DETECTIVE COMICS #1103 (DC COMICS)

A new player has his sights set on Gotham City. The Lion has sent over a deadly virus via ship. Batman stopped it form hitting the shores but not without a cost. He was infected in the process.

Now time is running out on finding a cure. Luckily, he may have a super helping hand to assist in his efforts.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1103 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS) brings a few friends to town to help tame a savage beast.

Let’s take a closer look at where things head now.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1103 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor pits Batman with an equal when it comes to searching for truth. Lois Lane’s addition into the story provides a fresh insight into detective work. Their banter is very strong as they go to work. Methods are different & readers reap the rewards of the clashing.

It provides some memorable pieces while solving a puzzle. The Lion’s game has had many layers to it. This isn’t an average villain. Playing chess against Batman is risky. Involving a classic rogue is another gamble. Taylor is taking Batman into uncomfortable territory with this challenge. It is not just a physical race against the clock. The challenge is recognizing who controls the game. This strikes a huge nerve if it doesn’t belong to the Bat. What a win for readers.

Janin presents Superman in all his heroic glory to kick events off. The interactions with a weakened Batman echo their long standing friendship. Scenes are stolen once Lois Lane enters the game. Her confidence shines under Janin’s art. Even when Batman tries taking over events, Lane’s demeanor refuses to yield panels.

Readers get a splash of action pages as their searching progresses. Watching Batman take down Intergang is vintage Bats. Panels pick up the pace leading to a thrilling full page roof jump. Even as events calm down, the mood is still carrying a tense tone. This is exemplified when The Lion captures his latest target. The close is very simple but drives home the sense of paranoia creeping in. Batman is playing catch-up and this doesn’t sit well.

FINAL GRADE: 9

With an assist from Lois Lane, Batman’s hunt for the Loin dives further into dark times. Taylor pens an exciting clash of methods amongst the drama. Janin presents the unlikely pairing working together with much surprise in execution. Detective Comics continues to stand out as a title readers don’t want to miss.

BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #1 (DC COMICS)

What is “Arcadia”? It is something that brings together three of DC’s most infamous vigilantes. Bruce Wayne. Oliver Queen. Vic Sage. Each have their own unique way to fight crime. Some more “quirky” than others. All don’t really play well with others.

How long can these three work together? Better yet, do they even want to?

BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #1 by Gabriel Hardman, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Simon Bowland welcomes the three into a gritty Black Label tale for the ages.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what unfolds here.

BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA #1 by Gabriel Hardman, Romulo Fajardo Jr. & Simon Bowland (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Combining all 3 of these vigilantes can be difficult, especially dealing with Sage. Hardman instantly adds in the gritty aura of the Question to kick things off. Sage’s ever-growing paranoia blends in with his current investigation. It leads the way to have the other two leads slowly added into the mix. This works better for Queen, who’s brash persona instantly causes drama. Once Sage contacts Queen, the story really picks up steam.

Readers watch as all key players get caught up in the mystery of Arcadia. There’s a fair share of brooding mystery as an attack in Belize w/ Batman harbors more than it lets on. Sage’s path takes a more darker twist as he and Queen start their mission. Hardman takes full advantage of the Black Label banner to present this story. Each character gets enough page time to build their cases. Once at the final act, themes get tighter as all roads appear to come into one. It’s a refreshing spin on the character’s and their visions of truth.

Hardman is pulling double duty for this saga with art duties. The Question’s bleek outlook comes into light with grizzled coloring. Fajardo Jr. gives this story a very dated look to a throwback time. If it was anything else, the visuals just wouldn’t work here. From Queen’s night out to Batman dealing with some young upstarts, the imagery connects to how tough this take is going to be.

As the globe-trotting begins, the art brings out different looks of each lead. Wayne leans heavy into his billionaire persona. This switches into Dark Knight mode to thwart an attack. Each look tracks to compile Batman’s status as a wild-card. This shines in the aftermath of stopping the uprising strike.

Sage’s situation is more complex. Readers see the seedy world he steps in for answers. This results in a dire outcome. Queen walks in-between both worlds for his portion. Once at the end, he embraces his alter ego in search of the truth. The final page shows Queen might have some issues in achieving goal. Suffice to say, a first impression was made here.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Merging a gritty view of a starling conspiracy with three classic heroes equals a promising new tale. Hardman hits the key aspects of his leads while presenting the visuals in spectacular fashion. Expectations are high for this saga via a strong first impression.

THE FLASH #27 (DC COMICS)

Speedsters and Time Travel never mix. Bart Allen is learning the hard way. After making a failed attempt to stop Darkseid, Allen finds himself in a dangerous new world. Friendly faces are very cold now. There’s a certain vibe than fills the landscape here.

Allen has wound up in the Absolute Universe with a Legion waiting for him!

THE FLASH #27 by Mark Waid, Christopher Cantwell, Vasco Georgiev, Matt Herms & Buddy Beaudoin continues its’ tie-in story with “DC K.O.”.

Let’s take a deeper dive into where events lead now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Whenever Bart Allen is involved, usually problems follow. In this situation, his rash decision now brings innocents into the line of fire. The writing shows his view of The Legon of Darkseid. This results in a mad dash to escape. Who he finds waiting for him proves to be more impactful than Allen could ever realize.

As for Wally West, readers watch him try to maintain some sense of direction. His interactions with Max Mercury become a lost cause. This moves into a run-in with another Dark Legion speedster. Waid and Cantwell present this conversation with a blunt perspective. It’s Darkseid’s will or nothing. Short and to the point.

West and Allen respond as one would think. Their reactions lead into a dangerous situation. Readers watch as quick thinking helps to advert disaster but cause more problems. The banter re-affirms Allen’s mistake heading into close. A final statement cements Darkseid wants Everything, no matter who or what it costs.

Georgiev & Herms balances out Bart’s imagination with a cold dose of reality. The interpretation of Darkseid’s legion is a fun break through the heavy subject. A full page image brings everything back to the present problem to launch into the story. Panels juggle the fast-paced action as Wally West gets involved.

