*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The focus of the story thus far has been Armstrong, the merry immortal, suddenly losing his immortality while his best friend, Archer has made it a mission to save his friend. Through their globe-trotting journeys, the pair has found a possible solution in the Golden Apples of Idunn. The apples have been under the watchful eye of Frig, a creature that isn’t exactly willing to give them up. During this time, they are confronted by another creature known as The Maw. Now captured and awaiting their fate, it seems that the pair (along with Frig) has finally met their end.

This issue opens up with the Maw about to feast but is stopped by soldiers working for the Eccentric, a man who’s had a long standing grudge against Armstrong for….his “behavior” in the 1970’s. It’s tough to blame Armstrong though as he was considered a “living specimen” as a part of the collection. That time has built to the Eccentric’s plan of revenge: stealing Armstrong’s last chance at immortality. It’s such a classic super villain moment that readers can fully appreciate.

Will the Eccentric pull off his scheme? An unlikely event happens that gives this story a solid shot of exciting drama. That moment is balanced out with the usual comedic pace that readers have come to know and love. The big moment here though will definitely have readers talking. It’s a great twist that really changes the pair forever (no pun intended). There is much to enjoy about this issue.

Foxe has really captured the voice of Armstrong with his work on this series. His moments in this issue really jump off the page. From the timely flashbacks to his shining action of this issue, Foxe gives him many layers that will connect with the reading audience. The pacing is great for hitting all the key components. At no point did anything feel forced or rushed. A very cool addition to the storytelling is the description of Archer’s fighting style and moves. The conclusion is one that sets a new direction out for the pair that is a surprise take, but effective one. Its a game-changing moment for the pair and one not to miss!

Fiorito presents another great issue for readers with the art duties. The flashback sequences were a nice break in the overall plot. The big moment of the book was presented with all the sudden impact one would expect. Action spots connect for some noteworthy fragments in this issue, with one being very important as the catalyst to what redefines the duo. Readers are also left with a final page that will have some questions raised for the future of the pair, but a big win for the readers.

“What a long strange trip it’s been….” thus far. The duo has been on a quest of epic stakes as Armstrong, the long thought immortal appears to have lost his gift. Archer, his peaceful walking weapon best friend, has not given up hope on saving his friend. The past two issues have taken us to far places within the Valiant Universe but with no success. That is until the “Hail Mary” plan is set: rumors of “Golden Apples” in Norway that might hold the key. However, the Essentric has sent the Maw to recover Armstrong for his collection.

The pair has their hands tied up first with the guard of the apples: FRIG. She is not willing to give up those apples without a fight. The pair is outmatched and when Frig throws Archer down a pit, the story shifts from Norway….to the Faraway! Once there, the pair pleads their case to Frig, who gives her story to them in exchance, there appears to be a truce to try finding a way back. A portal opens but no good plan ever works in their favor. The Maw has tracked them down. Readers get a full glimpse of what Maw is all about. How does the now trio fare? Will they get home? Does the Essentric win? Readers need to check this issue out to get those answers and then some!

This book is so damn entertaining. Foxe writes well placed humor throughout this comic. The unlikely pair’s personalities shine thru yet again. The story is over the top fun and carries that energy throughouthe book. Even when they face off against Maw, it never looses that cool “odd Couple” vibe which makes this book great. Frig will be a fan favorite when it’s all said and done. She fits in perfectly with the pair. Hopefully this isn’t the last story we see her in. Readers have a lot to enjoy with the writing here.

On the art side, Fiorito takes readers on a great trio with this issue. From the fight with Frig to the wee spent in the Faraway, each moment feels different and pushes the story along at a great pace. the little moments of humor drawn in works well . Frig’s origin panels are prime example of that. No spoilers here, but I did have a good laugh seeing some “visitors” on one in particular. Maw’s appearance shifted the tone of the book and rightfully so. I’m very curious to see how that part of the story plays out.

Side note: Nobody does a recap page like Valiant Entertainment. Huge fan of their quick recaps.

Last Issue, Armstrong suffered an injury from an attack that our favorite immortal wasn’t healing from. Seeing that this might be the end of the road, Archer, the skilled peaceful weapon who is Armstrong’s best friend, is desperately trying to solve this mystery. Archer has made a list of possible resources to find Armstrong immorality. Their first outing goes as well….as you would think. The rest of the issue keeps the pair on saga after saga checking off the list.

