BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #36 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid isolates the heroes to their own separate stories. Batman focuses his efforts onto the Floronic Man. Superman tries playing peacemaker with Aquaman and King Ronal. Both have their equal amounts of tension. It pushes both heroes into familiar territory. This works Moreso with Batman than the Man of Steel.

The writing shows Batman’s sly way of using his detective skills. Simple banter peaks into the misguided reasons for the attack. It lends itself into a nice segway for more assistance in dealing with the threat. Superman has a more personal connection in this matter. History with Lori Lemaris overshadows the meeting of kings. As readers hit the final act, both stories unravel at the same time. It concludes the issues with key developments surfacing. Both plots had turning points. How both come back together is one of many questions left after the final page. This is superhero drama at its finest.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain take the drama to new heights with the art. The initial encounter with Batman and the Floronic Man hits with brief action. Readers get a retro style origin page for the big bad of the story. It’s look is very reminiscent of 70’s era comics. Events shoot back to the present and the underwater war set to explode.

The full page image of Aquaman and Mera riding into battle sets the mood perfectly. Even with Superman’s brief involvement, nothing is taken away from the moment. Another full page image spotlights the full onslaught of Ronal’s forces. Readers will excited to see another DC fan favorite crash the party. A near full page image welcomes them to the conflict. As events speed up, the closing page slams the brakes on the pace. The collage of panels unveil more story points that readers won’t want to miss next issue. It’s a solid parting shot of the crisis below the surface.

This carries into a half panel close-up. In this panel, Henshaw is laying out al the cards onto the table. It strikes a chord with the readers. The unstable method of attack moves events solidly back into Montoya’s court.

There are moments of doubt mixed into Montoya’s panels. Only when she dons the mask does this mood disappear. The panels showing her breaking of Animal Man begin her road to reclaiming the tower. Illidge pulls out all the stops for this finale. Using Rocket as a narrator works well for setting the tone. The chapter starts off with an immediate feel of doubt. Her words mirror the high stakes battle between Icon and Alva. Their showdown makes a clear statement to the audience. With the manner he is handling Icon, Alva is nearly unstoppable. The writing pushes Rocket directly into Alva’s path. Even with a future in doubt, her fighting spirit shines. This becomes a catalyst for Dakota’s last stand. Readers will be all in for the final fight. Pacing moves events quickly into its’ climax. Once at this stage, the common theme comes back full circle. This series has been anchored by Rocket. It’s perfectly fitting she becomes the primary factor in its resolution. The closing pages conclude on a firm landing space. One thing is certain for this series: Expect the Unexpected. Snyder continues to redefine the Bat-Verse mythos. In this latest chapter, Batman meets to finalize his deal. The mood never ceases to raise tension. With Alfred’s narration in swing, Batman demonstrates his boldness. The method in which he maneuvers seems all too familiar. Its’ outcome is a fresh take which spirals out of control.

Black Mask is written as an unhinged psychopath pulling all strings. There are no punches pulled. Violence takes over until the final act unfolds. Once here, Wayne’s best plans prove fallible. The outcome steers the story into a dangerous direction. It plays off the counter of Batman’s goals. The results appear that finding hope in Gotham may prove too deadly to chase.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As eluded to, Dr. Mid-Nite takes center stage for this issue. Lemire brings out the tactical side of Beth Chapel. Her dealing with Solomon Grundy is a feat that readers will applaud. The writing unveils Beth’s internal monologue. There is a sense of fear and worry in the tone. It is a natural reaction as she ventures further into the Injustice world.

It doesn’t miss hitting its key points. All roads tie back together with Chapel. The ending is a solid cliffhanger. It is a straight forward superhero ending that keeps the suspense high for what’s next.

Vasquez steps in for art duties with this issue (Guerrero remained on coloring). The faceoff between Chapel and Grundy is given a near full page image. It kickstarts a quick action portion. This gets slowed down for a half panel shot of the Injustice Society. Readers watch as their plans become exposed. It solidly caps off events before switching focus.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #2 by Ryan Parrott, John Ridley, Mike Perkins, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the search for answers growing, this latest chapter leans into building distrust. Palmer and Choi are forming cracks in their partnership. This is all circling around how to handle their friend on the run. The question is posed out loud: what’s more valuable - the man or the project. In the opening sequence, it appears the latter. Readers watch as Palmer’s drive might be more harmful than good.