His presence adds to an already combustible situation. Bart’s escape on a train proves more complicated than just running. The art locks in on the Legion’s attack. It results into a solid two page splash. This ushers in a frank conversation between the heroes. There is much emotion filled in these panels. Once at the close, a simple vision tips off a dark future forthcoming.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Bart Allen’s ill-timed plans run into more roadblocks with the Legion of Darkseid. Waid & Cantwell lean into Allen’s family ties with the writing. Georgiev & Herms give readers energetic art to speed through the conflict. This is definitively not a sprint on to where things go from here. Brace for the marathon.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #13 (DC COMICS)

With the most powerful heroes of the DCU tied up with “K.O.”, someone needs to keep the peace. Mr. Terrific is the one leading the charge. He assembles a team from heroes stranded from “We Are Yesterday.” They’re going to need to get their focus together fast.

When ordinary villains are getting their powers amplified to dangerous levels, only one person is prime suspect. The JLU is heading into Hell to fight Neron!

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #13 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain & Ariana Maher continues its tie-in with the “DC K.O.” event.

Let’s take a closer look where events go now.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #13 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain & Ariana Maher (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid takes on another task with this eclectic team. Chasing after Neron on Hell is a task upon itself. Making this team expendable with loss is another all together. The writing spotlights Terry McGuiness and Alan Scott as its’ prime factors. Watching both react to what is unfolding dances with the true dangerous threat at hand. This takes a heavier toll on the former as this clearly is above his reach.

As events progress, choice are made. This reflects the conflict on Earth. Once Neron’s plan is exposed, the “Ten’s” job becomes that much more difficult. Waid maneuvers key losses into letting Terrific take control. This results in another tragic loss in a game they cannot win. A very classic superhero tale if ever presented (which is never a bad thing).

Mora and Bonvillain open with some magnificent full page images. This leads readers into a very dark view of Hell. Terrific’s squad steps up to fight. The art reflects their attempts to win. It also showcases how this might be over some of their heads. This is especially the case with Terry McGuiness.

The other surrounding conflicts hit their key points supporting Neron’s lead. Readers get great team action while the dark clouds loom overhead. Once scenes go back to Hell, hope does try cracking through the darkness. Alan Scott’s drive cannot be ignored.

Watching him stand up against the beautifully grotesque art only adds to the closing. Terrific’s confidence is another factor in panels. Only when a loss is taken does it ever break. This helps to lead into the parting page. A haunting final image indicates how things are only going to get worse from here. Another home run with the art in this series.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5

The “Terrific Ten” encounter dangers that leave scars and losses in its’ wake. Waid masterfully weaves in the extended cast to face the drama. Mora and Bonvillain never falter on presenting the darkest elements of the Hellish landscape. Where things lead from here will have readers excited for what’s next.

SUPERMAN #32 (DC COMICS)

When the fate of the world is at stake, a hero emerges. In this case, “hero” is a term used very loosely.

LEX LUTHOR IS BACK!

After recent events, Luthor dropped off the radar to re-assess. His time away was one of peace. It was never going to last with evil looming in the wings. With “DC K.O” needing someone in possession of absolute power, how could Luthor say no?

SUPERMAN #32 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Alejandro Sánchez & Ariana Maher presents the return of Lex Luthor!

Let’s take a closer look and see how this plays out!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson takes readers for quite the ride with Luthor for this chapter. The opening shows Lex at his crowning moment. Knowing what he believes is his destiny, his dialogue comes off as smug and confident as ever. Watching Grodd tip him off to Doomsday’s plans is just enough to launch his own view of divide and conquer.

Readers watch as many familiar tropes are used to set the plan in motion. Including in some fan-favorites is no mistake. Williamson uses their rage and questionable personas to make a powder keg waiting to implode. This is especially true with the Joker. It is easy to tell the pure enjoyment Williamson is having creating these moments. It serves as a sound transition point to another lingering plot point.

Superboy-Prime and Lois Lane run through a gauntlet of extremes. Due to the events of time and space, certain plot points are allowed to resurface. This proves successful as more party crashers arrive. The writing mirrors Prime’s twisted view of the world while fighting back. It results in a questionable move. How that will play out due to K.O.’s current events is anyone’s guess. For now, its a perfect closing point until next chapter.

Barrows & Ferreira hit the Lois Lane drama with a two page splash. While early, it helps to drive home the close when time. In between, its all about Lex Luthor. The art locks in on Lex’s pure hatred pouring through when confronting Superman. The flashbacks with the Legion Of Doom make their points with a full Joker image stealing the page. Its a solid build before heading into K.O.

As events move back to Prime and Lane, the full shot of the Legion attacking sets the pace. Lois’ reaction is perfect for this encounter. Her unbreakable will steps up. A shocking two-page splash ushers in a surprise factor. Readers watch as not everything is as what it seems. This goes into the close with a surprise final page. Secrets are revealed as the “K.O".” moment takes hold. Fans will have a great deal to enjoy here.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The return of Lex Luthor takes center stage in an exciting K.O. tie-in. Williamson’s writing brings back the legendary villain superbly. Barrows, Ferreira & the art team shine as the egotistical figure returns with a vengeance. Is Luthor humanity’s last hope? Only one way to find out.

GREEN LANTERN #29 (DC COMICS)

After the Starbreaker Supremacy, Hal Jordan needs a minute to reset. What better way than to catch up with an old friend? Jordan makes his way to Star City to see Oliver Queen.

Green Lantern and Green Arrow. Knowing their history, trouble always seems to find them.

GREEN LANTERN #29 by Jeremy Adams, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Romulo Fajardo Jr.& Dave Sharpe adds another chapter to their historic legacy.

Let’s take a closer look at what they get into now.

GREEN LANTERN #29 by Jeremy Adams, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Romulo Fajardo Jr.& Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

There is something very timeless when Hal Jordan and Oliver Queen cross paths. Someone is buying property up in Star City. This kind of action brings Queen into the fray. With an assist form Jordan, they pair start digging into what’s going on. It serves as a much needed distraction for Jordan. Ever since finding his name in the Book of Oa, he hasn’t been the same. Having some time to reconnect with Queen proves immeasurable.

