Right from the opening page, one question rings true: “Why does Phillips Hate Eddie?” I’m completely kidding but the opening page hits readers with tremendous force. Sealing a tragic fate opens up the next round in the ultimate face-off. Jessica and The End’s game continues to pose many questions. The writing adds more weight into the multi-layered themes of this series. It also establishes if Jessica can continue to handle the gravity of her destine path.

The End’s challenges make readers deeply think about concepts of the life/death connection. Jessica’s banter with her challenger leads to strong moments. Phillips leaves Jessica very vulnerable to the questions looming. It only endears her more to the audience. Once a choice is made, her path takes a fresh new turn. Many possibilities feel open at this stage. This leaves room for a more surprising epilogue. Judging by who takes center stage, it’s very clear Jessica’s actions have caused a major ripple effect. How this plays out will be exciting to watch.

Flaviano and Renzi deliver on the emotions with Eddie’s fate revealed. Renzi’s coloring takes this to new heights. It quickly transitions to a strong full page of Jessica and The End continuing their game. Seeing Jessica’s pent-up emotions released makes quite the impact. This transitions into the current stat quo problem. The End poses a deep question via full page image. This causes Jessica to react with much pause in her voice.

As the story transitions to a new destination, the questions weight begins to show on both. The art locks in the discovery portion of the answers. This moves the story into a very unique point. Renzi’s light coloring gives away the sense of wonder. The reactions of joy and wonder are written on Jessica’s face. This is a much different place than the epilogue. The final page gives the readers a startling reveal before mic dropping a massive change in Jessica’s world. Time in and time out, this team doesn’t miss.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Jessica & The End take their dangerous game to another level with this latest installment. Phillips poses many threads to the reader with phenomenal writing. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano convey the overwhelming emotions of the struggle at hand flawlessly. There truly is nothing like this series at the comic shops.

Since 1992, the world of SPAWN has been a vision unmatched in comics. Al Simmons’ adventures have grown into the pop culture landscape. At first glance, Thornwall’s mission is very clear cut. After confronting Spawn, the narration exemplifies how determined she is about getting Simmons. The story shifts gears to an earlier time which gives Thornwall more layers. Readers watch as a mission in Cape Flats, South Africa is more than meets the eyes.

The writing escalates the action as Thornwall crashes the devilish meeting. It is an unforgiving scenario with a tense tone. The dialogue is very direct esp. when dealing with the aftermath. Her words are a solid blend of magic and military. It is very clear Thornwell isn’t hero nor villain. This theme is carried into the issue’s strongest segment.

Thornwell’s confrontation with Simmons ten years prior is the main event readers expect. Knowing their espionage/covert work, the dialogue hits the bullseye. The writing never holds back on the brutality of their work. It also gives definitive clarity on her current mission. Readers watch as the aftermath of this scenario pushes into the close. Once here, Thornwell’s actions define her conflicting persona. The mission is very clear but weaves many elements throughout. Going by the last page, there will plenty of blood shed before its all said and done.

Rosado & Alonso start events off with a bold image. Seeing Spawn at the feet of Bloodletter is an instant shock moment. The near full page panel gives her a big spotlight before the dive begins. Once events shift to Cape Flats, the art brings out the sinister elements at play. Thornwell’s expression is stone as she handles her business. There’s only a few moments where this changes. This is true with Casper, her partner in this quest.

Readers see the lengths she goes into her planning. One method is drilled home via a half page panel. This becomes a segway for the tragic flashback on Haiti. The violence flows easy on the pages as the two forces meet up. Simmons comes across as ever defiant to his opposition. This ushers everything into the present close. A two page splash paints a brutal picture. Its’ fallout leaves an unapologetic image that haunts. With the final page, readers know they’ve just started a journey that no one will win.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

Is it the end for Al Simmons? Illidge & Seeley walk the line of payback and paranormal with their writing. Rosado and the art team are dropping intense imagery at every page. The Spawn Universe has another monster hit on their hands with this series.

Nobody in Comics does slow-burn drama like SIKTC. The beginning of this chapter is innocent enough. Tynion throws in more “normal” moments between two boys at a store. Their banter is playful enough until a sheriff walks in. The small town has a problem with a rising body count of children. Readers know it’s only a formality until Erica Slaughter arrives to investigate.

