness. Readers watch as she tries to comprehend what her actions led to. Its’ the strongest portion of the story. The art handles the moment tastefully while conveying the ramifications in an extreme manner.

The rest of the sotry deals with Zerc’s manipulations. His dealing of “loose ends” is given a near full page. Nothing is held back on the levels in which Zerc has gone. His address to the residents is blunt and filled with his bravado. Zerc’s facial expressions vary, leading the readers into his closing play. Even with Loo’s new “home” panels, the parting image seals the deal as the end is quickly approaching for the gardens.

Loo’s tragic background comes to the forefront as the Gardens brace for impact. The writing delivers an emotional charged open that will hit the audience and not let go. Weston and Stewart orchestrate the strong visuals to support Loo’s troubled past. With one issue left, anything (and I mean ANYTHING) can happen at the Gardens now!

Seeing Queen Taline in prison hits readers as they process the chaos surrounding the visit. Knowing the history between the two, Essex appears behind the eightball. Taline knows what’s coming and Essex isn’t ready.

This causes a shift in direction for the trio of Cloaks. The writing brings out the best and worst opinions of Essex as she tries being proactive. Her conversation with Iona is tense and hostile in certain aspects. It’s the guilt of Essex’s actions that start breaking her from the inside. This bridges to a surprise closing. The revelation in the parting panel leaves more mystery as the case slips further away from the Cloaks.

The tense feel comes to a biol when the mysterious figure crashes the scene.

Dunford debuts the lead character with a big splash. It is very heroic in fashion. There is just enough revealed to connect with the audience. The writing also leaves a few outstanding questions to ponder before the close. At this stage, the story shifts gears to a steady finish. It perfectly walks the line of too much or too little. After this conclusion, readers will be wanting another round with “The Boogeyman” asap.

Catraca slowly builds up the horror with the opening pages. It’s capped off with a bold full page of the monster’s attack. This event leads into a window visual with “missing” posters. Readers can sense the eerie build growing from here for Andrue and Lani. With a simple eye-reflection panel, the book jumps into danger with its’ next phase.

The writing doesn’t tip off too much involving the “big bad”. Zerc comes across as desperate, yet cut-throat to achieve his plans. The health of the Gardens is on;y an afterthought in this case. Allowing Loo to come and save the day casts her and her abilities in a new light. Her showcase leads into a sold closing act. With Zerc digging in deeper, the secrets of Loo may be the make or break point for what has already been a lights-out hit.

Weston and Stewart bring a distinct look to the visuals of the Gardens’ residents. The opening page captures the spirit of the Gardens. It is quiet, reserve and has a bigger story lying in wait. Some of the more “unique” residents continue to steal scenes, assisting the one-liners.

The flashback pages break from the formula. Using black and white shades is an easy segway into the close. Loo letting loose with her abilities comes across as a big event. Each panel carries a big weight and equally important reactions. This flows into the final page where it appears Zerc is ready to make his move.

It also shows how dangerous this law has allowed people to become. Some of the situations are all too real in this day and age. Even someone like No/One can’t save the day here. Key supporting characters in the story such as Alanna Paige and Detective Harper have noteworthy sub-plots here. Taking a side tour to focus on Prop 87 only raise the stakes at who’s behind the chaos. Seeing where the final pages lead, the writing team has perfectly set the table for a show-stopping finale.

Borges and Englert have done fantastic work in this series but this time, they might have really outdone themselves. There are many highly sensitive scenarios played out with Prop 87 being law. The art will strike a chord with how intense and disturbing the citizens of Pittsburgh have become. It never lets the emotional weight rest as events progress forward.

The writing delves into the manic behavior of Jolie. Risking hunters on her personal vendetta showcases how unhinged she has become. Maven pulls out some huge surprises as their battle commences. As for Jace and René, the writing shifts into making both very similar in actions. Their banter is very driven and strikes a few nerves. This builds towards a strong finish with a few tricks up the sleeve. Seeing how things are left, there is now way to even guess how the war will end.

What unfolds next is a soul searching moment for Linnea. Dealing with grief, she goes through many emotions. One resident makes an ill-timed confrontation. This leads to Linnea making some drastic choices. The fallout sets her on a path where there is no turning back.

Readers watch as Linnea sees only one way to conclude the cult’s sacrifices. It builds towards a shocking conclusion that has been a staple of this series. Just when readers think they know the ending, the final act proves otherwise. Prepare for a final series of pages that will have fans talking and recapping what they just read.

Escapism becomes the main topic of their talk. Their conversation doesn’t go the way Danny likes when his little brother Matty is mentioned.

It’s interrupted when Danny arrives at the home of Leo Black. As he walks inside, he finds Leo dead in a chair. A call for help is made but never completed. Danny ends the call and takes Black’s tangling cigarette and leaves. As he leaves, he becomes fascinated with Black’s crocodile shoes…

What happens next will lock readers in for the long haul. Events move fast as more pieces slowly become revealed. It builds for a powerful final act. There are many questions formed as the final page leaves a few thoughts in readers’ minds until next time.

The dynamic with his family is fractured. His brother’s disappearance lingers heavily on what relationship (if any) they have. Once the fallout commences there, readers get an idea of where things are heading. The bookend technique works as to the multiple layers of Danny. The pacing allows readers to become caught up in his evolution. Where it leads from here can only grow readers’ interest in a story behind a troubled soul.