Their banter is priceless. Adams knows how to portray the old friends. It leads into an easy team-up into what’s unfolding. Through the set-up, there is a subtle “K.O.” tie-in. It unveils itself more grounded than one may think. The writing presents its case but not before great action commences. There is plenty of super-hero hijinks taking place. It all boils to a satisfying finish. Readers never escape their bond and banter. The issue is a much needed change of pace into the more darker road lying ahead. This will certainly be a crowd pleaser.

Di Giandomenico & Fajardo Jr. give readers plenty of big moments and fun interactions. Jordan’s initial rescue of Queen is met with a solid panel image. It conveys what to expect in this chapter. Their discussion of Hal’s issues peels back the heroic side to reveal a talk between friends. It serves to pivot the story into a more traditional team-up theme.

Arrows, robots and action, oh my! The art captures the fight for answers with huge action images. There is plenty of robot combat to lead into the truth of the matter. As the true villain is revealed, the story slows up to let reasoning sink in. It pauses action long enough to let readers buckle in on the wild close.

A full page roboting strike takes center stage. This thrusts events into the final battle. The art team orchestrates a very chaotic fight into an extremely enjoyable sequence. Readers watch as the heroes go over-the-top in combating a gigantic robot. It is everything you would want in this match-up. Sharpe’s lettering puts a bow on the gift they are giving fans. The fallout is as classic as you get with this paring. A full image sets Jordan on a more serious destination & more unwelcomed problems.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Green Arrow & Green Lantern do what they do best in an extremely fun adventure. Adams’ writing brings out the best in both. Di Giandomenico & Fajardo Jr. construct an impressive match-up filled with sensational visuals. It’s never a misfire for fans when these two get together.

IMMORTAL LEGEND BATMAN #4 (DC COMICS)

Who stands between the innocents and the shadows? In a different world, humanity crossed a line with dark matter. This unleashed an evil onto the Elseworlds universe. One man has returned into the light to fend these beings off. Even if the price might be his life.

IMMORTAL LEGEND BATMAN #4 by Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, Dan Mora, Erica D’Urso, Tamra Bonvillain, Igor Monti & Becca Carey (DC COMICS) continues its tokusatsu storytelling saga with another thrilling chapter.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what is unfolding now.

IMMORTAL LEGEND BATMAN #4 by Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, Dan Mora, Erica D’Urso, Tamra Bonvillain, Igor Monti & Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In his mission, Immortal Legend Batman is coming to terms with his mortality. With each fight, Wayne can sense that slipping further out of grasp. The latest incarnation of a rogue taps into Wayne’s inner turmoil. It results in a question of will over hard truths. Batman has always been complex. Dealing with past trauma serves to take huge measures to win.

Readers watch as a re-imagination of a classic rogue opens up a wide playbook. The question of self-isolation proves to be the tipping hand in victory. A shocking move takes care of the latest shadow but not before exposing another truth. Higgins and Groom weave this point in before setting up the next round. The audience gets a hefty dose of details while moving events back for a homecoming of sorts. Risks taken never misfire as this legend of Batman continues to soar to new heights.

D’Urso and Monti take ILB into a very colorful new planet for this go-arund. After a full page dramatic entrance, the art swings into full gear. Monti’s coloring pops with each page in this sequence. The geo-challenges prove a true contender for Batman until the shadow reveals their identity.

The panel breakdown of Batman’s poisoning works to convey the attack’s impact. Flashbacks become trippy in presentation to mirror the mind’s painful recall. It leads into a full blown brawl with fantastic backgrounds. Even as the shadow portrays the over-confidence, it steps back to Batman’s last strike. The fallout is vivid and eye-catching. This is a staple of D’Urso’s art, bringing events to a cold finish.

Mora and Bonvillain add in their closing pages to compliment the previous team. There are plenty of heroic shots of the ILB family coming to terms of what’s to come. Reader have the stage set for a full circle moment that is long-overdue to occur. Brace for impact.

FINAL GRADE: 9

The Immortal Legend is seeing green (and red) with the latest shadow tapping into the past. Higgins and Groom craft a tale of internal drama while fighting present danger. The art teams led by D’Urso and Monti continue to win fans over with excellent imagery. This legend of the Bat never stops impressing with each chapter.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #14 (DC COMICS)

The road to Hell has led to this moment. When Waylon Jones went missing, Batman started an investigation. What he discovered was pure terror. Ark-M had changed his friend into a crocodile-like creature. That wasn’t the only horror he discovered. A walking abomination known as BANE decimated him their first round. This lead to torture and experimentation. Bruce Wayne was forever changed.

Upon his escape, Wayne returned home to find his friends disfigured and a message behind it. There was no running away from this force. Bane wants him for a special reason. Wayne will not go gently into that quiet night. Someone is not walking away from this fight.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #14 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles delivers one of the most brutal fights in comic history.

Put up a ringside seat and let’s ring the bell. It’s fight time!

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #14 by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, & Clayton Cowles (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Knowing the history of these two in the prime DCU, expectations were high. Snyder went All In on the violence for this brawl. The writing presents it as a tactical battle of wills. It mirrors Jones’ prize fight to the letter. Both underdogs should have no chance to win. In this case, Wayne goes to extremes for victory. There is no expense to physical or environmental cost he’s willing to pay.

This sense of sheer violence may be off putting to some. It’s needed to tell the story here. With each blow, readers can feel the pain inflicted. Bane’s confidence proves to be a weakness in this fight. The writing shows how he will not cave. This leads to a dramatic final strike. It turns everything on its axis as limits are pushed well beyond reason. The result is a brutal climax that crowns Gotham’s champ.

Snyder pens an impactful monologue to cruise into the closing. The final page is a haunting one as another evil emerges. There is no shortage of how this series has only scratched the surface of how dark the world of Batman can truly be. Phenomenal work.

Dragotta and Martin carry each page with a sense of painful pomp and circumstance. The showdown is presented with a heavy weight. It is all too fitting for where this sotry goes. Once the first swing is taken, the gas pedal is hit. There is nothing held back. This is as extreme as a fight you will ever see in a fictional story.