The dialogue with Jessica and Erica lends itself for a touch of comic relief. Seeing the young Erica having to cover tracks for Jessica proves a possible disconnect. It lends itself to ease back into the building drama. Tynion’s writing constructs a clear picture of what is unfolding. The closing pages re-enforce the dangers looming in the small town’s forest. It ends events on a striking finish while teasing an inevitable confrontation.

Dell’edera and Muerto welcomes readers into the quiet small town scenery. The panels reflect the snowy chill taking hold of the residents. Readers watch as the two clerks provide a pause for the rising drama. The facial reactions with the sheriff deliver on growing the threat lurking in the town. They also amplify when help arrives at their doorstep to help.

The interactions with Rainey, Jessica and Erica put more of a spotlight on Jessica than first thought. The two page spread confirms Jessica’s misdirection. It also leads into exposing Erica’s growing confidence in hunting. The remainder of the chapter steers back towards the threat reveal. Panels are more candid in delving into the problem. The closing pages tie into the full exposure of what’s causing the havoc. A striking full page image puts a definitive stamp on what is brewing. Fans should have no doubt what is on the horizon here.

Erica’s latest flashback case starts setting the foundation of a can’t miss story here. Tynion plays the slow drama perfectly with the writing. Dell’edera and company lock in on the quiet backdrop to the rising threat in question. Whenever you head into an SIKTC tale, brace for the long haul. The payoffs never miss.

Tynion plays his best hand early in this chapter. The trademark of this series is the slow burn drama. In the opening, a young Erica attends the services of a fallen victim. It is reflected in the narration a connection to a recent monster hunt. the dialogue with one of the family members depicts the emotional coldness needed for the line of work. Readers see a lengthier example of this with Jessica Slaughter.

The relationship between mentor and student is complex at best. Readers watch as Jessica is wearing down to the grind of the business. It is also noted as to the forming of Erica’s personality in this mix. Her interactions with Aaron Slaughter are prime points of this. Their dialogue ranges from playful to business. Tynion never lets the mood sway too far from the looming danger of the Order. A new assignment draws many reactions. It teases the audience long enough to hook them in. There’s no better example than the last page. Settle in for a new case with deadly overtones.

Dell’edera and Muerto start events off at a funeral. With no dialogue for two pages, they walk readers through the somber times. The mix of flashback panels to present mirror what Erica is thinking. It is a prime set-up before heading back to reality.

The interactions with Jessica and Erica feel organic with their connection. There’s a sense of “business as usual” in each panel. Erica’s acceptance of this “normal” is written on her face. This transcends to a solid two page spread. The brief panels segway to her contact with Aaron. Panel set-up moves their conversation right along to its ending place. The art sets up a tease of more dangers in their new assignment. This plays up to the last page perfectly. Like a true horror movie, the full page image jinxes itself with the dialogue. It’s a great place to pause for now and reload for what’s coming next.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

SIKTC comes back with its’ winning formula inisde of a flashback saga. Tynion puts the major players in place with the writing. Dell’edera and Muerto bring the complex relationships into the spotlight before setting off on their next job. The early days of Erica Slaughter are ones that warrant the attention of fans whenever they drop on NCBD.

Snyder flips another classic mythos into a familiar wheelhouse. Taking Mr. Freeze’s origin to an even more tragic place works on many levels. Knowing Snyder’s impeccable Horror storytelling, the new take is brilliant. It is exactly what the Absolute Universe represents. This is no “cookie cutter” portrait of the DCU. It is a much darker place in tone and direction.

This point comes across when “the Rogues” address recent events. The conversation peels back the layers of Wayne’s secret life. Readers watch as the emotions surface and boil. It reflects the pain of losing one of their own. In some ways, that has already happened. Snyder pens the unforgiving view of Batman in a much harsher tone. It results in a few flashback moments. Once in the close, there’s a great twist set in place. Readers will watch in shock as another change has happened that no even the Dark Knight is ready for.

Martín & Vicente step in for art duties. The innocent start of Fries’ tale begins with a two page credits image. Cowles lettering tips off the impending terror. The use of coloring makes the “rogues” portion pop off pages. Vicente uses many shadows to hide faces. Snyder’s dialogue drives the body languages. Marin’s pencils only give silhouettes. It leaves elements up to the readers to decide. These panels switch gears from the tension driven flashback with Fries.