Captain Atom is growing into a sympathetic figure through this early stage. Pacing continues to tease the eventual turning. It also tries building up a large payoff later. The bear sequence is a surprising one. The fallout seems to get a desired, if not temporary, result. Once events shift back again to the present, the story becomes more clear. Judging by the final pages, there is more mystery getting added to what the endgame here truly is.

Perkins and Lucas starts events off with a full page Atoms image. The pair’s slow decent is clearly written on their faces. It is contrast to the many sides of Captain Atom. ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #4 (DC COMICS)

Kal-El is on the run. After an encounter with the Lazarus Corp., the Last Son Of Krypton made some enemies. One soldier looking for more information is Lois Lane. Lane’s initial run-in with El has begun to consumer her. This doesn’t sit well with some new players known as the Omega Men. Something has to give.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #4 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey brings forth another explosive chapter to the Absolute Universe.

Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding now!

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #4 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron moves the spotlight to Lois Lane for the majority of the issue. Right from the start, Lane’s journalism skills start appearing in her soldier persona. Readers watch as she starts interviewing Superman witnesses. The quest for knowledge leads her into a needed conversation. General Sam Lane comes across as a gruff, concerned parent. It plays well of Lois’s inquisitive mind. The result ushers in some new (and old faces) into the field.

Readers watch as the Omega Men are introduced. Aaron twists their familiar concept. The run-in starts turning into a “cat and Mouse” confrontation. This only becomes more complicated with Peacemakers. With an inflated cast for this chapter, pacing steers into a direct close. It is vintage Superman that scores big. The end results tie back to a loose plot point.

Seeing Peacemaker Smith go through the Lazarus Corp. protocol makes quite the impression. It may seem telegraphed in parts but doesn’t miss its’ landing. This throws the closing pages in flux. With Superman out of the picture, One Peacemaker does the unthinkable. It is a moment that is sure to come back to haunt Lazarus Corp. later. Where this now leads is anyone’s guess.

Sandoval and Arreola set up the interviews in a very throwback way. Using a 9-panel grid adds more context to what begins here. The slower pace fades when Lois must discipline a Peacemaker. A full page image of Lois handling business launches her portion. The banter with her father conveys another story. Each panel amps Lois’ disinterest in what she’s told. Much like her DCU counterpart, when she’s focused, Lois takes over situation like few others.

The Omega Men are presented in a vastly different light. Their use in this story is much more direct than lax. A near full page reveal shows their leader. Panels reflect the highly intense fight. With a red shroud crashes the party, the action goes even higher. It concludes with a vintage Superman power move. Little does anyone realize that Peacemaker Smith has done wrong. A near full page panel brings the horror front and center. Is the world ready for what’s next?

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

With forces maneuvering. Krypton’s last son hits readers with a very thought provoking issue. Aaron pens a tale of drive hidden behind the action. Sandoval and Arreola lock in on the viewpoint of Lois as the latest chapter moves forward. Readers had better brace for what lies on the last page. Don’t miss it!

Gotham City is about to say goodbye to some old friends. After 32 issues, Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jiménez conclude their run on “Batman”. The pair have pushed Bruce Wayne to the edge and back. From “Failsafe” to “Joker: Year One”, there hasn’t been a shortage of exciting tales.

It is no surprise that their final story pulls out all the stops. “The Dying City” has cast a new light on Jim Gordon. Readers watched The Riddler form an uneasy alliance with the Court Of Owls. The result may lead to a global catastrophe. If that wasn’t enough, a new Rogue has entered the game.

Let’s not wait any longer & dive into this conclusion!

BATMAN #157 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tony S. Daniel, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In this parting chapter, Zdarsky swings big. The overall sense of failure weighs heavy on both Batman and Gordon. During his run, both have had set-backs. Batman’s strained family relationship. Gordon’s fall from grace. The writing brings out their true selves. This is evident with Batman’s daredevil attempt to stop Kull from returning to Russia with Riddler’s info.

Pacing keeps rising as stakes become insurmountable. Even when there is one victory, the gravity of Gotham’s last stand never leaves the reader. Zdarsky throws in a few layered showdowns towards the closing act. None might be larger than the face-off internally. Between the action is a struggle. It perfectly brings events full circle with both leads. The result is a bittersweet ending. The conversation between Batman and Gordon puts perspective on the past while closing the chapter with new promise. No better way to say goodbye for now but hopefully not forever.

Jiménez is joined by Daniel for this final outing. Right from the start, Jiménez brings a dramatic flair to the aerial escape. Readers can’t help but be swept up in the chase. It concludes with a bold image of Batman lunging at his latest foe. The mid-panel shot throws a huge exclamation point on this portion.