It is a true David vs. Goliath as Batman fights. Bane is presented as larger than life. Each action taken on him is raw brutality. From dangling eyeballs to severing nerves, nothing is off limits. The full image of Croc entering the fight causes a momentum shift. There’s plenty of bloodshed going around in these pages. It comes to a head when Batman makes a risky final move. The result is a grotesque full page. This puts a stamp on the finish before more calm pages to end with. The last page will have readers talking as true evil enters the playing field. Get ready.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The last man standing bout between Bane and Batman lives up to the marquee. Snyder pens a tale pouring with intensity and emotion. Dragotta and Martin leave nothing for the judges as they craft the definition of brutality in their panels. It’s an intense read but well worth the time. Bring a mouth guard. You’re gonna need it for how hard this hits.

DC K.O. #2 (DC COMICS)

Ready for round two? The fate of the DCU is at stake with a dangerous tournament. Darkseid has returned more powerful than ever. The lord of the Absolute Universe wants more. This has forced the Justice League’s hand. Representatives have been selected to fight.

The fight has already had some unpredictability play out. Batman was eliminated. Lex Luthor has returned with a vengeance. Even the Quantum Quorum have no idea what’s coming. Darkseid is hiding inside of Booster Gold! That was all in issue #1?!

DC K.O. #2 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Xermánico, Javier Fernández, Alejandro Sánchez & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou rings the bell for another wild round.

Let’s take a closer look at where the next fall leads!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue centers around Superman’s drive to win. The writing goes back to the previous board game amongst friends. Their banter eludes to life outside of heroes. Williamson tosses in a comment that spins into something more. With the notion Superman would be president in play, this only amplifies with the chapter. It also allows for another figure to step up with their own vision.

Seeing Lex Luthor in his evil glory is a sight. Through the combat to acquire the DCU’s more powerful weapons, Luthor shows the lengths he’s willing to go. There is more fun chaotic brawling in this chapter. Joker is stealing scenes in this tourney. His antics do fall back behind Luthor. Watching a daring move made sends shockwaves to the audience. This is topped by Superman’s response. Snyder times it perfectly to hit. This is the moment of the book. Even as the ending throws another curve, it doesn’t hit as hard as what the Man Of Steal has done. Another excellent read.

Fernández and Sánchez give readers many fond action points throughout this chapter. The two page splash of weapons covers the dream list of DC lore. This spirals into the featured match-ups of the 32 combatants. Some pairings leave a stronger reaction than expected. Joker taking out Giganta is a prime example of this. Seeing his devilish grin as he plots sends chills before some dark humor.

Luthor and Superman get a proper two page splash. It hits every mark that readers would want to see. Their fight gets upstaged by a striking full page image. Panels match their hatred for each other while the tourney pressure weighs in. The art team throws in a small break with a Venomed Lobo versus Starro. Readers are gifted a series of two page splashes. This will be a popular moment before things take a sharp turn.

Once here, Superman’s move takes center stage. The event gets a bold two page splash. It helps amplify the end of this round. With the field dwindled down, a simple grid page shows who’s left. The closing act gives another panel a monster, but inevitable feel. Another shake-up occurs to bring down the house. The art team is really bringing it for this series thus far.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

The second round of DCU combat goes full throttle on bringing the action. There’s a fair share on exciting match-ups presented via the writing. Fernández and Sánchez pull out all the stops with the art. Two rounds in and there’s no judge’s decision needed. This is a complete knockout for readers!

NIGHTWING #132 (DC COMICS)

How the student has truly become the teacher. Dick Grayson had taken a young kid with immense power under his wing. The learning curve has been difficult, esp. when the sidekick possesses Kryptonian strength. All seems normal until a Kryptonite bullet takes the boy out.

A haunting image is placed in Nightwing’ head. The Zanni is here. Time for diplomacy is over. Vengeance fills his heart now. What will he find as he looks to take down the evil threat once and for all?

NIGHTWING #132 by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini & Wes Abbott escalates business with its’ latest chapter.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what unfolds now.

NIGHTWING #132 by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini & Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Just when readers think they know the story, Watters throws a few curves. Olivia Pearce has crossed a line with her actions. This pushes Grayson into making a rash choice. Taking the fight to Pearce’s home turf fills pages with solid action. Her suit mimics Grayson’s every move. The one thing it cannot is his heart. In this case, that might be more costly than it seems.

Readers watch as Pearce’s unhinged origin starts to slowly unwind. The writing walks through the slow play to lure out the Boy Wonder. When plans go awry, it unlocks a true terror. Even as trained as Grayson is, the moment throws him completely off-guard. It also disguises the true play at hand. Watters takes Grayson completely out of his comfort zone. The chaotic manner sets the stage for a greater downfall commencing. There is an overwhelming sense of fear that encompasses Bludhaven’s hero to his core. A perfect exit point until next time.

Soy and Gandini open with a full shot of Nightwing-Prime fighting for life. The striking image is enough to push Nightwing over the edge. Readers are in for a treat with the full page image of Grayson running into combat. It sets the pace for the next action sequences. Moves fly fast as Pearce activates her suit. Through these panels, Grayson’s rage continues to build.

The face-off on top of the train catapults into Pearce’s reveal. Soy hides Pearce’s face behind flashback panels. This technique keeps hidden Pearce’s long play. It builds up to an absolutely terrifying full page shot. The attention to detail is incredible for this scene. Readers watch as Nightwing becomes lost in the truth that he never sees the next move. This results in a shocking public display. The only thing unchanged is Grayson’s exploding rage. It dissolves into a more somber parting panel. There’s no doubt of how fast Grayson is sinking further into despair.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

What starts as a confrontation turns into a horrific scene Dick Grayson can’t imagine. Watters hides the brutal truth in his writing. Soy and Gandini deliver on setting the stage for a living nightmare in Bludhaven. Don’t sleep on what’s unfolding here.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #7 (DC COMICS)

Kryptonians beware! After a meteor crashed to Earth, it left an abundance of Krytponite in its wake. The deadly element is easy for the wrong people to obtain. This has made a huge problem for DC’s Super Family. John Henry Irons and Steelworks is working on the problem. He has a very familiar test subject to help him in this quest.

