His meeting with Jenny Greenteeth offers a sampling of this new initiative. The story is very different than the traditional Aquaman tales. Adams explores a new use of the hero’s powers. Readers watch as this new ability opens up a sliver of hope. It also introduces a new player in the game. The writing carries the traditional superhero themes. There’s plenty of big action in the mix. Where it finds its’ strength is in the new challenge thrown at Curry. This pushes towards a great cliffhanger ending. There are many elements at play which is nothing but wins for the audience.

The mood never ceases to raise tension. With Alfred’s narration in swing, Batman demonstrates his boldness. The method in which he maneuvers seems all too familiar. Its’ outcome is a fresh take which spirals out of control.

A declaration leads into a massive altercation. Snyder locks readers in as Batman takes the offensive. The result proves the inexperience of a young vigilante. Black Mask is written as an unhinged psychopath pulling all strings. There are no punches pulled. Violence takes over until the final act unfolds. Once here, Wayne’s best plans prove fallible. The outcome steers the story into a dangerous direction. It plays off the counter of Batman’s goals. The results appear that finding hope in Gotham may prove too deadly to chase.

The writing unveils Beth’s internal monologue. There is a sense of fear and worry in the tone. It is a natural reaction as she ventures further into the Injustice world.

Readers also get more insight on Obsidian. Since the first issue, it has been unclear what is truly unfolding. Lemire speeds up the pacing to get through this portion. It doesn’t miss hitting its key points. All roads tie back together with Chapel. The ending is a solid cliffhanger. It is a straight forward superhero ending that keeps the suspense high for what’s next.

Vasquez steps in for art duties with this issue (Guerrero remained on coloring). The faceoff between Chapel and Grundy is given a near full page image. It kickstarts a quick action portion. This gets slowed down for a half panel shot of the Injustice Society. Readers watch as their plans become exposed. It solidly caps off events before switching focus.

Obsidian’s story is more emotion driven. His reactions to his “hospitalization” connect with readers. It loudly states the frustration and doubt of what’s happening. The art team gives a great full page vision of Obsidian back in costume. Story pacing also pushes the art to quickly burn through these moments. The final pages deliver on action and stealing more hope away from the league in their darkest hour. It definitely keeps the vintage feel alive right to the end.

Dr. Mid-Nite is the last hope for the JSA in this fast-moving chapter. Lemire’s writing brings out a new side to the young hero. Vasquez, Guerrero and Wands construct very sleek superhero themed art as the ed of days approach DC’s classic team. Definition superhero storytelling which is always a crowd pleaser.

Readers watch as Palmer’s drive might be more harmful than good.

Captain Atom is growing into a sympathetic figure through this early stage. Pacing continues to tease the eventual turning. It also tries building up a large payoff later. The bear sequence is a surprising one. The fallout seems to get a desired, if not temporary, result. Once events shift back again to the present, the story becomes more clear. Judging by the final pages, there is more mystery getting added to what the endgame here truly is.

Perkins and Lucas starts events off with a full page Atoms image. The pair’s slow decent is clearly written on their faces. It is contrast to the many sides of Captain Atom. With the multiple time jumps, the art conveys the evolution of his current state. This excels when he finds who or what has his powers.

The fallout is tied together with a great full page vision. As the final pages start, the mood shifts back to a grim tone. The Atoms’ quest for answers starts breaking at its seams with the latest issue. Parrott and Ridley peel back more layers to the overall picture. Aaron moves the spotlight to Lois Lane for the majority of the issue. Right from the start, Lane’s journalism skills start appearing in her soldier persona. Readers watch as she starts interviewing Superman witnesses. The quest for knowledge leads her into a needed conversation. General Sam Lane comes across as a gruff, concerned parent. It plays well of Lois’s inquisitive mind. The result ushers in some new (and old faces) into the field.

