It plays well of Lois’s inquisitive mind. The result ushers in some new (and old faces) into the field.

Readers watch as the Omega Men are introduced. Aaron twists their familiar concept. The run-in starts turning into a “cat and Mouse” confrontation. This only becomes more complicated with Peacemakers. With an inflated cast for this chapter, pacing steers into a direct close. It is vintage Superman that scores big. The end results tie back to a loose plot point.

Seeing Peacemaker Smith go through the Lazarus Corp. protocol makes quite the impression. It may seem telegraphed in parts but doesn’t miss its’ landing. This throws the closing pages in flux. Readers watch as the outcome becomes a larger catalyst than expected. Cracks in the foundation had been forming between the two characters. Superman’s reaction becomes more than realized. As the action escalates, so does the uncertainty.

The fires raging in the Amazon provides a big event. Seeing the team adapt on the fly provides great shake-ups. It also gives some surprises. The dialogue tries cyphering the riddles of the mysterious figure. Waid’s writing plants doubt into the heroes. The result shows one hero making a bold dash into the chaos. Seeing the overreaction proves a flaw in the league design. This drives the closing act. Having a lead, the team reaches out for a powerful ally. What they find hits the audience with a thunderous statement. A huge blow is dealt that might be too great to overcome.

Jumping in after another win by the World’s Finest, this story time jumps. The lead heroes are missing. Olsen and Batgirl are brought together by another great pair. Ace and Krypto (The Super Pets) lead the way to solving the mystery.

Waid crafts a very enjoyable story. The dynamic between Batgirl and Olsen clashes well enough. It gives readers an awkward sense as they start investigating. Once in the scene of the crime, events speed forward. The writing allows the best superhero themes to shine. Readers watch as the true heroes step in to save the day. Its’ resolution is classic. Even without its’ major players, this series continues to set the benchmark for superhero tales.

Galán steps in for art duties for this stand alone. The conflict with Galtar begins with a split full page. It features the standoff before diving into battle. Once the time jump happens, coloring makes the scenes more grim. It fits the world of Gotham City very well.

This is contrasted well with the brighter colors of Metropolis and Olsens’ world. Pacing pushes events very quickly. It builds toward a surprise reveal inside Arkham asylum. The full page image kicks off the closing conflict. It’s interrupted by an excellent full page welcome by some “super friends”. This leads to some great action panels before wrapping events up. The final pages finish the team-ups on solid ground with a classic final panel.

Who challenges the unexplained? Prof Haley. June Robbins. Red Ryan. Rocky Davis. Ace Morgan. One of DC comics legendary teams return in an all new series. With the “All In” initiative running wild, it’s a perfect time for the Challengers of the Unknown to return.

Now stationed on the JLU Watchtower, their latest challenge might be their greatest. Luckily, they’ve got some big backup for this run.

Adding the Challengers into the JLU mix makes for a solid beginning. Connecting them to the Darkseid attack is an easy win with readers. The team isn’t exactly household names. Cantwell does a great job interacting with the larger DCU before sending them onto their own path.

For this issue, the team is split off with the Trinity. This issue is heavily focused on Superman and Ace temaing up. The writing gives them a very classic feel as the heroes go in search of the time splits caused by Darkseid. Once in full swing, the story delves into the insecurities and emotions of Ace. It ultimately foreshadows more events in the works. The stage is also set for a conspiracy feel with a shocking ending. In dealing with the unknown, always expect the unexpected. That is an easy way to describe this issue.

Izaakse and Fajardo Jr. give readers a speedy recap of how the Challengers landed here. A near full page image introduces the team to new readers. While not fully in-depth, it hits its’ key points. There is an impressive two page splash for their debriefing. This leads into the pairing up for this issue.

Superman and Ace come across as old friends. The body language answers Ace’s insecurities. It also explains why he and the team are here. As events play out, the mission goes dark. Another full page image shows off the different lives of Ace. It takes readers into a more darker path before the closing act. Some “super friend” bonding with Supergirl and Lana Lang unlocks a deep rooted secret inside Lois. The result takes readers into unexpected directions.

At her core, Lois strives to do the right thing. Williamson walks the audience through the shocking change while allowing a new path. Lois deals with her initial change with wonder. This shifts quickly into growing confidence. Coming out of “Absolute Power”, there are challenges being a hero. Lois takes the ball and runs. It provides a few notable reveals. The script never stray from the theme. Lois is now a hero and that opens many new directions. The close ties up loose ends before a dramatic reveal sends forth a deadly challenge. How this new hero handles that pressure is anyone’s guess but readers will be locked in to watch.

