*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If you want action, you’ve come to the right place! Williamson loads this issue up with some high-octane moments. The Crimson Twins make an immediate impact. Their chase of Duke and co. leads to a dangerous call. Readers watch as even the best laid plans sometimes fail. It is a polarizing call to make. Knowing what else could transpire, the decision exemplifies what the Joes are all about.

This spills over into the fight’s next phase. No punches are pulled as the confines of the road get displaced. In its wake is a more domestic scene where the violence can’t stand. TRANSFORMERS #17 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, JORGE CORONA, MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Johnson keeps finding ways to break the Autobots. With Optimus loosing his grasp of reality, they are scrambling. Readers watch as Prime doesn’t have time to worry. He has to act fast in comparison to others. Beachcomber’s stance of conflict continues to stand apart. The writing shows a true neutral voice to the anarchy around him. It is fitting for the constant battles raging out of control.

This carries through to the Cybertron portion. The Autobots there make a play to gather help. It is full speed ahead as the action rages on. Elita steals the spotlight while handling her business. Considering how damaged Ultra Magnus has been, any signs of life here push the story along. Once the resistance breaks away, they give fans a monstrous moment. Hope may have arrived. The final page looks to be a true catalyst for change. A solid ending to the wild fighting at hand.

Corona and Spicer add more depth to Beachcomber’s mind frame. The images back up his claims of seeing a larger picture. It’s a big contrast to the state of Ultra Magnus. The near full page image shows the broken Autobot in a new state. Their images for Optimus Prime are small but effective. Knowing he may have lost control only sink their ship further.

The Cybertron portion is filled with emotion and action. It carries a Hollywood aura as the final resistance stand takes hold. Elita’s fighting is given a strong half page to convey her message. This goes toe-to-toe with Prime’s daring rescue attempts for the humans. With Bruticus and Devastator laying waste to Seattle, Prime switches gears to the defense. A half panel shows the fruits of his labor. It is quickly overshadowed by the final page. The full image welcomes a big surprise into the never ending conflict. This is just another day in the office for the high skilled creative team here.

THE LUCKY DEVILS #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

Professor Stane and Nurse Starr. Coller and Rake. Two humans. Two Devils. Their paths have crossed. A hellish plan to corrupt good souls is in full swing. The unlucky pair have no idea what’s in store for them. Next stop is the second level of Hell. Will they all be able to resist the tempting pull of Lust?

The Lucky Devils #2 by Charles Soule, Ryan Browne, Kevin Knipstein, and Christopher Crank takes readers along for another wild chapter!

Let’s take a deeper dive and see what unfolds now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Let the corruption begin! Soule pens a devious tale centered around the dangerous sin. The introduction of Onion Screw throws a dark humor injection to the latest issue. Screw’s sleezy charm works on the readers as he breaks down the pull of sin. Even his own plans look to rival Coller’s. Their inevitable encounter should be one for the ages.

Stane and Starr demonstrate the slow burn effect both devils are taking. Starr is being string against temptation. The writing shows the drastic measure taken to ensure Starr falls. There should be no surprises as to what lows are taken to hit goals. Fallouts keep moving the humans into new areas. Soule keeps a fair dose of laughs blended in to assist in pacing. The closing pages wrap up events on a strong point before descending next chapter.

The artistic visions of Browne are second to none. In the opening pages, Hell’s cruise liner is everything and more. Screw’s rise to power is detailed and crafted. The flashbacks hit their key points showing what evil he possesses. It’s overshadowed by his own proposal. Seeing his presentation come to life only spells more troubles to come for humans.

Starr and Stane’s reaction to their devils is deceptive in effect. The split page panels indicate the slow breakdown. There’s nothing over the top on their methods. This is saved for Rake. Browne’s art shows what levels she’s will to go to get what she wants. The results are an awkward panel when Starr achieves a goal. It is that kind of state of mind that gives this series its edge. The parting pages reveal a more celebratory feel. Considering what just happened, it is a solid place to leave before opening up another sin.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

It’s sinful to have a series this good. Soule and Browne bring out the bad in their favorite devils with this chapter. Strong writing keeps the dark themes concealed with sharp humor. Browne and the art team construct phenomenal imagery as the Devils continue their evil ways. There’s no shortage of win on this series.