Jon Kent has returned to Smallville with a broken heart. His boyfriend broke up with him in “Secret Six”. Kent returns home to find a new path but something lies in the shadows to halt this journey.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #7 by Dan Slott, Jeremy Adams, Lucas Meyer, Marcelo Maiolo & Dave Sharpe throws the spotlight on Jon Kent: Daily Planet reporter!

Let’s take a closer look at how this all plays out.

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #7 by Dan Slott, Jeremy Adams, Lucas Meyer, Marcelo Maiolo & Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Slott plots Jon Kent in a new landscape with excellent results. Working with Steelworks appeases his superhero side. There is one aspect that still weighs heavy on the Man of Steel. Breaking up with Jay Nakamura is still an open wound. Adams’ dialogue doesn’t let that escape reader attention. His famous parents are also aware of the “Secret Six” fallout.

Lois Lane’s conversation covers much ground. Adams nails the family caring while pushing Jon into a new direction. This leads into some classic Superman themes. The “Translated from Rooster” was a fun moment. As Jon goes through his reporting phase, it unlocks more of his character. This leads into a solid confrontation and conclusion. Sometimes powers don’t finish conflicts. All it needs is a cooler head to prevail. Readers clearly see that’s why Jon Kent is the hero he is and legend in the future. Very enjoyable read.

Meyer and Maiolo open up the art with a full page of Jon in action. The subtle Jay nods easily effect the Man of Steel. It leads into frustration on Jon’s face before finishing his tests. A two page splash welcomes Jon back to Smallville in style. This all changes once his mother checks in virtually.

Their banter shines as the subject of Jon’s heartbreak. Lois’s optimistic responses sees Jon let his guard down. This rolls into a new investigation. The full page image of Jon using his powers stands out while his grandparents object. Readers watch as this inquisitive move moves into a discovery. The reveal is grand as Jon finds out what has been the disturbance. Meyer sneaks in some action sequences before a full page ends the conflict. This moves into a more light-hearted finish. Readers can sense this right to the last panel. A great one-liner is complimented by a simple panel with huge heart. No better way to visually end this.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Jon Kent’s return to Smallville leads to mystery and self-reflection in a fantastic issue. The writing ties in the vintage Superman themes with new takes. Meyer, Maiolo and Sharpe construct superb imagery to guide readers through Jon’s investigation. Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow indeed.

TITANS #29 (DC COMICS)

The Titans are scattered! Due to the events of DC K.O., the team is forced to spread their coverage. Earth has been evacuated. Nightwing and Raven have their hands full at a refugee host site. Beast Boy is on another assignment. Same with Wonder Girl and Arsenal.

They can’t give assistance to Starfire. She’s isolated with an Apokolipic army en route! Can she survive what’s coming next?

TITANS #29 by John Layman, Pete Woods & Wes Abbott continues its’ tie-in to DC’s major event!

Let’s take a closer look at where things are now.

TITANS #29 by John Layman, Pete Woods & Wes Abbott (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Layman puts a solid majority of time into Nightwing & Raven’s current troubles. Gemworld seems to be too good to be true. Evacuating most of Earth to the new landscape feels too easy. As the story moves forward, more cracks start forming. This falls onto Raven’s shoulders. Her choice of handling Terra proves costly as another factor comes into play.

Once the spotlight gets to Starfire, the pace picks up. Readers watch as she does receive back-up in an unlikely form. This leaves room to grow her plot point. The biggest draw back with this moment is it’s way too short to have a true payoff. Hopefully this is fixed for next chapter. The attention goes back to Nightwing’s fight. There are tough calls made as Gemworld is under attack. It leads the chapter into the final page. While brief, this point maximizes its time as to where readers can expect to go from here.

Woods juggles many characters in the opening frame. Having the team discuss how to deal with villains foreshadows more to come. Donna Troy’s expressions steal panels before launching into Gemworld. The full page image teases a potential win for the heroes. Once Raven discusses moves with Amethyst, this illusion starts fading fast.

Starfire comes into focus via full page image. Her stand-off with the enemy front builds up tension. It’s brief as events go back to Gemworld. The true enemy stands revealed via full page image. In this phase, there is much hopping around. Back to Starfire, her reinforcements take over with a full shot. The only complaint is the briefness of this section. As Gemworld gets more chaotic, Raven’s choie is granted a full page to let the moment sink in. It leads readers into the close where another figure takes lead. The parting panel hits the mark as a new phase is ushered in.

FINAL GRADE: 8

Plot pacing takes away from an very solid crossover tie-in. The writing leans too heavily in one story while leaving more plots too brief. Woods constructs excellent panels through the ever-winding chapter. While a solid read, too much focus on Nightwing takes away from the overall experience.

DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 (DC COMICS/MARVEL COMICS)

Earlier this year, the “big two” of comics reunited for an unlikely team-up. “Deadpool/Batman” launched a new wave of crossover stories. This new united front sent fans into a wild frenzy. It teased the idea for more characters and impossible stories. The creative aspect has been one of many wins for Marvel and DC. They recently has a crossover involving Thor/Shazam & The Flash/Fantastic Four on their digital library platforms. This was followed with a push to sign up for the services, getting more people into comics.

Before 2025 wraps up, the publishers are reuniting for another special edition. It’s time for round two between the Dark Knight & the Merc with a Mouth!

DC/MARVEL: BATMAN/DEADPOOL #1 by Grant Morrison, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez, Todd Klein, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic, Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott, Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe, G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands deliver on another round of mash-up tales.

Let’s break down what is unfolding this go around!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Much like the first crossover, the book is jam-packed with an all-star creative lineup. This results in some show-stealing pairings. None fully steal the spotlight away from the lead pair. A great deal of this revolves around the vivid imagination of Grant Morrison.

Being no stranger to Batman, Morrison throws him into an unstable scenario. This is largely due to his dance partner. While investigating a murder under Amanda Waller, Batman stumbles into Deadpool’s path. The result takes clever shots at Wade’s “origin”. Morrison’s writing keeps its’ zip as the story moves forward. Readers watch as the zany side of their pairing sets a course for a deadly villain's grasp. Knowing Morrison’s history with said character, the mood sets into a comfortable yet dangerous tone.