Art duties are split three ways for this special. The credits page morphs into a two page splash. It’s an easy pick-up for readers as a new era begins. Events become more grounded with Lane back at the Planet. The art shows Lane’s cyphering of the new abilities. As the story progresses, pages bounce between current time and the past. Lois’ range of emotions peak. Readers no longer see the reporter. They witness a hero emerging. It is validated with the parting shot. An epic two page depiction perfectly concludes this portion of the series. Once at the last page, a new player appears ready to greet our new hero. After seeing how this came to be, the future is wide open for the new version of Lois Lane to thrive in.

After a brief attack, Superman addresses Lane in a blunt manner. This reflects the anger of the Peacemakers efforts to impose. From here, readers watch what Superman does best: inspire hope in hopelessness. Saving bystanders once an attack vehicle crashes is perfectly narrated by Lane. It mirrors the readers thoughts as this new version of Superman takes action. This builds towards a solid conclusion. Aaron builds a mix of classic teases with new takes. The final page solidifies the darkness lying ahead. One fight is over for now but easily not for long.

Sandoval and Arreola waste no time in setting a tense stage. The conflict between the Lazarus Corp and Superman fires off with a tremendous two page spread. Once the story returns, the focus turns to Lois Lane. Seeing her inexperience with dealing with a fully powered Doomsday amps up the drama. The rest of the DCU waits with baited breath as the fight rages on. Events shift gears to an unlikely character jumping into the fray. It leads to a shocking twist.

From here, the fallout starts spiraling to the close. Where events land provides an eerie calm as time is not on the Kents side. Judging by the final page, more elements are in play than even the Man of Steel can fathom.

Mora and Sánchez immediately hits readers with an incredible two page splash. The recap of the Time Traveler gives more gravity to the situation at hand. As this figure, Doomsday is drastically different. The mannerisms displayed show a more cunning version of the monster. Waid picks an unlikely lead for this opening chapter. Capitalizing on the expanded roster, featuring the naive Air Raid reflects the readers view. The story carries a massive weight as the League is reformed into a version never seen. With nearly every DC hero on roster, the possibilities are endless. Seeing Flash narrate the changes to new readers is a solid touch before jumping head first into the conflict.

Once the team rolls out, the writing takes the into a surprising direction. Instead of dealing with the dramatic onslaught at hand, the focus goes to a wounded soldier. Readers watch as the team powers together to save one life. As big as the threat is, simplifying it to a heroic act is what the League is all about. This leads into a great closing act. Waid leaves the audience with much to process including a very unforeseen cliffhanger ending. If this is any indication, the league is back in a BIG way!

To capture the epic level of events, few can outshine Dan Mora. Along with Bonvillain on colors, the League mission feels larger than life. With the opening Full & two page splashes, things start off on a great note. It transitions into tagging along with Air Raid. The humorous panels quickly fade as the team jumps into the issue at hand.

The art carries a tense feel as the JL is showcasing their skills. Panels feel bold as the heroes scramble to gain control of the situation. This rises up a few notches when attempting to save the wounded soldier. Seeing Star Sapphire and Flash race against the odds will have readers franticly waiting for the outcome. This rolls into the final pages. The closing pages pull off a fantastic swerve dousing the happy win for something more devious on the way.

Without question, DC’s premier superhero team returns to the forefront in a monster way. Waid’s writing escalates the drama while bringing out the best of the huge roster. Mora, Bonvillain and Maher craft amazing images reminding everyone why the League is the team others set the benchmark too. Brace for an incredible run in the making.

Eclipso’s endgame proves to be quite the challenge for both teams. Waid sets the stage by channeling the greatest weakness between both teams. The writing leans into the insecurities of the legacy heroes. It offers a very realistic theme on top of the conflict. The result challenges the younger JL. This works to further cement Eclipso’s control until the overconfidence sits in.

With Superman in peril, Batman steps up to take over the situation. Batman shows concern (in his own manner) which pushes the heroes where they need to go to win. He isn’t alone as another hero crashes the party. The conflict builds perfectly to a break. Its fallout felt quick but all points needed were covered. It completes a great story which is par for the course with this series.

Gutiérrez and Herms elevate Eclipso to new heights with the art. The menacing half page panel kicks off his final play against the Greenland army. It’s countered by a near full page image of Batman and Robin running into action. Once this is unveiled, the action sequences come in fast and furious. This plays well to establish the Eclipso driven feelings between the JSA and their legacy counterparts.

The JSA-Eclipso six panel page cements that point home. It gets complimented by a powerful hero entering the final round. The art team sets the stage behind a Green Lantern fight. From here, pacing escalates events into the powerful close. A full page explosion brings the house down as the heroes attempt to close out the fight. Wands’ lettering took that moment to a whole new level. The aftermath leads to a memorable final image. It is one that will stick with readers as a reminder of how great these heroes are. Excellent work.

Aaron digs into Superman being the symbol more than the man for this opening chapter. The backstory of Krypton paints a very distinct notion. Being considered lower class forges the house of El. The writing has set them up as the common citizen rather than the elite of the planet’s society. It reflects how Superman is seen in many eyes. They both represent Truth, Justice and a better tomorrow.