Will the pair find success? That’s the question being asked. There’s also forces working against them (per last issue) that are following them along the way. How does this factor into Archer’s plans? Can Armstrong survive with what his bestie has planned? It’s such a fun read that trust me, breaking it down any further would take away all the excitement.

What an absolutely fun issue. Foxe delivers on bringing the laughs and action within this issue. Being the optimist, Archer trying to save his friend at all costs. His upbeat demeanor is only matched by Armstrong’s “whatever’ attitude. It’s a great blend of personalities that gives this book such good moments. The moments on Archer’s list are entertaining to say the least. It is never a dull moment with this pair. Readers will have much to enjoy within these pages.

Fiorito does a great job making each stop on Archer’s list stand out and feel different. The Australia stop had me actually laugh out loud when I read the panel. Another solid showing of Archer’s fighting skills in this issue as well. It’s a nice touch when the description is added to explain what he’s doing when it’s a noteworthy move/strike. Armstrong’s reactions to this chase is another strong point of the issue. Nice set-up for next issue with the final panel shot.

Overall, Valiant’s best friends continue their return with an exciting adventure that locks in readers from the opening page. Foxe plays up to the pair’s “odd couple” strengths with the writing while Fiorito creates some memorable moments while equalizing the funny and the fighting. THE BOYS (SEASON 3 - AMAZON STUDIOS/PRIME VIDEO)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. However for this edition, we’re reviewing a TV series based off an incredible comic series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The Boys from Amazon Studios returns to Prime Video with the first 3 episode debuting on June 3rd. I was fortunate to be allowed an early screening of the new season so here are my SPOILER FREE takes from the Boys season 3

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

In case you’re new to this franchise, “The Boys” takes a different look at superheroes than you normally see. “The Seven” are the world’s greatest heroes sponsored by Vought, a corporation that isn’t anything that it seems. Think “Justice League” meets “Youngblood” from Rob Liefeld’s debut book for Image Comics in the 90’s. These “heroes” live and die by public image and popularity ratings. Vought goes to immense measures to cover up their power abuses and trust me, over 2 seasons, there has been plenty.

The Seven started the series with a lineup comprised of Homelander (played by Antony Starr), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott ), Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell), A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), The Deep (Chace Crawford) & Translucent.

Almost a mirror image of the DC Comics’ iconic Justice League Original 7 Lineup:

Homelander = Superman

Black Noir = Batman

Queen Maeve = Wonder Woman

A-Train = The Flash

The Deep = Aquaman

Translucent = Martian Manhunter

Starlight = Green Lantern

but these individuals are VASTLY different than the DC counterparts.

Opposing all that they are is “The Boys”, led by Karl Urban - Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capone) & Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara). This group has one simple mission: take down the Seven and Vought at any costs.

Homelander (Antony Starr)

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

During this ongoing struggle, viewers have seen members of the Seven killed, disgraced and replaced after being ousted. Some were more morally challenged (Looking at you Stormfront ) and ultimately defeated! Viewers have also seen Butcher and Hughie pushed and forced to grow together whether they were ready or not. Factor in the Romeo & Juliet style romance between Starlight and Hughie and this show has won fans over with its’ over the top moments balanced out with brilliant character building that challenge what we know of “super heroes”.

Season 3 picks up a year later from the events of Season 2. The Boys have now gone legit as they now work for a government agency. Instead of Butcher calling the shots, they now have to answer to Hughie who oversees the group for the agency. On the other side of the fight, Homelander is dealing with his public embarrassment being connected to the defeated Stormfront and what she truly was. With public opinion weighing so much, the cracks of Homelander’s psyche appear to show through more and more. The ceasefire that has been establish since the fallout of season 2 slowly starts to fade away as old habits die hard between the hated enemies.

Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd) Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles)

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

The big X-Factor in their latest conflict is Butcher has now acquired something that grants powers for 24hrs. Where the group’s whole identity has been based around taking the Supes down since power in the wrong hands is dangerous has now been thrown right back in their faces. What is Butcher going to do with “an even playing field” as he said for the first time during this ordeal. However, that’s not the only new element thrown into this highly combustible mix.

Season 3 also leads to an addition to this world of heroes: Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles). Soldier Boy was the first superhero whose legacy is legendary. The easiest comparison is Marvel Comics’ Captain America, but this isn’t your normal leader of the Avengers. When one of history’s most legendary “good guys” returns to the world, how will he fare in this battle? The stakes have never been as high as they are this season. Can Butcher finally defeat Homelander or will the flagship member of the Seven continue to be the thorn in the sides of both the Seven and The Boys?