It is equally matched for Daniel’s portions. The showdown between Riddler and Gordon had been building. Seeing both release their anger lives up to the build. It also provides Gordon something he has been searching for: internal acceptance. With his involvement in Mayor Nakano’s death, the art deals with his tortured conscience. Readers get this moment of calm before the main event starts.

Jiménez closes out the action with a brutal fight. Each panel becomes filled with tensions. Batman realizes there is no turning back. The sheer ferocity of this match connects. It leads into a surprising end before the epilogue. Daniel brings out the pent-up feeling from the heroes. Their reactions speak volumes to the guilt they have been carrying. It leaves readers with a spectacular parting image. A full page vision of Batman via Jiménez ends events with a hopeful thought for what’s next. A bittersweet ending indeed.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.6

Zdarsky and Jiménez leave it all in the pages as their epic run concludes! The thrilling last stand of Gotham is cemented with strong writing and phenomenal art. Readers simply can’t afford to pass on saying goodbye and hope this pair returns to Gotham’s streets sooner than later.

GREEN LANTERN #19 by Jeremy Adams, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Jason Paz, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Dave Sharpe launches the newly reformed Corps into “the Fractured Spectrum” saga!

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams dives into the new beginnings for Hal Jordan and company. The opening of this issue delves into Carol Ferris’ life as a JLU member. Seeing Ferris hold her own amongst the DCU’s heavies provides a fun set-up before Jordan crashes the party. With the two getting some quiet time, The writing blends their hero worlds with their relationship. It’s a solid break before events shift towards another familiar face.

Kyle Rayner’s mission with Odyssey leads to another addition to the cast. Readers will be amped up to see who’s added into the book rescue mission. Pacing devotes a lengthy period to get this all established. Once settled, the story briefly spotlights Sorrow’s alliance. There is a larger picture painted in the closing act. The case lead provides more surprises. None might be larger than the final page. It leaves many questions as the latest saga finally starts taking shape.

This issue has three artists on taking the image reigns. The Justice League conflict opens with a full page action splash. It shows the readers how the team is working. As the threat starts growing stronger, Hal Jordan crashes the conflict. The full page intro changes the mood. Ferris’ reaction beams with excitement. This is a stark difference than Batman’s brooding. Jordan and Ferris never let the audience escape their bond as events are playing out.

Rayner experiences more of the same with Odyssey. The full page shot grants the time traveler access to the issue. Odyssey isn’t the only one with a full page welcome. A recruited heavy hitter is gifted the same favor. Readers watch as the contrasting personalities light up the panels. As events steer back toward the mission, the art team changes the look for the closing act. The pages carry a dark tone until the final reveal. A closing full page splash is at the end of a haunting lead-in. It will have readers guessing what’s next as the story takes shape.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

Let’s take a closer look to see where events play out.

SUPERMAN: LEX LUTHOR SPECIAL #1 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson crafts the ultimate lose-lose situation for the Man of Steel. With Lex losing his memory, he is a completely new person. Finding a conscience and sense of humanity has done wonders. Lex’s troubled past is sprinkled in throughout the story. It makes Superman’s dilemma much worse. Giving a sense of sympathy to Luthor will hit readers with an unexpected response.

The story never lets up of the pressure on Superman. This becomes clear when a walk in the park becomes an incident. Superman’s conversation leads into a question of morals with this move. Readers watch as the outcome becomes a larger catalyst than expected. Cracks in the foundation had been forming between the two characters. Superman’s reaction becomes more than realized. After another flashback, the story leads into its’ concluding point. Judging where it appears to be heading, there may not be any good solution for a bad man’s future.

Barrows opens up the issue with a quiet father-daughter moment with the Luthors. It doesn’t take long for some action to creep in. The two page action splash works perfectly here. It allows for the set-up with Superman making the call. A full page splash by Barrows shows what the wrong choice can lead to.

Once events move to the park, the mood lightens until an incident goes down. Superman crashes the scene with a near full page image. The conversation between enemies pours with consequences. Ferreira’s flashback sequences keep adding more layers to that foundation. Readers watch as a half panel tips off where things may lead. The closing act is very deceptive as it appears an issue was addressed. Happiness is fleeting as the pieces start coming together. Readers watch as a full page image delivers a mic drop as the DCU may never be the same again.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The rebirth of Evil? That is the problem facing Superman in a soul-stirring tale. Williamson throws in emotional reflections before heading into a difficult move. The art team shines with big moments mirroring the heavy soul of a great hero. No good choice ever works without grave consequences.