This allows some breathing room as the story starts taking a different shape. There are many creative reaches attempted. Most all hit their marks. Readers that know some history will pop for a huge reveal in these moments. It spirals the story into a unique spot. The result is a fast finish to tie up loose ends. Ordinarily, this might misfire. Knowing what Morrison does best, the finish is vintage. It sends readers home on a high note until the next go around. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Mora and Sánchez start off events with a traditional look at Gotham City. the brooding tones are very evident in these pages. It ushers in the investigative portion of Batman’s case. This is the arguably last “normal” moment of the story. From here, everything moves to mirror Deadpool’s aura in the chapter.

The two page spread pays a small homage to a classic DC tale. It doesn’t take long before the 4th wall is shattered completely. Once Batman appears, the panels spotlight the clash in personalities. There is plenty of wacky Deadpool moments here. After the pace slows up, the main antagonist reveals themselves.

Readers are gifted an excellent two page spread for this intro. It opens the door for the story to explore the more head-scratching times of the Dark Knight & Marvel. A full page shot welcomes in this volatile character. Panels get extremely brutal in this fight. It helps to bring everything into the final act.

Once here, a new player enters the game. The shadowy figure will raise some eyebrows and smiles. Their persona shines on the pages. They throw the story off-axis. Readers watch another Bat-version crash the party via full page. Their appearance circles the end of the tale. Events close up with a solid near full page send-off. The bar was set high for art and hit the mark for this special issue.

The sub-stories are a LOADED line-up of creators:

Hellblazer & Dr. Strange (James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, Frank Cvetkovic) brings out the dark magic side both dabble in.

Nightwing & Wolverine (Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, Wes Abbott) re-unites the Eisner-winning team behind Dick Grayson’s best adventures for another classic.

Harley Quinn & the Hulk (Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner, Tamra Bonvillain, Dave Sharpe) is as over the top as readers would hope.

Closing up shop is Static & Ms. Marvel ( G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson, Francesco Segala & Steve Wands). The story pairs up to fan-favorites leaving the readers wanting to see more of their adventures.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

The second go-around between Wayne and Wilson heads into weird territory for a huge win. Morrison runs wild with the writing to fans’ delight. Mora and Sánchez craft amazing images to navigate the complex tale. Add in the other superb side-sagas and this is one that’s sure to please all. Don’t miss out!

C.O.R.T.(Children Of The Round Table) #3 by Tom Taylor, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Rain Beredo & Wes Abbott (DC Comics)

The kids are presented with their first major conflict in Mordred’s forces. Readers watch as they have to adapt on the fly to survive. This results in some quick action before the odds become stacked against them. Readers watch as their weapons’ souls become teachers in resisting the threat. It isn’t until a familiar face crashes the party that the objective becomes clearer.

Merlin’s appearence throws a new dynamic into play. The writing pulls off his charisma while averting capture. His presence proves to be the guiding voice needed to advance. This mentorship works wonders on Connor. The dialogue gives clarity on the destiny he is staring at now. There is a small presence of magic to take readers into the closing act. Once here, the story starts developing into a merger of two worlds. Whether the kids are ready or not is another question yet to be answered.

Di Nicuolo & Beredo ramp up the tense setting early in the chapter. As the kids are being confronted, their weapons take over. The action starts spilling into the panels. This leads into an unlikely full page image. The art carries a very kinetic feel as the fighting escalates. This leads into a full page debut of a powerful figure. Timing couldn’t be better.

Readers watch as Merlin takes over the pages with quiet moves. The kids’ reaction to his leadership varies from worry to shock. It results in a planned escape into a new surrounding. Once at their destination, the mood swings to a lighter approach. There is a sense of wonder as they discover where they truly are. The final page presents their new home via full page. It conveys much magic as their next chapters are about to be written.

FINAL GRADE: 8.4

The new knights are thrown into uncharted territory in this latest chapter. Taylor guides readers through the transforming scenario via strong writing. Di Nicuolo & Beredo construct impressive pages to assist in delivering the wonder of their course. Judging by the closing page, there’s much more to ponder on the horizon.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #12 (DC COMICS)

A legacy is not built overnight. As Bruce Wayne has evolved into the World’s Greatest Detective, he has been dealt tough calls. This was especially true in his early days. Some of the grimiest cases have crossed his path. Each more challenging than the last.

One series has flown under the radar in exposing these trials. The format has been self contained cases during the initial BATMAN days. All have shocked and awed readers. Before bowing out for this round, there’s one more case to close.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #12 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic presents the finale to “The Child Of Fire”.

Let’s take a deeper dive into this explosive ending.

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #12 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters brings the curtain down with a thrilling conclusion. Watching Nicky Harris maneuver his plans as all lead to his final vision. The writing shows him in all his glory declaring victory. Even as Jim Gordon crosses an ethical line, there’s little he can do to halt the madness. Readers watch as the dialogue between Harris and Dr. Serekia adds more gas to that inferno. Knowing how far gone he is, Harris’ vision is easily interrupted. His explanation of manipulating events moves that notion forward until it’s slammed shut.

The payoff fans have been waiting for finally kicks in. It is a perfect Batman moment. Even in a weakened state, his sheer will shines through. This moves into a more steady landing spot for the case at hand. The dialogue delivers on a colder tone. It results in building up the mystique of the Bat. Watters tie up all loose ends before leaving with a final message. One case has closed but another is set to become wide open.

Sherman and Farrell set the stage early with this issue. The opening pages reflect the intense attempt to stop Harris. Gordon’s doubt is written all over his face. This moves into Harris addressing Serekia. The two page splash reveals many details to the overall schemes. It helps establish the long term booking of his attacks. The use of Batman’s shadow is perfect in these panels. Structure also moves events into a showstopping moment.

Seeing Batman emerge through the raging inferno is going to be a fan-favorite image. The near full page launches into a quick physical standoff. Readers watch as the heat becomes too much of a factor. This allows for a near full page image to end this fight & focus on the greater threat. Using Gordon’s eyes as a blurred panel sells the crash he was involved in. The creativity displayed here is second to none. Having the bat symbol used to block off panels hits a bullseye! It allows the art to finish each sub-plot before the final panel. Once here, a simple freefall carries a new weight into a darker knight’s destiny.