Starlight (Erin Moriarty) The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd) Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

Starlight (Erin Moriarty)

Being a Spoiler free review, trust me when I say that this season lives up to the standards set forth by the previous seasons. The moral questions of Super Heroes doesn’t stray but evolves within these eight episodes. For being a short season in comparison to other shows, “The Boys” waste no time getting into a rhythm with very little cases of “filler” scenes. This is largely due to the fantastic acting on the show.

Antony Starr deserves to be in all award contention for his portrayal this season. Starr brought out the truly broken character of Homelander. While last season focused more on him trying to balance connecting to his son and being manipulated by Stormfront, Starr really sinks his teeth into showcasing the fall from grace from America’s “favorite” superhero after being publicly disgraced. How does someone, let alone one with his powers, come back to win a public over that has clearly left him broken? Viewers will be locked into each episode to witness how this all unfolds.

Not to be outdone, Moriarty steals scenes battling Homelander’s antagonizing of her character. There’s also some great moments with Jack Quaid showing the struggle of trying to have a relationship with someone NOT a Supe and how that affects their lives. Moriarty & Quaid have fantastic chemistry on screen and gives a small sense of realism to this wild world they live in. Extravagant might be the perfect word to describe this world because there are moments that will leave viewers speechless and one episode in particular which pays homage to one of the most notorious stories in the Boys comics.

Ackles also shines thru this season as the hero the world “thinks” they know. His mannerisms match what you would expect from someone of Soldier Boy’s background in this story. His portrayal felt fresh and will standout on its own. There are differences between Solider Boy & Captain America and that’s not a bad thing. Viewers will definitely know the difference between the two as the season goes on. Ackles was a superb addition to an already stacked cast of talented actors.

The writing is as sharp and poignant as ever. Showrunner Eric Kripke and the rest of the executive producers (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, along with comic creators Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson to name a few) make this show still engaging within a pop culture audience that gets over-exposed to the superhero world quite often. Everything about this show hits all the checkmarks for what you want to stand out with a story like this. It’s not for everyone but then again, the world of superheroes isn’t always good vs. evil all the time either.

Overall, The Boys delivers another incredible season. The outstanding performances from Antony Starr and Moriarty will get rightful praise but the rest of the cast stepped up to match them throughout this run. There is much to enjoy in this world of supes vs. everyone. Don’t miss it when it debuts on Prime Video on June 3rd with the first 3 episodes, then weekly after that.

Hit me up on Twitter and let me know what you think of The Boys season 3. Special thanks to Amazon Studio and Prime Video for allowing the ODPH early screener access. Thanks for reading.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Since his re-emergence, Peter Stanchek has been the center of a LOT of attention. Waking up with no memory and trying to stay alive, Peter connects with Cici and Young Ago, fellow Psiots that are standing up to authorities trying to hold back the people. With a new found sense of purpose, Stanchek now uses his powers to be a symbol off hope. However, there is a force at play that don’t want to see him succeed. That force is The Renegade, who as we’ve found out thru this series is the “evil” side of Stanchek. This goes to show a fraction at how powerful the Harbinger is: He literally rewired his own brain! Unfortunately, this corrupt version of the Harbinger doesn’t want peace and hope .He wants to watch the world burn.

With Stanchek’s return, readers did also see a return of a fan favorite of the Valiant Universe: Faith aka Zephyr. With their past, it was only a matter of time until she confronted her old “friend”. As Faith enters the fray, the Renegade makes his moves well known. The Renegade starts activating Psiots and preying on their pain and fears. While trying to stop the Renegade, our hero is shot IN THE HEAD by the assassin Blam. This isn’t a bait and switch moment. Peter’s brains are literally leaking all over the street! After some “motivation” from Ago while unconscious, Peter literally heals his own head wound?! Regrouped and refocused (with CiCi now activated in her powers), The Harbinger leads his team against the Renegade and his army of corrupt Psiots with the fate of Psiot City in the balance.

Starting this issue off is our hero leading his team directly into battle. Readers get a glimpse of a solid showcase of what this “team” can do. There is also an interaction between Faith and Blam that leaves a thought of more interactions between them are coming. However, fans see the battle that they’ve been waiting for. It delivers on tying everything back to where we started this series: “Who Is Peter Stanchek”? The conclusion is a fitting one and leaves some questions on can Peter “Be Better”?