Readers watch as the Omega Men are introduced. Aaron twists their familiar concept. The run-in starts turning into a “cat and Mouse” confrontation. This only becomes more complicated with Peacemakers. With an inflated cast for this chapter, pacing steers into a direct close. It is vintage Superman that scores big. The end results tie back to a loose plot point.

Seeing Peacemaker Smith go through the Lazarus Corp. protocol makes quite the impression. It may seem telegraphed in parts but doesn’t miss its’ landing. This throws the closing pages in flux. With Superman out of the picture, One Peacemaker does the unthinkable. It is a moment that is sure to come back to haunt Lazarus Corp. later. Where this now leads is anyone’s guess.

Sandoval and Arreola set up the interviews in a very throwback way. Using a 9-panel grid adds more context to what begins here. The slower pace fades when Lois must discipline a Peacemaker. A full page image of Lois handling business launches her portion. The banter with her father conveys another story. Each panel amps Lois’ disinterest in what she’s told. Much like her DCU counterpart, when she’s focused, Lois takes over situation like few others.

The Omega Men are presented in a vastly different light. Their use in this story is much more direct than lax. A near full page reveal shows their leader. Panels reflect the highly intense fight. With a red shroud crashes the party, the action goes even higher. It concludes with a vintage Superman power move. Little does anyone realize that Peacemaker Smith has done wrong. A near full page panel brings the horror front and center. Is the world ready for what’s next?

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

With forces maneuvering. Krypton’s last son hits readers with a very thought provoking issue. Aaron pens a tale of drive hidden behind the action. Sandoval and Arreola lock in on the viewpoint of Lois as the latest chapter moves forward. Readers had better brace for what lies on the last page. Don’t miss it!

BATMAN #157 (DC COMICS)

Gotham City is about to say goodbye to some old friends. After 32 issues, Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jiménez conclude their run on “Batman”. The pair have pushed Bruce Wayne to the edge and back. From “Failsafe” to “Joker: Year One”, there hasn’t been a shortage of exciting tales.

It is no surprise that their final story pulls out all the stops. “The Dying City” has cast a new light on Jim Gordon. Readers watched The Riddler form an uneasy alliance with the Court Of Owls. The result may lead to a global catastrophe. If that wasn’t enough, a new Rogue has entered the game.

BATMAN #157 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tony S. Daniel, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles sees the Dark Knight take one last shot to save Gotham from falling.

In this parting chapter, Zdarsky swings big. The overall sense of failure weighs heavy on both Batman and Gordon. During his run, both have had set-backs. Batman’s strained family relationship. Gordon’s fall from grace. The writing brings out their true selves. This is evident with Batman’s daredevil attempt to stop Kull from returning to Russia with Riddler’s info.

Pacing keeps rising as stakes become insurmountable. Even when there is one victory, the gravity of Gotham’s last stand never leaves the reader. Zdarsky throws in a few layered showdowns towards the closing act. None might be larger than the face-off internally. Between the action is a struggle. It perfectly brings events full circle with both leads. The result is a bittersweet ending. The conversation between Batman and Gordon puts perspective on the past while closing the chapter with new promise. No better way to say goodbye for now but hopefully not forever.

Jiménez is joined by Daniel for this final outing. Right from the start, Jiménez brings a dramatic flair to the aerial escape. Readers can’t help but be swept up in the chase. It concludes with a bold image of Batman lunging at his latest foe. The mid-panel shot throws a huge exclamation point on this portion.

It is equally matched for Daniel’s portions. The showdown between Riddler and Gordon had been building. Seeing both release their anger lives up to the build. It also provides Gordon something he has been searching for: internal acceptance. With his involvement in Mayor Nakano’s death, the art deals with his tortured conscience. Readers get this moment of calm before the main event starts.

Jiménez closes out the action with a brutal fight. Each panel becomes filled with tensions. Batman realizes there is no turning back. The sheer ferocity of this match connects. It leads into a surprising end before the epilogue. Daniel brings out the pent-up feeling from the heroes. Their reactions speak volumes to the guilt they have been carrying. It leaves readers with a spectacular parting image. A full page vision of Batman via Jiménez ends events with a hopeful thought for what’s next. A bittersweet ending indeed.