THE HIVE #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Crime can carry a vicious sting to it. Mason Shaw is learning this the hard way. The Queen Bee wants to retain control of her hive by any means. Nothing is off limits on what she will do for this. Defiance will not be tolerated. When Shaw links up with some defectors, his life will never be the same again!

THE HIVE #1 by A. J. Lieberman, Mike Henderson, and Inaki Azpiazu welcomes readers into the world of sex, buzz and rock ‘n roll!

Let’s take a deeper dive into what all the buzz is about.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lieberman presents a very gritty aura to the fascinating concept of control. The opening foreshadows the Queens wrath. It gives the readers just enough to work off of as the story rewinds. Readers watch as the mature themes shine before heading into the criminal aspects. Once here, the tale begins to cement its’ foundation.

The Queen’s concept of biological control is very ingenious. Her demeanor is cold and calculating as she sets the stage. Readers get to witness this concept in action. A highway robbery display the power of control. It is intense and unapologetic. Much can be said for Shaw’s involvement. His introduction to this world has many layers behind it. Where events ultimately end up prove to be the start of an unforgettable journey.

Henderson’s art encompasses the dirty underworld Shaw resides in. The opening sequence is tense and harsh. The two page splash perfectly sets the tone for the remainder of the books. Once events rewind, the Queens vision starts taking shape. There are many mature images that are on full display. It adds to the seedy world which the Queen rules upon.

The heist provides a high paced display of power. Henderson and Azpiazu mix in blurred panels to display the bio hold. It leads to big action with a few shocks in the mix. None more surprising than how the robbery ends. Nothing is held back. This pushes towards the closing act. Shaw’s stat quo is flooded with a sense of anxiousness. His reactions never seem to break as secrets come to life. This leads to the full page ending. At this stage, readers are fully ready to delve deeper into a crime story unlike anything else.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

Biology and Crime may sound like a unique pairing. The life and times of Mason Shaw being to show readers how engaging this concept can be. Lieberman’s writing constructs the grimy and unforgiving world of the Queen. Henderson and Azpiazu present intense imagery which catapults this imaginative tale to new heights. The buzz is definitely real behind this one.

Thompson gives a big pay-off for long time readers with this issue. The slow burn method works to exemplify Essex’s importance to Kiros. Dagmar’s “interrogation” is prime example of this. Seeing how Essex and her team push unlocks secrets to readers’ delight. The writing hones in on the personal blow dealt with Dagmar’s revelations. It sets a course to an intense final act.

The world of Kiros is a visual win in its own right. McClaren makes each vision of the city stand out. This rings true when dealing with The Heights. The near full page image pops as it launches a final standoff. This mood carries into the drastic move made by the guilty party. All the expressions by Essex and her team cover many emotions. It elevates the scene to new levels as readers watch. The fallout out teases a gory situation but structure leaves it in the minds’ eye. Readers can sense the emotional height slowly lifting. A full circle moment caps off the chapter with a defiant message narrating it. Nothing but a huge win for fans of this series.

THE LUCKY DEVILS #1 by Charles Soule, Ryan Browne, Kevin Knipstein, and Christopher Crank (Image Comics)

Pacing mounts the action with each strike. Dylan is out-classed in his initial round. Even with his estranged dad Marcus in his ear, Dylan is challenged to survive. With a passing action, the comeback starts. It will thrill fans as Dylan grows in his role right before our eyes. The conclusion is a very strong one. Normally this would be enough, but as previously stated: Rogue Sun arcs don’t just “end.” The closing act provides a superb twist that will shake up the foundation yet again for the world of Dylan Siegel. Another excellent performance with the writing.

Abel and Marques bring out the fear and complexity of the Aviary’s coup. The set-up with Aviness and the Philistine slides into the scene gracefully. It instantly hits readers directly. G.I. JOE #2 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson never lets the foot off the gas with this issue. It’s non stop intensity (even in quieter moments). Seeing one of their own killed covers a range of emotions. This leads into a furious entrance by a Joe fueled on rage: Duke. It leads into a frantic resolution. Readers watch along with Cobra as their mission is audibled at the last second.