Kelly & Lanzing close out this adventure on a very strong note with leaving more questions on the future of the Harbinger. Their run has been based on the theory of can Peter “Be Better”? From where readers witnessed his start to now, the answer is a resounding YES. This latest story has been one of redemption at the cost of fixing his broken soul. Their creative way of demonstrating Stanchek’s powers is one that I will personally miss from this book. The conclusion of the final battle almost felt anti-climactic until you go back and see what the meaning behind it was. To be better, Peter has to forgive himself and give himself another chance. It’s creative and left some doors open on the eventual return.

As for the art, Rodriguez goes back to the strong mental imagery of issue #1 and shows readers that the true battle was never of physical power, but that of mental will. There is an excellent back-to-back 2 page spreads where Peter falls into water that explains this perfectly. The moments feel big between these two. The ending visual of the battle resonates to the rest of the characters of the book. It l leave readers with a varying opinion as previously mentioned until they really break down what happened in this conclusion. The final panel shot is a very fitting one to cap this current volume off on.

Overall, The Harbinger #8 closes the latest saga of Peter Stanchek off with strong writing & amazing artwork. The creative team of Kelly, Lanzing & Rodrigeuz crafted a compelling tale of self discovery and self-closure all while balancing the unpredictable world of one of Valiant’s most powerful beings all the while. Personally when (and I can’t stress “when” instead of “if” enough, especially with a movie in development. ) we see the Harbinger return, the same creative team is back on the book. Their energy to the character was a fresh & welcomed take.

The answer of “Who Is Peter Stanchek” is answered while seeing a new status quo established for Psiot City when readers will see him next. Make a point to get to your local comic shop and get caught up on this latest adventure.

Hit me up on Twitter and let me know what you thought of Harbinger #8. As always, thanks for reading.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue starts out with a mysterious stranger hiding in the background of New York City. Invisible to all, the figure moves forward looking for their target. Readers don’t wait too long to find out who this character is and who they’re after. While tearing thru a snake worshiping cult, Conan The Barbarian is confronted by none other than DEATHLOK, who’s looking to punish the Cimmerian for assaults on the time-stream. This meeting goes exactly as you would envision it ( and I wouldn’t have settled for anything less!).

The Cult that Conan was tracking down has also drawn the attention of Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson) Daredevil (Elektra). They were investigating a deadly thief in an Alchemax Lab. Weapon H have a run-in that is anything but cordial with Black Knight (Dane Whitman). In arguably the most “calm” moment in the book is the interaction with Cloak & Dagger. All these characters have their own issues going on during this time but are all drawn together during an event that shakes up them to their core! What happens next truly lives up to the name “SAVAGE”! Once all the players join the fray backing up Conan against Deathlok, the throwdown is one for the ages. The resolution though….no one could predict what happens next. The final page will have readers fired up to see where the saga goes from here!

CREATIVE BREAKDOWN

IN PEPOSE WE TRUST! Obviously if you know his previous works (and you should!), “Savage Avengers” couldn’t be in better hands. This lineup of characters is going to be very fun to read their adventures each month. BTW, What a way to open the series! From the minute Conan came barging in on the cult, the tempo for the book was set. The weapon of choice that the cult acquired is one most fans wouldn’t think of on the spot, but once I saw what it was, I marked out! Whenever I see that weapon, I immediately see that Kirby Cap cover pop up. The story involving the other characters prior to “the event” was a perfect change of pace moment. This worked extremely well with Cloak and Dagger, who seem to be the wildcards of this group. In comparison to the other members, they don’t appear to be that “savage” but I have no doubt Pepose has big things planned for the fan favorite duo. Don’t let those character moments fool you. When it came time for the action, Pepose crafted some amazing action moments that delivered for the fans. Excellent final set-up of the story to close out.

Magno really brought those action panels to life and then some with this book! Conan vs. Deathlok had that “big fight feel” that readers would expect. There were no shortages on how vicious this fight was. Mix in when the rest of the team crashes the party and you’ve got a non-stop adrenaline ride in the MCU. Those fight scenes will have fans talking for all the right reasons. Battles are brutal and define what this book should be about. Great full page shot of the team during the “I Bring You Madness” moment. The Artwork is very strong throughout this issue and I can’t wait to see what visuals are coming for the next issue’s adventures. .