A familiar name makes a timely exit in this chapter. The near half page image sends a strong message to readers. This leads into an incredible two page splash of Batman in the night sky. Readers watch as the Fries story becomes front and center. It reveals a few horror inspired elements. This is complemented by a full page image painting a frosty picture. Events ultimately push into the closing page. The art team leaves one more shocking image before ducking out. After readers see this, there will be no doubt of how broken this new landscape truly is.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The re-introduction of a classic rogue pushes Batman into a horrific vision with this chapter. Snyder leans heavy into a frightening take with the writing. Martín & Vicente presents a cleaner, yet dark perspective on his latest drama with the art. Brace for quite the terrifying tale unfolding now.

Few things have been referred to as unavoidable. Death is one of those subjects. It can also be said Destiny is in that mix. Jessica Harrow’s life is a combination of both. Being the heir to Death’s throne, Harrow has tried outrunning this path. How will she fare when Time tracks her down?

Leave it to Phillips and company to throw more surprises into a deeply woven tale. The introduction is very familiar to long-time readers. As it progresses, this changes quickly. Phillips plays off Jessica’s deciphering to bring forth the latest addition to the cast. It also puts Jessica into a unique position. Her avoidance of her destiny has been a main driver for her character. This issue showcases many possibilities (along with great one-liners) as different timelines are shown.

None might be as stronger hitting than the last one. It is a vision that can be unavoidable. The writing vents Jessica’s frustration. As someone who wants her own choices, it seems that might be out of her control. This leads into a very shocking confrontation. Another factor has been thrown into this equation. Phillips places a fantastic twist that will catch readers off-guard. It serves as a perfect cliffhanger for Jessica as she searches for answers but finds more questions waiting. Top level storytelling at its’ finest.

Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano provide a re-imagining of a classic moment to start events off. If anyone has questions about great lettering, Napolitano instantly reminds everyone why he’s one of the best. This leads into a full page image that is anything but a rewind. From here, the journey for Jessica stops by a new timeline. The “college days” hides the underlying themes while mixing in enjoyable moments.

This is all capped off by a gorgeous two page splash of multiple timelines. There are great easter eggs homages planted in the spread (“Eight Limbs”!). Time and Jessica’s confrontation carries a tension to it that makes the close even stronger. Flaviano and Renzi crafts stellar half page splits of timelines. This builds to the final full page panel. The mic drop moment is guaranteed to lock readers in until the next chapter drops.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

Jessica Harrow is confronted with an unavoidable fate in another spectacular chapter of “Grim”. Phillips’ writing blends in a new dynamic while challenging Jessica’s fate. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano continue to prove why they’re one of comics best creative art teams with their high caliber work. There’s nothing like this series at the LCS!

“The Diamond That Steals Back” Grade :9

The writing presents Catwoman faced with a cursed diamond. Oswalt and Blum lean intot he curse as Selina Kyle struggles to cope. The nightmare set-up swings quickly into a crime caper. Readers watch as Kyle starts tracking down the fault of her score. It results in a very unique and fitting fashion. The closing ties up events perfectly. It never steers away from Catwoman’s crime life. Readers couldn’t ask for a better finish.

Earls and Canola hit the shock factor early. The full page nightmare of “The Wayne Family” sets a high bar. It leads into the fight for Kyle to regain control. Her interrogation methods shine. A unique “diamond centered” page breaks down the key history of the object. Readers watch as a certain Gotham fixture steps up for the diamond. Its’ result is a crowd pleaser of panels. The art gives readers something to smile about as the closing page hits. There’s a lot to enjoy here.

“A Matter of Life and Undeath” grade: 8.8

This tale takes place in the 30th century. Seasoned DCU fans know this is the Legion of Superheroes Era. MEL is a very tricky character to work with. When the power is to “eat Matter”, it allows some options. Kostanski and Hay play up the uniqueness. A change of heart leads into a mission to stop a zombie outbreak. The writing gives off a redemption arc for the hero. It is quirky and campy. Both are perfect for MEL. Readers watch the insanity unfold. Events close with a solid finish with no room for leftovers.