Seeing Ferris hold her own amongst the DCU’s heavies provides a fun set-up before Jordan crashes the party. With the two getting some quiet time, The writing blends their hero worlds with their relationship. It’s a solid break before events shift towards another familiar face.

Kyle Rayner’s mission with Odyssey leads to another addition to the cast. Readers will be amped up to see who’s added into the book rescue mission. Pacing devotes a lengthy period to get this all established. Once settled, the story briefly spotlights Sorrow’s alliance. There is a larger picture painted in the closing act. The case lead provides more surprises. None might be larger than the final page. It leaves many questions as the latest saga finally starts taking shape.

This issue has three artists on taking the image reigns. The Justice League conflict opens with a full page action splash. It shows the readers how the team is working. Williamson crafts the ultimate lose-lose situation for the Man of Steel. With Lex losing his memory, he is a completely new person. Finding a conscience and sense of humanity has done wonders. Lex’s troubled past is sprinkled in throughout the story. It makes Superman’s dilemma much worse. Giving a sense of sympathy to Luthor will hit readers with an unexpected response.

The story never lets up of the pressure on Superman. This becomes clear when a walk in the park becomes an incident. Superman’s conversation leads into a question of morals with this move. Readers watch as the outcome becomes a larger catalyst than expected. Cracks in the foundation had been forming between the two characters. Superman’s reaction becomes more than realized. After another flashback, the story leads into its’ concluding point. Judging where it appears to be heading, there may not be any good solution for a bad man’s future.

Barrows opens up the issue with a quiet father-daughter moment with the Luthors. It doesn’t take long for some action to creep in. The two page action splash works perfectly here. It allows for the set-up with Superman making the call. A full page splash by Barrows shows what the wrong choice can lead to.

Once events move to the park, the mood lightens until an incident goes down. Superman crashes the scene with a near full page image. The conversation between enemies pours with consequences. Ferreira’s flashback sequences keep adding more layers to that foundation. Readers watch as a half panel tips off where things may lead. The closing act is very deceptive as it appears an issue was addressed. Happiness is fleeting as the pieces start coming together. Readers watch as a full page image delivers a mic drop as the DCU may never be the same again.

The writing presents Catwoman faced with a cursed diamond. Oswalt and Blum lean intot he curse as Selina Kyle struggles to cope. The nightmare set-up swings quickly into a crime caper. Readers watch as Kyle starts tracking down the fault of her score. It results in a very unique and fitting fashion. The closing ties up events perfectly. It never steers away from Catwoman’s crime life. Readers couldn’t ask for a better finish.

Earls and Canola hit the shock factor early. The full page nightmare of “The Wayne Family” sets a high bar. It leads into the fight for Kyle to regain control. Her interrogation methods shine. A unique “diamond centered” page breaks down the key history of the object. Readers watch as a certain Gotham fixture steps up for the diamond. Its’ result is a crowd pleaser of panels. The art gives readers something to smile about as the closing page hits. There’s a lot to enjoy here.

“A Matter of Life and Undeath” grade: 8.8

This tale takes place in the 30th century. Seasoned DCU fans know this is the Legion of Superheroes Era. MEL is a very tricky character to work with. When the power is to “eat Matter”, it allows some options. Kostanski and Hay play up the uniqueness. A change of heart leads into a mission to stop a zombie outbreak. The writing gives off a redemption arc for the hero. It is quirky and campy. Both are perfect for MEL. Readers watch the insanity unfold. Events close with a solid finish with no room for leftovers.