Once events shift back to Earth, the story beigns to move swiftly. Aaron sets up Kal-El as a hero questioning his actions. The uncertainty of his motives adds to an already complex character. Once danger strikes the small Brazilian town he is in, the true hero readers know comes out. The writing debuts Superman in a grand way. The only downside is it is short lived, but with good reason. Other characters crash the party flipping everything on its’ axis. It leads to a teasing close as a new era has launched without question.

Sandoval and Arreola depicts Krypton as a soul crushing environment pending the status. The Els are shown to be making their best efforts to survive the looming odds. A two page spread clearly states the divide in classes. It also droves home the meaning of the “S” symbol. Another two page splash shows an all too familiar fate for Krypton as the unraveling of secrets begins.

Once on Earth, Kal-El’s journey is hidden behind panels showcasing the struggles at hand. The wait isn’t too long as a full page panel welcomes in the Man of Tomorrow into the good fight. Action images capture the classic feel of Superman stories. This leads into a unique full page with Carey’s lettering setting up a catching panel. The aftermath is filled with shocking surprises while ushering readers to the close. Ince the final page hits, the art displays a haunting look as time is fleeting for happiness. It’s an excellent showcase for a debut tale.

The latest entree into the Absolute Universe makes its’ own path while maintaining the Superman mystique. Aaron presents an emerging hero’s journey with strong writing. Talk about a mic drop moment at the end! First, let’s dive into the new stat quo of the Kents. Seeing Lois powered adds a cool dynamic into protecting Metropolis. This starts with a fun classic Superman suit change with a twist. What follows next is prime superhero themes that forever remain timeless.

Using the Atomic Skull as the lead-in villain shows off Lois’s skills. Williamson writes her as a determined hero ready to seize the day. The back and forth between the Kents eases readers into the huge return. Knowing the big bad here, it is a true challenge that Lois showcases a quick range of emotions. Williamson throws a big curve in with the Time Trapper during this point. His appearance leads to the mind-blowing final page. There is no doubt fans will have MUCH to say about this shocking reveal.

DAN MORA. Does anything need to be said after that? The artwork is incredible as always. A fantastic two page splash shows off a horrific future where Superman appears to run out of time. This speeds back to the present where Mora and Sanchez capture the Superman movie feel with vintage Daily Planet panels. This concludes with a fun sequence of costume change rolling into another fantastic two page image.

Action flows at a high speed and never lets the readers go. When you think “Superman”, this issue delivers on it. Another striking two page image welcomes in the true bad to the story. Lois’ reactions are subtle but spike up the drama. At this stage, the story changes lanes into the Trapper close. The chapter finishes its’ time with an unforgettable final full page. There’s no way anyone sees that and doesn’t immediately have a reaction!

The new era in Metropolis kicks off in a monster way. Williamson brings back a deadly foe in a whole new light. With the art of Mora and Sanchez guiding the way, the chapter takes readers on quite the journey. Brace for the final page. It’s a show stopper!

Waid escalades the conflict with many twists and turns. Eclipso’s plans controlling Batman and Superman lead into a growing threat. The writing allows the heroes to dig into their dark sides while an unlikely hero steps in to save them. Robin becomes the teacher in keeping the heroes at bay long enough to get help. That comes in the form of one of DC’s greatest superhero teams.

The injection of the JSA throws a great dynamic into play. Readers watch as the team steps up to take down the finest. Waid dishes up a shocking way to try and free Batman from Eclipso’s clutches. It is a moment that will have fans’ attention. This leads into the closing portion of the chapter. Just when readers think they have some answers, Waid flips the situation to provide a strong cliffhanger until next time. There is a reason this series gets all the deserved praise it gets. It always showcases fantastic storytelling.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain make an immediate impact with the opening pages. Eclipso’s return to Earth is greeted with a bold full page image of the possessed heroes. The following panel of the maniacal laughter strikes a chord with the audience. Eclipso looks every bit as an unhinged threat to take on all challengers.

On the other hand, the art depicts Robin as a frantic, concerned hero. This comes from witnessing the big two under Eclipso’s control. The sequence with Commissioner Gordon come across larger than life due to some JSA influence. Seeing the subtle change in the Bat-signal works as a defining moment of events changing.

Along with these pages, Robin’s big moment pops off the page due to Wands’ lettering. The panel makes a big statement and switches the course of the story. It leads into a ever-changing final act. Once here, a full page portrait of heroes says one thing. The following panels flip everything around as the final shot reminds everyone this fight is far from over.

Eclipso’s reign of chaos continues as more heroes enter the fray. Waid’s writing keeps readers on edge with suspense. It’s equally matched with the phenomenal work of Gutiérrez (along with Bonvillain and Wands). The imagery shuffles up the exciting battles with the overall sense of trickery. Judging by the last page, expect more shock ad awe before this tale concludes.