Faerber takes the art in to a more pop feel to begin. Once the mission comes up front, MEL is challenged to finish. The challenge is in all its’ gruesome glory. Once it attacks, a touch of fear fills the panels. MEL’s reactions knowing what he has done are priceless. Even with the zombies on the loose, MEL’s reactions front a good wall of confidence. Once events arrive at the showdown, a near full page image shows a hero’s redemption. The final panels reclaim its’ more friendly tone. Even in his faults, MEL conveys to the readers he is the only one who can stomach this challenge (literally).

FINAL POINT: 8.9

The final round of Horror and heroes doesn’t disappoint in its’ close. Each story carried a different vision that will work on readers. The Catwoman tale is filled with sharp writing and solid art. MEL’s problem spirals into a unique place via strong work from the creative team. It’s one not to pass on this week at the LCS!

RIPPERLAND #1 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

A murder in 2188 London is eerie similar to a past evil. Kenneth Fitzpatrick is the grandson of a wealthy American mogul. This causes a great deal of tension between the post-Brexit England and US. One question is now posed onto the law enforcement. Jack the Ripper is back? Can they stop a serial killer before its too late?

RIPPERLAND #1 by Steve Orlando, John Harris Dunning, Alessandro Oliveri, Francesca Vivaldi and Fabio Amelia unleashes terror onto the streets of 22nd Century London.

The writing steers the audience into a classic horror set-up. Detective Edwin Fogg comes across as a grizzled officer. It is easy to tell he’s seen much in his time. The reception to Fitzpatrick is unwelcomed. His brash arrogance isn’t winning him any favors. It reflects the social standoff taking place. Everything comes to a head when Fitzpatrick is found violently killed.

The added dynamic of Jesse Holden gives Fogg someone to banter with. Readers watch as the clash of culture starts battling for page time. Knowing what is at stake, the pair makes a go of trying to work together. Once in the closing arc, there seems to be some common ground forming. The pair cyphers Ripper’s style in the killing. That appears to be the only thing “normal” here. Judging by the end panel, there is more to a simple case than meets the eye.

Oliveri & Vivaldi give readers much to ponder with the art. The version of London is a fitting throwback to yesteryear. It is dark and gloomy. There are some bright spots but none lasting so long. Fogg’s confrontation with a thief provides a break of pace. It also diverges before the issue’s main case is exposed.

The two page spread of Fitzpatrick’s body is a shocking sight. It leads to Holden’s arrival to London. The one page image makes a statement as the case gears up. With their first meeting, Fogg and Holden get a half page to showcase their standoff. It leaves readers in a position for the close. Once the final panel hits, a startling image floods the mid size shot. It is a solid close as much is to process before the next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

The new age murder mystery of Jack The Ripper starts on a solid note. Orlando and Dunning delve into past themes for this future take of London crime. Oliveri, Vivaldi and Amelia delve into the grizzly violent act and an international incident in the making. All the ingredients for a series to remember.

The Creature Unit has arrived. Whether or not the world is ready or not remains to be seen. There’s a certain level on mystery surrounding this group. Dr. West might have bitten off more than she can chew with this squad. Plus, what is Brainiac scheming in the shadows?

Dastmalchian brings Vincent Velcro front and center for this issue. The dive into the backstory spotlights the vampire’s ill fated rescue attempt. His conversation with Dr. West reflects his loss and gives some clarity on to why he’s willing to work with Dr. West. Once events shift gears, the chapter heads into the combustible personalities put together for the mission at hand.

There is a certain element of “honor amongst theives” that carries in this series. Dr. West’s rally cry strikes where it needs to. Her hand is forced as Wanda (Shrieve) stumbles across a dead monster morgue in the base. Ultimately, the talk is swayed with orders of action. The latter portion of the book give time to the larger DCU stars involved, but events feel a touch rushed heading into the close. Once at the conclusion, the final page lands on a solid cliffhanger. It does its’ job leaving readers wanting more but could have been more impactful on its’ execution.

Hervás and Guimarães present Velcro’s rescue attempt with some striking imagery. The full page shot of him taking fire kicks things off in a big way. It’s followed by a more reactionary look with seeing his plans fall short. The expressions he gives speaks loudly to readers.