“The Diamond That Steals Back” Grade :9

The writing presents Catwoman faced with a cursed diamond. Oswalt and Blum lean intot he curse as Selina Kyle struggles to cope. The nightmare set-up swings quickly into a crime caper. Readers watch as Kyle starts tracking down the fault of her score. It results in a very unique and fitting fashion. The closing ties up events perfectly. It never steers away from Catwoman’s crime life. Readers couldn’t ask for a better finish.

A unique “diamond centered” page breaks down the key history of the object. Readers watch as a certain Gotham fixture steps up for the diamond. Its’ result is a crowd pleaser of panels. The art gives readers something to smile about as the closing page hits. There’s a lot to enjoy here.

“A Matter of Life and Undeath” grade: 8.8

This tale takes place in the 30th century. Seasoned DCU fans know this is the Legion of Superheroes Era. MEL is a very tricky character to work with. When the power is to “eat Matter”, it allows some options. Kostanski and Hay play up the uniqueness. A change of heart leads into a mission to stop a zombie outbreak. The writing gives off a redemption arc for the hero. It is quirky and campy. Both are perfect for MEL. Readers watch the insanity unfold. Events close with a solid finish with no room for leftovers.

Faerber takes the art in to a more pop feel to begin. Once the mission comes up front, MEL is challenged to finish. The challenge is in all its’ gruesome glory. Once it attacks, a touch of fear fills the panels. MEL’s reactions knowing what he has done are priceless. Even with the zombies on the loose, MEL’s reactions front a good wall of confidence. Once events arrive at the showdown, a near full page image shows a hero’s redemption. The final panels reclaim its’ more friendly tone. Even in his faults, MEL conveys to the readers he is the only one who can stomach this challenge (literally).

FINAL POINT: 8.9

The final round of Horror and heroes doesn’t disappoint in its’ close. Each story carried a different vision that will work on readers. The Catwoman tale is filled with sharp writing and solid art. MEL’s problem spirals into a unique place via strong work from the creative team. It’s one not to pass on this week at the LCS!

The world of the DC Universe is changed forever. An initiative has created the Ultimate Justice League. A rotating team of heroes handling the dangers. Even with this movement, there are issues looming. Not everyone is on board. A traitor appears lurking in the shadows. It’s hard to believe but that might be the least of their worries.

Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds now!

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #3 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ariana Maher (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With this chapter, there are a great deal of tie-in’s to other series. It is very refreshing to see the overall reach of “All In”. Readers get a big injection of “The Atom Project” saga. The Atoms and Plastic Man showcase the project plan with an easy example. Waid dabbles into it enough without leaving the main driver behind. This is all about the JLU vs the dangerous Inferno. As the action escalates, so does the uncertainty.

The fires raging in the Amazon provides a big event. Seeing the team adapt on the fly provides great shake-ups. It also gives some surprises. The dialogue tries cyphering the riddles of the mysterious figure. Waid’s writing plants doubt into the heroes. The result shows one hero making a bold dash into the chaos. Seeing the overreaction proves a flaw in the league design. This drives the closing act. Having a lead, the team reaches out for a powerful ally. What they find hits the audience with a thunderous statement. A huge blow is dealt that might be too great to overcome.

Mora and Bonvillain tease the calm before the storm with the opening pages. Watching JLU members on the “off time” helps to feature the vast roster. Once the Amazon drama unfolds, the JLU does what they do best. Fantastic art raises the stakes of the magical fight. The art gives each panel a huge feel. It never escapes the reader even with the story detours.

The “Atom Project” section spotlights a larger side story. Seeing the after effects of “Absolute Power” is blunt with a mid panel image. The panels explain the secret mission. It also eludes into the dangers behind it. Once events go back to the Amazon, the art hits with an iconic Aquaman half panel. It is quickly followed by a near full page guest spot. The mood swings quickly as the final panels change everything as the League struggles to find a break.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Inferno makes a big statement as the JLU is searching for answers. Waid’s writing hits with big moments and building side-plots. The art of Mora and Bonvillain keeps the action intense as moves are made. DC’s premier team doesn’t slow down in giving fans a blockbuster chapter.

SUPERMAN #22 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher presents an ever-mounting challenge towards Superman and Superwoman.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what unfolds now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

“The Enemy of My Enemy”. What a complex corner Superman has been put into. Williamson has thrown a no win challenge into place. As the people of Calatron arrive, they demand Doomsday. Their offer is one that makes sense on many levels. It also sounds too good to be true. Leave it to two reporters to cypher through the front. The writing exposes both sides to come to a lie in wait. It leads to an expected response.