Pal, Delpeche and Carry provide an intense opening to Danny’s story. The beginning series of events hold nothing back. Its’ as graphic and violent as one would think. This becomes a stark contrast to where we see Danny in the middle of the chapter. His mannerisms leave no indication on where his journey goes.

The fascination of the shoes becomes a haunting element. It feels at that moment a switch is hit that should have been left dormant. Knowing where the moment leads, the art team showcases the rage and disillusion Danny tries to disappear in. This leads to a strong closing page. Emma and her team of Lawrence, Skottie, Gleason, and the Paragon welcome Solomon onto their team. Taking down a powerful man like Preston will be no easy feat. Solomon gives a big clue on where to strike at his father. The information gives a big insight into the man who’s ruined Emma’s life.

However, the moment is quickly dashed by The Paragon. He senses that someone has crashed their meeting. The Muscle of the team ushers them away to confront their guest. It is a personal reunion for the Paragon. As readers witnessed last issue, Preston hired the Paragon’s ex-wife to handle his problem.

The mood swiftly changes as Preston sets forth his most dangerous attack yet. Emma’s team needs to scramble quickly. The book speeds towards its’ final set-up with a detour that will have fans’ attention. A new development has been added into the mix. This will either be the deciding factor of victory or the nail in the coffin of Emma’s revenger plan. Fans will have much to look forward to in the finale.

Bendis throws in a few new dynamics before setting the final stage. The addition of Solomon provides a personal element into Emma’s plan. Conversations reflect the unity to take down Preston. It also shows the conflicting personas involved.

The Paragon has been the ultimate wild-card in this story. Seeing his past catch up with him made for a few stand-out moments. This all leads into a strong final act. Seeing the pieces fall into place provides a strong foundation for where the closing leaves readers. Pacing allows a slow, methodical build into the parting image which is a great spot to leave before the finale commences.

Maleev, Herring and Meng welcome fans into Emma’s team meeting with a two page full splash. It’s has a sense of a “welcome new readers” to it but works to showcase the full team. The Paragon displays a few emotions throughout this issue. Seeing the reactions to his ex-wife now enemy raised the tension a few levels.

Emma also has a few panels that break up the seriousness of the situation. Her time conversing with Lawrence comes across as a possible goodbye knowing what is coming. This leads into the closing moments where the panel usage comes into play. Emma’s image repeating itself walks the readers through what she’s envisioning with the plan. This all caps off with the final page. A full page that leaves no doubt where everyone stands heading into the conclusion. It’s high level work that is well known with this series.

Engaging, Clever and Bold. “Masterpiece” can easily be described with those words. With this latest chapter, Bendis, Maleev and the team combine sharp writing with classic imagery to stage all the players into position before charging into the finale. The series is nothing short of its’ title billing every time out.

For this entry, the chess match between Zero Preston and Emma “Masterpiece” Lawford continues onward via Dark Horse Comics. With revenge as his motive, Preston crashes into Lawford’s world. An ordinary teenager finds out quickly she’s anything but. Emma’s parents are legendary thieves. Preston was one of their targets. The ultimate revenge for him means ruining her life. Little did he realize what his actions would cause.

After confronting Preston at his mansion, the favor is returned to Emma and her team. Andrew Garrison the IV leads a group to track down Emma’s presumed location. Once they get inside, the group find no one. All that’s waiting for them is a laptop with a note to “play”.

Emma leaves a video recording. In the message she informs Garrison she has all his hidden information. Readers see the moves set in motion. Emma advises Garrison to quit his chase. If not, how will Preston react knowing he never completed his job?

The answer to that question is interrupted by The Paragon! The imposing figure demonstrates his style of action. He beats the group to a bloody pulp! Once that business is finished, it’s onward to the next phase.

What does Emma have in store now? How will Preston respond to the failure of Garrison? Readers sit ringside as both parties take their plans up a few levels. The final act tips off a few clues as to where the mystery heads now. None will be more impactful than who enters the game on the final page. Just when you think you have all the answers, more questions are thrown into the mix.

Bendis paces the back and forth moments to give readers a closer look into both parties schemes. Emma has emerged as the true heir to her family’s reputation. The dynamic between her set-up for Garrison is through and leads off perfectly for the Paragon to appear. Post the encounter, the story shifts back towards Preston.

The writing reflects his brash defiance that Emma is challenging him. Even with the results of the Paragon’s involvement, Preston looks shaken but refusing to accept his loss. This plays well for the closing act and the drastic measures he takes. Each side gets ample time to shine and this only builds more excitement for what is unfolding within this tale.

Maleev, Herring and Meng give the Paragon a huge entrance into this chapter. Switching from dark Blue to tinted Yellow connects with the change of demeanor and attack. The use of Red also makes the images pop, which is another cool technique.

The page panel used for Preston’s reaction is a complex one that readers will enjoy. The facial reactions vary to Preston finally comprehending what is going on. The grainy footage from the tablet also stands out to amplify his emotions. This builds towards a nice parting shot to throw another twist into a can’t miss story.

With revenge fueling the dangerous game of cat and mouse, the showdown between Lawford and Preston takes things up a few notches. Through flawless writing and exceptional imagery, each party make bold moves to ensure victory. Will it be enough in the end?