Faerber takes the art in to a more pop feel to begin. Once the mission comes up front, MEL is challenged to finish. The challenge is in all its’ gruesome glory. Once it attacks, a touch of fear fills the panels. MEL’s reactions knowing what he has done are priceless. Even with the zombies on the loose, MEL’s reactions front a good wall of confidence. Once events arrive at the showdown, a near full page image shows a hero’s redemption. The final panels reclaim its’ more friendly tone. Even in his faults, MEL conveys to the readers he is the only one who can stomach this challenge (literally).

The final round of Horror and heroes doesn’t disappoint in its’ close. Each story carried a different vision that will work on readers. The Catwoman tale is filled with sharp writing and solid art. The Atoms and Plastic Man showcase the project plan with an easy example. Waid dabbles into it enough without leaving the main driver behind. This is all about the JLU vs the dangerous Inferno. As the action escalates, so does the uncertainty.

The fires raging in the Amazon provides a big event. Seeing the team adapt on the fly provides great shake-ups. It also gives some surprises. The dialogue tries cyphering the riddles of the mysterious figure. Waid’s writing plants doubt into the heroes. The result shows one hero making a bold dash into the chaos. Seeing the overreaction proves a flaw in the league design. This drives the closing act. Having a lead, the team reaches out for a powerful ally. What they find hits the audience with a thunderous statement. A huge blow is dealt that might be too great to overcome.

Mora and Bonvillain tease the calm before the storm with the opening pages. Watching JLU members on the “off time” helps to feature the vast roster. Once the Amazon drama unfolds, the JLU does what they do best. Fantastic art raises the stakes of the magical fight. The art gives each panel a huge feel. It never escapes the reader even with the story detours.

The “Atom Project” section spotlights a larger side story. Seeing the after effects of “Absolute Power” is blunt with a mid panel image. The panels explain the secret mission. This is all due to Angela Alva. After capturing Hardware, Alva unloads her secrets in celebration. The Alva family history is tragic and unapologetic. Readers watch as Angela has been forged through pain and a yearning to belong. Even in victory, the writing also shows how she has lost. Angela’s crowning achievement backfires. Even in his absence, Darkseid still IS, Ram V. orchestrates quite the power vacuum with Apokolips in peril. The writing walks readers through the treacherous landscape. High-Father is shaken to his core. Desaad is in denial. On Earth, it is more grounded around the mysterious child. There are many vested parties interested. This includes a familiar face of Jack Kirby’s world joining the fray. Even with the new and old faces, one pair stands head and shoulders above all else for this tale.

Mr. Miracle and Big Barda have been the early breakout characters of this series. Seeing how Scott Free deals with being drawn into this issue provides a unique perspective. The letter he leaves for Barda is jam packed with emotion. Ram V’s writing here floods the pages with the self guilt and frustration of his task. The result leads into a fitting and strong conclusion. It offers a bright spot in comparison to the final act. With a haunting lead, the beginning of the end starts in an unlikely place.

Lonergan starts the chapter with a brief intro for Karok. The imagery reflects the dark overtones this character exudes. Led by a strong two-page splash, readers can connect as to the danger level this new player brings. From here, Cagle takes over for the remainder of the book. The visions of High-Father take on a whole new gravity. Each panel carries the dooming feel of loss. This carries into the Mr. Miracle portion of the chapter.

The struggles in dealing with his issue take center stage. Readers watch the letter come to life as Free tries to prepare. Orion is in contrast as he lets his aggression fly. It breaks the somber feel and leads to a bold near-full page. Backed by Napolitano’s lettering, Big Barda crashes Free’s self doubt. There are many reactions to how the couple plays this. It’s an easy win for readers before the brooding feel covers the remaining characters. The art makes each sub-plot sand out right to the last panels. There is no question events are just getting started on a very high level.

The race against time becomes center stage for Scott Free in the second installment of Kirby’s Fourth World revival. Ram V. pens a deeply seeded emotional chapter. Cagle, Segala and Napolitano piece together the fear of today with the promise of tomorrow. Many moving points are in motion that only spell win for the readers.