FINAL GRADE: 9.7

The case is bittersweetly closed on this amazing look at Batman’s early years. Sherman weaves in the sleuthing with strong writing. Sherman and Farrell bring out the phenomenal views as the case rages to its’ close. The best Bat series may be over for now but hopefully readers will get a second look in the future.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #27 (DC COMICS)

A father’s revenge. How far would one man go to seek atonement for his son’s passing? That is the mystery surrounding “The Quiet Man”. Hitting Gotham City with a vengeance, he has made an immediate statement. The Iceberg Lounge was destroyed. Penguin and Two-Face are scrambling to solve this problem.

The Dynamic Duo is now on the case and walked into the wrong fight. There is also another player hiding in the shadows that is the key to this conflict.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #27 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Fico Ossio, Marcelo Maiolo, and Steve Wands (DC Comics) continues its’ explosive arc.

Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Johnson wastes no time in bringing action to the audience. The firefight in the junkyard ramps up to an uncontrollable level. Readers watch as The Quiet Man shows a few new sides to his personality. One of which is trying to save Damian Wayne. It is the fatherly instinct kicking in that make this surprising. Showing a weakness in his persona makes this mission all more complicated. Readers watch as this becomes more complex as the Quiet Man’s origin starts coming to light. It is a solid reveal that makes Batman reflect on fatherhood while dealing with the media.

Speaking of media, The Daily Planet is assisting in some PR work for Gotham’s famous family. Johnson pens a deep look at Wayne’s struggles in raising Damian, not Robin. Clark Kent’s rebuttal put pieces in proper focus. It is a rare insight into lives readers don’t see often enough. The same can be said for Jon Kent and Damian Wayne. The Super Sons have a fun reunion that injects a breather into the brooding aura. This is sure to be a crowd pleaser before events swing back to closing. Once here, the key player in Quiet Man’s mission gets a rude awakening. Desperation sinks in as a violent past is about to be unlocked for where things head now.

Ossio and Maiolo have set a high bar for the action on display in this series. The opening fight is pouring with high paced combat. If anyone can make the Riddler’s old typewriter into a key action moment, you know they’re doing something right. Everything in this sequence feels big and matching the high stakes involved. The art sneaks in some more subtle timeframes with Damian and the Quiet Man. Little expressions in these stages assist in connecting the character with the audience. A full page image of the Dup swinging away launches events into the more grounded area.

The full page shot of the Kents in Wayne Manor kickstarts a lighter portion of the issue. Damian and Jon’s reactions are priceless as the old friends reconnect. The same can be said for Bruce and Clark. Their talk about fatherhood shows the weight of pressure Bruce puts upon himself. Looking over Gotham’s skyline, the pair showcase their friendship with optimism moving forward. The full image of the dads in costumes signs off on the easier times. The art doesn’t delay in moving readers back into the drama before departing. Final pages lead into an exclamation point end panel. Another strong showing form the art team for this one.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The Quiet Man’s story gets louder with reveals as force Batman to examine an area of needed growth. Johnson weaves in fatherhood issues through an ever evolving tale. Ossio and Maiolo deliver on the energetic action with the art. Don’t miss on what is developing with this current arc.

BATMAN #162 (DC COMICS)

It has been a hot minute but H2SH is returning to comic shops. Tommy Elliot has emerged with a vengeance. After defeating the Joker, Elliot looks to make Batman’s life a living hell. The former childhood “friend” has forced Batman to be the savoir to the Clown Prince of Crime.

His actions haven’t set well with the Bat Family. Jason Todd became involved. He was followed by Damian Wayne and BANE?! Also, Nightwing & Batgirl have an allaince with The Riddler?!

There’s a lot to unpack with this story.

BATMAN #162 by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair, Tyler Smith and Richard Starkings continues its’ very polarizing tale.

We’ve waited long enough. Where do things go from here?

BATMAN #162 by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair, Tyler Smith and Richard Starkings (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Five chapters in and there’s a lot left in question. Loeb’s writing tries establishing Hush’s manipulations on the Bat family. In execution, there are some awkward landing spots. From the initial start here, Batman’s monologue depicts one riddled with extremes. One of which is the brutal method of dealing with his allies. There isn’t a sense that he is the hero in these moments. They come across like a paranoid traveler lost in direction.

The conversation with Catwoman feels more like a brewing fight than a talk between lovers. Readers sense the dialogue won’t flow as easy as it should. There’s never a let-up of Batman’s convictions with self guilt. Even as other Bat-fam arrive, the internal voice never switches off its’ harder takes.

Readers get some relief when Hush is revealed in the shadows. While brief, it chops up the brooding presence of Batman. The Red Hood/Huntress portion feels forced into the mix. Its’ briefness helps get to the close. There’s a few tricks attempted to sway the readers. They never get off the ground as the final page brings Batman into a somewhat full circle moment. There are just too many forced pieces that divert an organic push for Batman’s latest escapades.

Lee and company continue to be the saving grace of this series. Batman’s face-off with his family leads into a solid two page splash. Showing the tragic pasts of Nightwing and Batgirl attempts to make Bat’s moves more sympathetic. This moves events into the Catwoman portion of the book. Their tension is easy to witness. In this capacity, they come across more as bitter enemies than previously star-crossed lovers.

Damian Wayne’s two page splash amps up pacing. While brief, it hits key points before Riddler steals spotlight. Panel set-up puts a good spin on their confrontation. Hush’s attack carries more purpose when unleashed. The half page shot of Huntress deflecting fire ushers in a pause on the brooding. Jason Todd’s party crashing feels very traditional in set-up. Nothing seems too out of place here. Readers watch as the closing gets a few new looks added into play. A bold two page splash kicks in the door for the final page. Bearing witness to the final full page, where things go from here is literally anyone’s guess.

FINAL GRADE: 6

Had it not be for Lee’s art, this story might be all but lost. The writing pushes a tense combative nature between Batman and allies. Lee lifts this chapter higher with excellent visuals. It’s still anyone’s guess where Batman’s latest landing spot takes him.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #13 (DC COMICS)

A line in the sand has been drawn. Ra’s Al Ghul wants the last son of Krypton under his wing. Kal-El wants nothing to do with the tyrant. The demon is not known to take “No” for an answer.