Another moment is Wanda’s discovery of the monster morgue. The near full page shot hits with its reveal. This shifts events towards a flashback involving Morgaine Le Fey. The full page image gives a clearer picture of Medusa’s past while sorting her place with the unit. Brainiac gets his fair share of panel time as he works in shadows. This boils over to Zatanna’s part. The closing image leads into a starling unveiling. How things play from here is literally anyone’s guess.

FINAL POINT: 7.5

With a solid portion of the story devoted to one character, the latest chapter deals with a pacing issue. Dastmalchian’s writing works with reaching the audience on Velcro’s story. The art brings into focus the troubled past with hopes for a better future. The only downside is Brainiac and Zatanna’s parts felt rushed. That said, the story looks to pick up speed with the mission finally starting its engines.

Considering this is written by one of the “Pocus Hocus” architects, one might think there would be a mix of humor and horror. Dunford throws a curve and dishes up a dark superhero tale. Readers watch as the family bond is pushed when Andrue is kidnapped. As Lani valiantly chases for her brother, the first of a few shocks is revealed. It’s paced out well so nothing is overshadowed. The tense feel comes to a biol when the mysterious figure crashes the scene.

Dunford debuts the lead character with a big splash. It is very heroic in fashion. There is just enough revealed to connect with the audience. The writing also leaves a few outstanding questions to ponder before the close. At this stage, the story shifts gears to a steady finish. It perfectly walks the line of too much or too little. After this conclusion, readers will be wanting another round with “The Boogeyman” asap.

Catraca slowly builds up the horror with the opening pages. It’s capped off with a bold full page of the monster’s attack. This event leads into a window visual with “missing” posters. Readers can sense the eerie build growing from here for Andrue and Lani. With a simple eye-reflection panel, the book jumps into danger with its’ next phase.

The art crafts a very catching panel of danger. With the use of red coloring, a close-up of Lani hits big. This moment kicks off the heroic entrance of the mysterious lead. Catraca goes full action (with a big assist from Lentz) with a thunderous punch. A two page splash will make a huge imprint on readers as the fight begins. Loo has taken some bold swings with this current run. Taking a trip to the Savage Land is another case of pushing Russell into uncharted waters. The interactions with Ka-Zar provides a fresh challenge. Even Zabu can’t escape the wrath of the Werewolf.

When the story shifts to the Hood’s plans, there is a slower pace for readers to follow. It’s a more low key build, maximizing the deceit in question. Once the final pages kick in, the payoff finishes with a solid close. Both parts run equal enough to give an enjoyable read.

The art flourishes when the story hits the Savage Land. Davina’s take is filled with big panels. Seeing Russell take down a Tyranosauros Rex is a big statement for the readers. They will also have a reaction with Zabu’s involvement.

Its fallout shows off Ka-Zar’s skills. The fight is brutal and everything one would want with this standoff. In comparison, the Hood story panels stay steady in keeping the methodical pace of the story. Only when the last page hits does the image jump at readers. It’s an image showing that the story is very far from over.

Since its’ return from a brief hiatus, the direction of Grim has been spotlighting featured characters. Delving into their backstories has provided many new layers to each involved. This issue focuses on a relationship many have been waiting to find out about: Death and Lilah. Phillips orchestrates this with many twists and turns before hitting readers with an emotional punch.

Death is portrayed as a lovestruck soul questioning all he knows. On the other hand, Lilah is very comfortable in her sexual preferences as his “partner”. It is a unique dynamic that stretches through this chapter. Even with the assist of the world’s best in psychoanalysis, Death struggles to sort his feelings. The resolution is a tremendous punch. It’s paired perfectly to Depeche Mode’s “Strangelove”. Relationships are complex enough. Factor in their circumstances and the story is unapologetic in handling the fallout.

It sets a stage for a present day reveal which harkens on the uncomfortable sins of the past. Readers watch as a reunion unfolds which has mixed results. There isn’t much time to process this event as the story heads into its’ close. Once here, Phillips leaves readers with another reveal that is sure to raise more eyebrows as Jessica continues to journey into mystery.