Knowing what Doomsday has done, it’s a justifiable rage. Pacing picks up as the frantic reactions take hold. The true threat here comes unto focus. Longtime Superman fans can appreciate the character’s reintroduction. Williamson leads readers into the fray with an unlikely team-up. It leans itself into a shocking direction. Right before it plays out, a switch is played for the close. A new character is taxed with handling the heavy choice. It’s an excellent spot to conclude events for now, but not for long.

Mora and Sanchez welcome readers into the tense landscape with a gorgeous two page spread. As the conversation starts between the “super couple” and invaders, the tensions rise. Each panel brings out more hesitation and fear. It reflects what is at stake. Readers watch as eventually things boil over to an extreme reaction.

An incredible full page blast brings a familiar competitor into the mix. As they maneuver through the book, the excitement grows. Readers can sense how intense this conflict is becoming. Seeing a direct close-up of Superman’s face defines this. It rolls into a jaw-dropping two page shot. Once the smoke clears, prepare for the final page. The art team leaves readers with a final full image that throws more weight on an already heavy decision.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

The burden of Doomsday starts breaking the Man of Steel in an exciting new chapter. Williamson takes readers for a thrilling ride. Mora, Sanchez and Maher never stop delivering on bold moments from start to finish. Just when you think you have answers, the creative team swerves with a great twist. Get ready for it!

BLACK CANARY: BEST OF THE BEST #3 by Tom King, Ryan Sook, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

King twists events around with a few notable guests stopping by. The addition of Batman into the equation elevates Lance’s plans. Who else knows how to fight Shiva better? Their banter exposes Lance’s lies for the fight. Batman knows this match has never been about self-pride. Lance sticks to her guns even though the foundation cracks. It leaves the pair at a stand-still. This is reflected with Lance’s deal with a savage devil.

Using her mother’s health as a weapon, Savage throws down his deal. It plays into Lance’s struggles. Readers watch as the end justifies the painful means. The result puts Lance on her painful collision course. King handles the fight pace with a touch of wrestling flare. Wildcat’s interview style will win over readers. It doesn’t work so well on Shiva. Once in the closing pages, the pendulum swings. It leaves events pushing Lance into a new course. Whether she survives is long enough is anyone’s guess.

Sook and Stewart keep the best of the squared circle in the spotlight. The interview page with Wildcat is a fun start. Readers sit back and watch the action fly. The art locks in on Shiva’s confidence beaming. Her dive to the outside of the ring is prime example. A subtle panel of a devilish smirk speaks volumes. Lance is not to be outdone. A page close up shows Lance is broken but ready to fight. This might have something to due with a sparring partner.

Once the flashback hits, Batman is welcomed with a full page shot. Their sparring session is more than technique. The art closes in on Lance trying to keep up the deception. As readers see Vandal Savage make his offer, things become clear. The images are straight forward as both don’t want to tip their hands. It results in a set-up in brutality. The Wildcat fight is crushing. It spawns two full page images of the fight turning. The chapter closes on a quieter moment. A small conversation grows more doubts as events conclude. The art packs an overhand right for this sequence.

FINAL POINT: 9

The truth starts coming to light in another round of combat for Dinah Lance. King balances the brutality with Lance’s internal struggle. Sook, Stewart and Cowles amp up the combat as the fight escalates forward. Gear up for another round because no final bell has rung yet!

DETECTIVE COMICS #1093 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, and Wes Abbott (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor opens up with a flashback sequence fans have been waiting for. The tie in to Thomas Wayne has been left to boil. Its’ tease drops a small foreshadowing. Wayne’s newest love has ties to that era. Readers have to wait as Bats enlists the family for help. The dialogue has many ranges. It all carries a center theme. Has Batman’s judgement been clouded with his current flame?

The result leads into Batman confronting Asema head on. It never falters on excitement. The action is paced out well. A key moment changes directions for Batman. It is one that is too be expected. That said, it doesn’t hold back on impact. The closing pages leave a new wrinkle on the case. Where it leads can only be to no good.

Janin begins with a striking opening sequence. The flashbacks are filled with rage and sorrow as a young Bruce addresses Chill’s partner. The story jumps back into present with a full page credits roll. Seeing the Bat family in action adds another layer to the story. Their role grows further when Batman arrives at a meet-up. The various members offer their input about current events. Janin captures each’s expressions as the pieces start forming the puzzle.