Al Ghul has unleashed his forces onto Smallville. How will the residents fare against The Lazarus Corp?

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #13 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola & Becca Carey heads into the “Battle Of Kansas”.

Let’s take a closer look into the events of combat.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #13 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola & Becca Carey (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron leaves no doubt in readers minds that war is Hell. The opening salvo shows the viciousness of Al Ghul. Attacking the small town with a powerful army is only one example of the lines crossed. The writing also nails another key component. Superman being a symbol of hope shines bright. Even if this may be a losing cause, readers instantly see there will be no quiet surrender.

Another large part of this chapter is Lois Lane & Jimmy Olsen. Both being on different sides of view, their dialogue shows how both have seen a better path. It is reflected in their actions of defense. Aaron throws in a few more inspiring moments before dashing to the swinging close. Readers sense the struggle to maintain moments. This becomes more complicated as Ghul’s reach grows. It ultimately moves into a dire ending spot. The message is very clear. Hope might not be enough for victory to be achieved.

Sandoval and Arreola display the brutality of Al Ghul’s attack in the opening pages. Seeing the residents stand up to fight is filled with mixed emotions. The two page splash of Superman flying in changes everything. It injects the possibility of hope into play. His near full page flying is responded to by awe from onlookers. It becomes the only bright spot in the hell on earth.

Another full page action shot shows Superman taking down some helicopters. As flashbacks start occurring, the expressions from Lois Lane shows the painful acceptance of reality. Readers watch as the action starts ramping up more. Within these pages, the art goes back to the emotional pulls. It is a very even back and forth. Once the smoke clears, there is a definite ending at hand. A full page shot shows Hope’s final moments as the tides appear to have swung once again. Another very strong visual performance.

FINAL GRADE: 9

The Battle Of Kansas proves to be difficult for the Man of Tomorrow to handle. Aaron pens an excellent view of Superman’s impact in crisis. Sandoval and Arreola construct a realistic and violent view of survival. Judging by the final page, time may be out for Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.

BATMAN #3 (DC COMICS)

Dark days loom over Gotham City. Vandal Savage is using the GCPD as his personal army. Jim Gordon has been taken off the board. Without allies in the police force, Batman is faced with a new yet familiar challenge. He has now become their most wanted target.

BATMAN #3 by Matt Fraction, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, & Clayton Cowles continues this unique look at the Dark Knight.

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the mystery.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Fraction opens up events with a family speaking of Gotham’s changes. This is interrupted by Savage’s abuse of power. Watching Batman escape and be framed will strike a nerve. This mood is broken up by a hospital visit. The writing puts Batman at odds with an unlikely “foe”. Their dialogue is sharp but connects the dangers of Savage’s plans via Tim Drake’s status. It camouflages another danger lying in wait.

Readers see Hugo Strange appear in an unlikely role. It serves up the main drama forthcoming. There are other familiar faces in new stat quos that further cement Savage’s plans. The message is quite clear: Savage’s patience has gone. This forces another rogue into the mix. Batman’s fight with the villain feels a sense short. Even brief, it furthers the main drama just enough. In its’ aftermath, Batman leaves with a full page image. It sets the table for a more filling course yet to be revealed.

Jiménez & Morey bring out the viciousness of Savage early. After the solid use of “cellphone panels,” the drama escalates fast. Watching Savage tamper with evidence lowers a dire mood into play. This carries into a hospital ordeal. The maniacal face of Savage brings an intensity to these panels. This becomes quieter once Bruce Wayne runs into a unlikely obstacle.

Having Bernard play off Drake’s “secret life” becomes a fun break. Once the events move into a gritty tone, the story becomes more similar in delivery. Watching Jim Gordon navigates in the shadows leads into a more traditional meeting. Readers watch as a classic rogue makes a monster splash.

A Full page image of Bats undercover handling the threat starts off the closing run. There’s plenty of action for the casual fans. The art shows off Riddler’s unhinged nature. Once in its’ resolution, readers keep focused on the last page. Seeing Batman ride into the night proves more impactful than one may think. The full page images crushed this chapter by banking on the slow roll drama. It is a superb way to exit Gotham for now but not for too long.

FINAL GRADE: 9

The intense feud between Savage and Batman is taken up a level for this chapter. Fraction pens a even balance of drama and thought via the writing. Jiménez and Morey construct amazing visuals to push Batman into deeper water. Best be ready to swim.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire welcomes readers to this timeless era with a easy intro. Seeing glimpses of the key players teases the inevitable. Once the spotlight moves to Alan Grant, the story finds its’ footing. Running into his old friend Gordon plants a few key seeds. One of which is who is pulling the strings on a recent project.

The mystery of Starco slowly starts to peel back its’ layers. Readers watch as the first hero team-up teases many themes. One of which is a dire premonition. Other major players get page time building their own cases. Hawkman’s has a more heroic flare to lead this pack. The writing moves these portions at a steady pace. Events circle back to Scott’s meeting for the close. Scott’s investigation leads into a shocking parting moment. Paired with the narration, it is a fitting ending to this engaging opening salvo.

Guidry helms art duties for this story arc. The opening page carries a vintage aura as the 1940’s come alive. A two page splash ushers in the era with smaller panels. This allows a larger moment to follow. Alan Scott’s conversation gets a stacked look via its’ panels. It draws up the drama being weaved. Both characters’ eye speak volumes.

Once events move to Hourman and Sandman, the display has a new vibe. Their unlikely grouping unveils a shocking image in a mid-shot. It is balanced out in the most action-filled portion of the book. Hawkman’s encounter flows very fast. Atom Smasher hits the scene via half panel. His discoveries tease a dark future. Readers watch as this all gives way to the final page. Seeing Alan Scott in a full page vision teases to danger mounting in the distance. There’s much to enjoy with this chapter.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

A look back into the 1940’s explores the JSA’s foundations. Lemire crosses through a loaded cast to present the impending drama. Guidry and Guerrero deliver on a historic feel with the art. From cover to cover, an engaging tale not to miss.