Flaviano and Renzi bring the intimacy and strain of Death and Lilah to the pages flawlessly. The panels take readers on a journey into their doomed union. Using a offset color range for the therapy session works to make each panel pop. From here, the art heads back into displaying the range of feeling between the lost lovers. It builds towards a strong image of Death with the song lyrics swirling around him. Nobody does this better than Tom Napolitano. This carries to the full page closing image. The art team drops one more reveal before parting with this very impactful chapter.

Delving into the secret past of Jessica’s parents take readers on quite the journey. Phillips crafts a mature and frank look at their union with excellent writing. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano deliver on huge moments and heartbreaking images. After reading this, there is no doubt on why this book stands out from the rest.

Loo brings in a character synonymous with Russell for this chapter: Moon Knight. The build towards his involvement delves into Russell’s mistrust and Bloodstone’s blind faith. Elsa’s refusal to quit on Russell gives flashes of hope amongst the chaotic scenario they find themselves in. Once that is cemented, the guest star makes his grand entrance.

Readers become locked in as the world of Khonshu gives some clarity. It comes at a peak moment. The plans of The Hood swing into an ancient evil. Loo’s writing sets a unique set-in to acquire it. This leads to a solid mid act filled with action. The story takes full advantage of the Red Band label. It is not one for the squeamish by any means. The epilogue lays a surprising twist onto readers before departing. It is playing the long game on the challenge and that’s nothing but a win for readers.

Dávila, Leisten, and Jimenez bring Russell’s guilt to life with a haunting panel. Seeing the dead ghosts of his “victims” leaves quite the impression. Prior to this, the panels reflect the emotional toll on both Russell and Moonstone. With their history, it adds to the drastic call for help.

The Moon Knight pages steal the show. A near full image ushers Khonshu into the spotlight. This is complimented by a full page shot of Russell vs. Deathwatch and his minions. From here, the pages show no mercy as the chaos breaks loose. It concludes with a more subdued full page image that questions who won this round other than readers.

With The Hood making the first move, Jack Russell gets some familiar back-up for his latest chapter. Loo crafts a fast paced journey with a haunting feel. For this entry, Comixology Originals is unleashing a new horror story that is making quite a buzz. Considering the creative team behind it, it’s completely justified. Handling the writing is the showrunner of Netflix’s Daredevil. The co-creator of Jessica Jones is on art duties. Mix their talents together and fans have much to be excited about.

BENEATH by Steven S. DeKnight, Michael Gaydos, Kate Sánchez and Tobin Racicot present a tale of survival through unnatural circumstances.

DeKnight blends in elements of grounded conflicts into the supernatural realm to craft an engaging tale. Deputy Sheriff Jess Delgado comes across as unlikely hope trying to pull off the impossible. With the tense relationship between detainees and guards, Delgado is pushed to her breaking point. The writing reflects the struggles as being equally great to the true horror lying beneath the surface.

This comes to the forefront early with her conflict with Pritcher. As they investigate the border attack, Delgado establishes herself as one not to tolerate any nonsense. From here, the pacing shoots forward building the horrors at hand. DeKnight slow rolls the true threat debut. It allows the audience to sink further into the growing fear.

Once the story arrives at its’ midway point, readers get clarity on what the unlikely group is now facing. The tone of the book splits with its’ conflict. the personalities involved are combustible enough. Add in the real threat and there’s much to balance. DeKnight doesn’t struggle with this. He keeps events leveled right through the final act.

At this stage, there is a fair share of classic horror themes along with a question of who is the true terror. It plays out to a satisfying finish. The closing pages end events as it should: leaving the readers wanting more.

This works to perfection with the art of Gaydos and lettering of Racicot. The panels reflect the seedy nature of human conflict. Pritcher’s demeanor stands out as a character you instantly dislike. It plays off Delgado’s stern, even-keel responses. The conflict between the residents at the detention center comes across as uncomfortable as expected. The reactions and body language shown speaks volumes of what the true horror of this issue was.

As for the supernatural side, the art delivers on crafting imposing evil. The deaths showcased are gruesome and unforgiving. Mixed with the coloring and lettering, they signify how brutal the true evil attacks are. It is not one for the squeamish. There is a bold full page splash bringing that reveal to readers. This is complimented by origin pages that switch the coloring and structure. Readers can appreciate the break from the dark, gritty setting of the book in this moment.