Asema’s showdown with Batman steals this spotlight. The use of panels plus Abbott’s lettering elevates this to new heights. Readers watch as the brutal fight holds nothing back. Each page escalates the frantic mood. Once an unplanned move happens, the fight slows down. This leads into a simple but touching image of Bats and the latest victim. It rolls right into the closing sequence. Once the final page hits, readers are left with a strong final panel. It leaves no questions as how personal this case has become for the Dark Knight.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #35 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid takes readers into the depths with this latest installment. Adding Aquaman into the mix provides a fun dynamic. The banter between him and Robin keeps things light-hearted until its’ time to spring into action. Once here, things change drastically. The outbreak of a virus causes havoc. It also pushes various parties to the brink of war.

Lori Lemaris and King Ronal have conflicting views of more heroes involved. Waid plays off the history of Lemaris and Superman very well. It even draws out a smile from Batman. The good feelings don’t last for long. Readers watch as there is more unravelling taking place. Once the play is made, the World’s finest is on their defensive. It also puts Aquaman into a crossfire. The orchestrated attack seems to have a surprising mastermind behind it. Judging by the last page, fans are in for a very wild ride.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain bring an exciting vision of the seven seas to life. The opening full page shot of Poseidonis and Tritionis gives a small insight to the larger issue later on. Seeing how the virus is infecting connects with readers. It’s a vast contrast form the peaceful moments with Aquaman and the other heroes. The art gives a calmer picture before heading head first into conflict.

Once underwater, the action sequences start to take off. This leads to a reunion of Superman and Lemaris. The reactions of the characters display tells of an underlying issue in wait. Ronal’s disdain for Superman is clearly evident. This plays into their conflict later in the chapter. Aquaman doesn’t escape the anger either. The people of his kingdom unite in a striking group shot (which pops due to Wands lettering). Pacing moves things right along as the conclusion hit. The last page reveals a shocking figure via full page spread. It will definitely catch readers for a loop. Leave it to the creative team to end things on such an exclamation point.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The World’s Finest plunge into danger with their latest tale. Waid’s writing sets up a multi-layered front. Gutiérrez, Bonvillain and Wands construct a strong vision of conflicts under the sea. This will be one for fans to check out.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS)

Renee Montoya’s latest case is a doozie. As the new security on the JL watchtower, Montoya seeks answers. Kenn Kawa is left for dead. The evidence points to Batwoman. With the past personal relationship weighing in, Is Montoya’s judgement clouded? There’s little time to process as the Eradicator has entered the field. This problem might be more than The Question can possibly answer.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert continues to expose the attack on the Justice League’s home turf.

Let’s take a closer look at the latest installment.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Segura puts Montoya into a very unforeseen scenario. The case has spiraled into a more complex situation. Kawa being the intended target remains a mystery why. As she goes through her findings, Montoya is forced into some confrontations. The tense reunion with Batwoman proves to create a difficult path for answers. The writing never lets the tension escape until a situation forces a pivot.

With the Eradicator involved, readers watch as Montoya amps up her efforts. The methods she evokes are driven by rage. Pacing has done a great job in slowly building this reaction up. Once Montoya unloads, it makes a statement. This blinds her to what is really going on. In the shadows, moves are being made. This is very familiar in set-up. The responsible party is anything but predictable. Once the mastermind behind all of this is revealed, this moves Montoya’s efforts into a dire corner. Rest assured, the last page will lock in readers for the next chapter.

Tormey and Fajardo Jr. break down recent events nicely within the first few pages. This leads into a full page image of Montoya’s reluctant partner on the case. Coloring works perfectly on the attack of Ted Kord. The use of shadows connects with readers as the mastermind is slowly revealed.

It’s a big contrast to Montoya questioning The Eradicator. The art depicts the emotional release that’s been growing in Montoya. Eradicator’s reactions only prompt more out of the The Question. It is a scene that steals what’s happening in the background. Once the main attack begins, the mood shifts. Montoya’s reactions reflect the shocking turn of events. The panel structure raises the moments before the final page. Once there, a full page image hits as business has picked up for Montoya’s search for truth on the watchtower.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Lurking in the shadows is an unlikely truth in The Question’s latest case. Segura’s writing delves into the toll taken on Montoya while the mastermind makes their debut. Tormey, Fajardo Jr. and Schubert bring on the bad guys with strong imagery. Brace for the last page’s impact!