Once the dust settles, the writing throws a wild card into the mix. Risk’s first impressions do not go over well with the team. Losing a beloved member for a brash upstart is instant fireworks. TRANSFORMERS #15 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON, JORGE CORONA, SARAH STERN AND RUS WOOTEN (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Johnson spares no details in showcasing the devastation of the Decepticons’ attacks. Soundwave comes across as the cold, remorseless leader he needs to be. Even when other Decepticons don’t buy in, he remains unfazed. It’s a complete contrast from Prime. As he struggles to hang on, Prime winds up grasping for anything. His conversation with Beachcomber is prime example. It is a new look to the noble leader. This comes into full focus when he sees the devastation caused in fighting.

The Autobots new neighbors are none too happy to see them. There is a sense of fear and anger filling the pages in this sequence. Readers watch Optimus have a small breakdown. This is nothing but a delight to Soundwave. It is short-lived as another major character makes his return (with his new look). Even with the Cybertron side-plot, nothing outshines the return of a former Decepticon. The closing page proves that He didn’t come alone. Readers watch as a heavy hitter is introduced which spells certain doom for Optimus and Earth’s inhabitants.

Corona is back in art duties after a two issue break. The destruction in Tacoma is brutal and intense. It builds the tempo for the remainder of the issue. Soundwave appears menacing while standing in the chaos. This carries through the brief Cybertron stop. Cliffjumper watching his fellow Autobots cross a line strikes a nerve with the audience.

It is overshadowed by the dramatic return of the disgraced Decepticon. Corona and Stern present the new player’s entrance in a near full page. It speaks volumes as the conflict picks up. This leads into a fantastic two page spread. The Decepticon civil war is in full swing! Just when readers think they’ve seen it all, the last page drops. A BIG x-factor emerges, spelling certain doom. Its a great way to close out events for now, but certainly not for long.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

With Soundwave inching closer to complete control, a new player enters the game. Johnson fills the writing with emotion and action. Corona returns with Stern and Wooten to provide the impactful images that are always more than meets the eye. This series continues to set a high bar that few other books can continuously reach.

C.O.W.L. 1964 #3 (Black Market Narrative/Image Comics)

A member of C.O.W.L has fallen. Wildflame is dead. Skylander is the culprit. Using weapons designed by the Superhero union brings Gregory Warner into the public eye. The face of the Chicago Organized Workers League has a past allegation causing problems.

What will this latest challenge bring for The Grey Raven’s plans?

C.O.W.L. 1964 #3 by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, Rod Reis and Buddy Beaudoin (Black market narrative/Image Comics) dives further into intrigue in the Massiveverse saga.

Let’s take a closer look at where events stand now!

C.O.W.L. 1964 #3 by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, Rod Reis and Buddy Beaudoin (Black market narrative/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The writing splits this chapter into dealing with fallen heroes. Taking the story back to 1946 and 1955, Warner’s early scheming is given much room to grow. It gives a strong payoff with dealing with The Dart. As the blueprint is being laid out, there is some pause about buying into Warner’s plans. The result is a tragic turn. Its’ ramifications seem not to phase Warner as he still plots big no matter the cost.

In 1964, Warner is dodging the multi attacks on his overall goal. The writing shows him in his element. One moment, he’s swaying the public. Behind the scenes is another story. As the story shifts to Skylander, the mood is tense as actions start coming into focus. It never escapes the audience as how Warner’s plans have no regard for anyone else. The final act echoes that point with a parting flashback. Events conclude with a definitive statement on where things are going (even if they were in the past).

Reis opens the chapter with a unique vision for the panels. The flashbacks come with a mix of coloring. It opens as a black and white scheme. Once it starts rolling, certain splashes of color pop the art. This compliments the retro feel of the 1946 images. Readers sense the classic sense of superheroes. While temporary, it makes its mark before heading into darker territory.

Once the story shifts back to 1964, Reis goes again to the small color contrast images. It works to connect readers to the main characters involved in the drama. The only time that the book jumps into action is the 1955 Dart portion. At this stage, pacing helps to inject some fierce panels bringing the conflict to a head. From here, the story moves into its’ closing act. The story goes simpler with Warner getting the sole coloring. It balances out the high emotional toll taken before leaving events in a startling spot for the finale.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

The pen-ultimate chapter of C.O.W.L.’s return delivers on a highly emotional chapter of life and loss. Higgins and Siegel show the steep cost of Warner’s schemes with the writing. Reis constructs simple but dynamic images for the various time periods. With one last episode left, the stakes continue to rise around the Grey Raven’s ultimate goals.