Gaydos and Racicot do a fantastic job of creating the frightening surrounds going into the close. It does feel like it’s directly out of the movies. There is loud action and high drama. Readers will be especially invested in the final pages. With simple lettering, it leaves this tale with a solid landing spot as all great horror stories would.

Combining a supernatural threat with the genuine conflicts of human nature, “Beneath” delivers a story with many layers underneath its surface. DeKnight constructs a chilling environment of lost hope. Gaydos and Racicot orchestrate the haunting images that will keep readers on edge. There’s much for horror fans to enjoy with this saga.

This is a tale of two stories. Both carry equal weight. Since its’ return, Grim has been spotlighting members of the supporting cast. Harold (featured on the cover) gets his minutes of Fame. Phillips crafts an ethical question surrounding his existence. It is a strength to his character, This also allows two key figures to have some of their history unveiled. It is a great opening lead mixed in with the rock and roll vibe this series is known for.

The other story jumps to present events. Catching up to where the world has gone to Hell (literally), Phillips bears the importance of Harold in his greater role. Seeing him mix it up with his “boss” made for a well-paced break in the drama. The build to confronting the present day horror gets another layer added. Once the showdown finally commences, the impact on the readers will be huge and worth the wait.

It is literally impossible to read an issue of Grim and not be completely blown away by the art and imagery. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolintano take the flashback moments and dive deep into the unpredictability of that era.

Under the words of Johnny Cash, Harold’s tale pops off the pages. The panels of view through Harold’s eyes are next level creative. This leads into a two-page montage that encompasses Harold’s journey. It’s filled with haunting lyrics, excellent coloring and show-stopping images. This team sets the bar extremely high for others to follow. Once readers arrive at the final panel, the parting image will make a loud statement as to a new chapter in Jessica’s path of destiny.

This element comes into play when the Order checks in. The conversation breaks up the serious tone with its’ awkwardness. Once Erica interjects, the mood shifts back to a more serious tone. Tynion reveals just enough of the past to keep readers in suspense.

The conclusion ends with a level feel. There is no extra drama needed. It is a conclusion that just says goodbye. In this line of work, there is no heartfelt goodbyes. It’s always strictly business as the final page states.

The art captures the uncertainty of the children who discover erica. Their reactions play into the unknown factor of their discovery. A two page sequence connects this point to readers with ease. Erica’s response to being discovered also carries a presence.

The build in this series has been purposely slow to have readers ready for the conflict. Brombal finally sets off the action in two big battles. One is Maven defending Jace’s “children” from Jolie invading the swamp. The other is René waiting to face off with the Butcher one on one. With the rising body count, the fights have become personal. Let alone the Houses of Boucher and Slaughter watching in the wings.

The writing delves into the manic behavior of Jolie. Risking hunters on her personal vendetta showcases how unhinged she has become. Maven pulls out some huge surprises as their battle commences. As for Jace and René, the writing shifts into making both very similar in actions. Their banter is very driven and strikes a few nerves. This builds towards a strong finish with a few tricks up the sleeve. Seeing how things are left, there is now way to even guess how the war will end.

Fuso and Muerto craft impressive fight scenes throughout the entire issue. Maven revealing her attack is a two page spread that readers will be raving about. Talk about a game-changer! René and Jace’s brawl is violent and emotionally draining. It holds nothing back as each page becomes more intense. Both fights end in ways that no one will see coming. The images rev up the excitement as there is one showdown left! Only one point is certain: there is no guarantee anyone survives.

The Butcher War level up its intensity and drama with an issue not soon forgotten! Brombal weaves two impressive battles that hit the emotional marks. Dunford and Radford give readers a quick history lesson through the chaotic surroundings. Hazel is a complex character to say the least. The set-up for the final confrontation with Haiden and company is solidly built. The narration walks readers into a sudden shift in gears. This leads to a unique final act.

Tying in multiple lore’s, the writing keeps readers on their toes. However, they won’t be disappointed with the infusions of style. This book still packs the one-liners and insanity that has become a staple of this series. One member of the Dead Squad steals the show on each panel. From the conclusion of the conflict, the epilogue is vintage horror fueled. It is a fitting farewell to a horror story that fits in any time period.

Balondo crafts images that will be lingering with readers long after this series has ended. The full page introduction of Hazel lights the fuse for the explosive action later on. The two page history lesson breaks up the story in a perfect spot. It breaks just long enough to shift speed into a wild showdown.

The imagery here doesn’t shy away from the gore. It embraces it. One character gets a legendary send-off as the conclusion races towards the finish. The closing pages capture the emotional outpouring of what has just transpired. It is only outshined by the closing panel. Tynion keeps things very simple with this chapter. Erica and a young child head into a Wal-Mart esque store. The clerks appear lost to what is happening. This series of events lean into Erica’s early days. Her banter with the young girl she’s trying to save plays out well. It helps to lighten up some of the darker elements at hand. Erica’s still growing her role.

The talk with Aaron shows her determination and unjaded nature. From here, the dialogue moves to the young girl. Her explaining Erica’s job provided a fine moment while Erica goes to work. The ending brims with anger and the cold demeanor that readers know from other Erica stories. Her journey feels like the long game payoff is coming, which is always a win for fans.

Dell’Edera and Muerto grant Erica a fun entrance into the story. The reactions of the employees range from doubtful to anxious. Erica’s reassurance into stopping the monster jumps off the page. It’s a subtle moment but fits the segment. This follows with a two page spread, leading into a vivid full page image of Erica and a chainsaw.

Pacing drives the fighting in this issue. Seeing Erica take on the monster felt huge. There’s little page time for the creature but using the supporting characters to describe the incident was solid. This works well with the action panels. The fallout comes across as cold and business per usual. Erica has a great walk-off panel that leads directly to where the early days continue onward. It’s fantastic storytelling!

The year is 1975. A young man is putting on some eye liner before heading to the school bus. As he leaves the house, his father draws his attention. Dad isn’t too keen with the eyeliner and barks orders to remove it. The young man hesitates and gets slapped for being disrespectful. The young man is Eddie.

The story jumps to 1985. Eddie is backstage at a show applying the eyeliner. A reporter is questioning Eddie about his family’s support. Eddie sells the “perfect” story. In the conversation, he slips up and mentions his solo project. Eddie’s drummer Saul hears this and is none too pleased. This causes some friction between the bandmates. Saul announces their friendship is taking a toll on his health. It’s agreed that Saul will play their current show but won’t after that. They head to the stage and begin their sold out show.

Readers watch as the high price of fame catches up with Eddie. It is an emotional toll that carries a heavy weight. The young boy from New Jersey bears some heavy scars. This builds towards a moment that changes everything. Its’ conclusion leads to a send-off that will hit in all the emotions. There is no way fans will see that final panel and not get a bit choked up before concluding the issue.

Phillips walks readers through the rock star life with an unforgettable issue. Eddie and his relationships with family and friends vary to extreme degrees. His father proves to be a source of pain and manipulation. Eddie shows him compassion through the years of abusive behavior.

It’s a stark contrast to his loyal best friend Saul. Eddie treats him as an after thought through the sacrifices Saul has made for him over the years. This all unfolds into the middle act where fate confronts Eddie head on. Heading into the final pages, Phillips leads readers into one direction but pulls a great swerve. it leads to a heart-wrenching moment that perfectly closes out a great read.

Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano bring out the best and worst of Eddie’s life with the art in this issue. The brooding disdain of Eddie’s dad pours out on each page. Saul’s reaction to Eddie’s non-caring attitude is one of desperate hope with no luck. Once they hit the stage, this dissolves into a bright two page splash.

Eddie’s demons don’t stay way for long. A post show party is filled with visions of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. The lyrics of “Boys Don’t Cry” come to life via Napolitao’s haunting lettering. It fills the air of a stunning full page image. What follows captures the shock and fear involved with rock n’ roll lifestyle. The closing image is an easy connect with readers. It packs an emotional toll that only this creative team can deliver.

With “Boys Don’t Cry”, the tragic tale of one of the series most beloved characters comes to the forefront. Phillps weaves in themes of loss, pain and redemption masterfully with the writing. Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano brings the bright lights and dark times of Rock N’ Roll to the masses with pin-point precision. After reading this issue, there’s no way anyone can dispute why this is comics’ coolest series each issue out.