BLACK CLOAK #10 by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey (IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Thompson wastes no time with the drama in the opening pages. The aftermath of the Kiros Supermax Prison attack leads Pax into action. Seeing Queen Taline in prison hits readers as they process the chaos surrounding the visit. Knowing the history between the two, Essex appears behind the eightball. Taline knows what’s coming and Essex isn’t ready.

This causes a shift in direction for the trio of Cloaks. The writing brings out the best and worst opinions of Essex as she tries being proactive. Her conversation with Iona is tense and hostile in certain aspects. It’s the guilt of Essex’s actions that start breaking her from the inside. This bridges to a surprise closing. The revelation in the parting panel leaves more mystery as the case slips further away from the Cloaks.

McClaren kicks off the visuals with a strong opening at the supermax prison. The wide panel image of Pax asking for Taline’s cell slows down the hectic surroundings. What follows next is a meeting that carries tensions in each panel. The view perspective through the window is a great touch to mix things up.

Essex’s journey leads her into two different paths. The enjoyment of helping Joya is a much needed break. Essex’s joyful reaction is short lived. Her conversation with Iona is less than friendly. It carries the pain caused from her previous actions. The tale of two Essexs’ lets readers know all is not forgiven as she tries helping to solve the case. It ultimately leads into the final act. With the closing panel, another clue is dropped that adds more complexity onto an ever growing case.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The latest visit to Kiros keeps readers guessing with many moving parts at hand. Thompson crafts a tense reunion with her writing. McClaren and Carey display the many sides of Phaedra Essex with excellent art. The mystery continues to grow which is always a win for the readers. Don’t miss it.

TRANSFORMERS #14 by Daniel Warren Johnson, Jason Howard, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A scorpion can’t help itself with its actions. It’s just its’ nature. Starscream is blinded by his obsession for power. Even in his broken state, the writing never lets this theme escape the readers. The uneasy alliance between Horton’s crew and Starscream is based on lies. Both are trying to use the other for their goals. One is well-versed in this aspect and flourishes as the story progresses.

The flashbacks to Megatron and Cybertron showcase the last sense of morals die inside the robotic body. Events lead into a new location but a few predictable directions. It comes across very solid as Starscream’s genuine arrogance flosses over the set-up. The closing act leaves nothing to chance as the true nature of evil emerges. It is a fitting conclusion for where the next phase of Starscream is heading.

Howard caps off art duties with some strong visuals. Seeing the new form of Starscream is debuted with a two page splash. The art sneaks in a few humorous panels (involving a cat) before stepping back into the drama.

The flashback moments bring Starscream full circle as readers watch his complete turn. The full page image of him and Megatron unleashing their terror won’t escape readers. It tips off the audience about what’s coming. Watching the long work play out answers many thoughts as the road to redemption beings. The parting image closes the door of the past while opening up a more dangerous one for the future.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The journey into a deadly Decepticon’s path of redemption closes on a solid note. Johnson slow builds the drama with the writing. Howard, Spicer and Wooton brings the misleading nature of a broken soul to life with the images. The Energon Universe had better brace for the unforgiving evil forthcoming.

G.I. JOE #1 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Talk about making a statement! Williamson gives both new and seasoned readers much to rave about with this chapter. The opening segment works to establish the initial team as they enter this new era. Using Duke as a narrator gives a unique perspective as to how he sees each member. The result instantly connects with the audience. In comparison, the COBRA introduction is more subtle and gives just enough to understand their motivations.

One character that looks to play a much bigger role is Risk. The brief welcome leaves quite the impression. Once that is completed, the pace picks up with no looking back. Williamson hits the gas as the action bolsters into high gear. The closing act brings out the best and worst of an inexperienced team. Stakes have been raised and just wait for what unfolds on the final page! It is a hell of a mic drop.

Reilly and Bellaire steps back into the Joe world after an incredible run on DUKE. The team welcomes readers with a two page splash. From here, members get introduced with present and past panels. The flashback sequences pop with Bellaire’s coloring throughout the issue. It delivers on some insight and reminisce on the past series.

Once panels shift to COBRA, the mood changes. The brooding evil slowly emerges. It caps off with a near full page image of the Commander testing a new weapon. Closing that moment is a smaller but impactful panel of the Commander celebrating. The art team also welcomes Risk into the fold with a great action packed portion of the book.

The calm before the storm is greeted with a fantastic two page spread of Duke and Destro. This launches into the final act. No punches (or shots) are pulled as the intensity ramps back up. There are many incredible action images to have readers excited. Events conclude with a show stopping final page that throws everything in flux. The full page image is sure to keep fans on edge until the next chapter drops guaranteed!

FINAL POINT: 10

IT HAPPENED ON HYDE STREET: DEVOUR #1 by Maytal Zchut, Leila Leiz, Alex Sinclair and Rob Leigh (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zchut layers the story to cover three generations of family. Each woman involved is at a different point where their feelings of image are at an all time high. Miss Goodbody plays the devil on the shoulder exploiting the fears each carries. It leads the family down a winding road of false belief and ultimate harm. Bringing the realistic nature of extreme weight loss plays perfect to cement a solid base for the story.

Once the tale shifts towards the youngest of the family's 3 leads, events change. The story gives off a sense of false hope. Can the broken cycle of mental pressure and physical harm be broken? Readers watch as Lily sees chilling examples of the results of their struggles. This leads to a fitting closing act. It constructs a lingering question before departing. The question of "did the end justify the means" will stick with readers post story. Bringing the realistic piece of horror to the forefront nails the landing. The Hyde Street brand adds another hit to their roster.

Leiz and Sinclair bring out the real terror of the subject matter. The feeling of doubt and despair pours off the leads throughout the story. Miss Goodbody looks maniacal as she pressures all to take her "offer" of Devour. Her full page splash gives the moment an exclamation point. In its aftermath, the users show off the shocking change. It hits readers with a shocking realization of what each has sacrificed on their goal to "look better".

The issue also has some excellent splash pages. Hyde Street in its' innocence camouflages the growing secret behind its' location. This leads to the climax of the unfolding horror. With another strong two page splash, a turning point is indented before the closing act. With a near full page, the image sends chills down readers spines as the horror strikes again. It's complimented by the final page. A full page image leaves readers with much to ponder as the chapter ends for now with a parting scare.

FINAL POINT: 9.2

The latest addition to Hyde Street tackles a real life horror with a unique spin. Zchut constructs a very grounded look at a scarring dilemma with building drama. ROGUE SUN #22 by RYAN PARROTT, NICK COTTON, BRUNO FRENDA, NATALIA MARQUES and BECCA CAREY (Black market Narrative/Image Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The writing crafts a great build with the mystery of the Sparrow Sister. Since returning from the Kinght Sun saga, Dylan has been forced to grow up fast. The writing puts him in a position where he has no choice but to adapt or perish under the weight of the mantle. The dynamic between Dylan and his estranged father/mentor shines in this issue. There are many unresolved issues which linger in every move.

Seeing Dylan question Marcus about infidelity raised up their drama a few notches. This plays into the encounter with the assassin. Dylan’s novice nature of interrogation leads into some more unique moments before the danger arrives. Once at this stage, the writing puts Dylan in a situation he is clearly unprepared for. This leads to a shocking result of his overconfidence. The other character building pages push forward but the last page steals the thunder back. Suffice to say, this mystery is only begun to reveal itself.

Frenda steps in for art duties and wastes no time settinga high pace. The flashback sequence with Dotty and Divinity balances quick action amongst Dotty’s reactions to events. A solid sequence of images brings Dylan into the investigation. It plays into the mystique of the Aviary, leading to a confrontation of suspects.

Dylan and Marcus’ “chat” reflects an emotional toll their status has gone through. Marcus’s eyes tell a story within the panels. This gets interrupted with the shakedown of the suspect. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Thompson instantly sets an intense stage in the opening pages. The encounter moves swiftly as Pax and Essex evade to survive. It leads to a quick escape but not without leaving clues. The writing shifts gears back towards Essex’s previous life as a Cloak. Her reputation with the city still provides conflict and disdain. None more evident than her previous relationships.

In dealing with Nida, the writing reflects the broken bonds left in Essex’s wake. Readers watch as the conversation sticks to business before ultimately heading back into the heartache. The closing act puts the case back front and center. With a new direction, Essex and company strive to stay one step ahead before they become the next victims.

McClaren goes big in the opening sequence. The reactions of Pax and Essex set the stage for the dangerous conflict. A full page spread locks in the moment as chaos is breaking out. The big imagery (along with Carey’s lettering) make an immediate impression on the readers.

The writing shows his calmness tested to hold onto control. This becomes apparent at the Unity Fund Gala.