FINAL CALL

Overall, Savage Avengers #1 gives readers a relentless, action packed debut that is an absolute can’t -miss addition to your pull list. Superb writing and phenomenal art ushers in this new team to the LCS. Don’t think this is “just another Avengers” book. The creative team waste no time in presenting a group of Avengers you can’t help but follow along on their stories. Make a point to get on-board now and don’t miss a minute for what is going on with this book!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kudos to Valiant for always putting a recap page in before most issues so new readers can always jump in and catch up on a series.

The ironclads have been through a lot during their time on Xeru. From starting out as simple workers looking for the Pure to sustain the Alphan military, their journey has been anything but easy. When one of their own Sam is killed on a mining mission when Sgt. Troy leaves him to die, Peris steps up to lead the revolyt back and ultimately is responsible for Sgt. Troy’s death in retailiation. Once the group returns to their home, they are confronted by the Alphan military. Peris is taken away and the rest are almost certain to fall until some luck falls their way. Suffice to say, this group has become battle tested in a hurry.

This issue jumps in to where Lela has now taken up the leadership role and is planning on a rescue mission for Peris. There’s one problem with this: the Ironclad suits are not meant for that kind of battle but luckily there might be a way to fix that situation. Readers are about to witness the genesis of what these heroes are made of and the fight for freedom.

Meanwhile, readers meet Governor Dohman. He’s got some plans in the works and Peris plays a big part in those. What are the “Lost Suits”? All the while, Lela is bringing the troops to the forefront as they march to battle. The playing field has leveled a bit with these Ironclads making a play to fight the Alphans head on and free Peris. How will this ultimately end? It’s a gutsy call to attack but this group has had nothing to lose from the beginning. What’s one more mission, right?

The story is really starting to its’ stride with this issue. Lela has become the character that fans will be rallying around. There’s also a great moment with Jac that shows how much he’s grown as a character. This group of individuals are finally coming together as a team. Once you see the team ready to go, readers can’t help but be excited about the next phase of this story. The introduction of Governor Dohman and his plans add a nice twist to this saga as well.

Garcia’s art really shines in this issue. Readers get a great team shot as the ironclads level up. They also get some great action panels where we see how this team fares against a real threat. The breakdown of Dohman’s search for the Lost Suits caps off with a last page readers will be locked in with anticipation for the next issue of this story. This venture into another side of the Valiant Universe has been well worth the trip thus far for readers with no signs of slowing down.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING FOR SERIES AND ISSUE #6 ***

The story centers around a group of supernatural vampires who have stayed in the shadows of “normalcy” by running a diner. Blending in society undetected has been one of the biggest ways of survival for this “family.” Anything else leads to a whole world of problems that they can’t afford to test. However, when one of the younger members, Alex, breaks away searching for something more. This new epiphany comes via inspirations from superheroes. After stopping a crime, Alex follows into the world of becoming a vigilante. The taste of something new attracts Joy, another younger member of the group, to join the crime-fighting ways. This doesn’t sit well with Ian and Cynthia, the oldest of the group, who know what’s at stake. Even with the do-good intentions, things fall apart in epic fashion to where we are now. The first story arc is must-read with some very epic surprises throughout that you need to read to believe.

As the "family” picks up the pieces from the fallout of their last adventure, the landscape has changed. Ian, the head of the family, has been missing. Readers do catch up on where is at and it’s a lot to process coming off the heels of issue #5. Cynthia has taken over running the diner with Alex and Joy taking a more increased role with covering shifts at the diner. Being vigilantes has to take a back seat to keeping up the illusion that everything is fine not to draw any suspicion. However, this lasts for only so long as the young duo gets some time to investigate a disturbance at the museum. What they discover is a complete surprise that unfolds into another decision for one of the family to make. Factor in that our heroes may not be the only ones fighting crime as readers get a last page that will have them talking until next issue.

Zdarsky brings back everyone’s favorite diner staff in a very solid issue. Coming off the big reveal in issue #5, Ian’s story will be the one to watch with this arc. It’s a perfect way to open the issue up. The new antagonist hits the ground running and wait till you see his first move! The back and forth between Alex and Joy gave some new perspective on their new status quo. Being superheroes is one thing but being vampires also throws a block in finding normalcy and how they perceive a way to achieve it. How these heroes handle what’s coming up next is going to be something special.

Loo brings our heroes back in a fantastic way. Bringing Ian’s story and how it ties into the past was an excellent visual. Also seeing the “villain” of this issue return was a fun twist. The strongest part was the emotional talk between Joy and Alex. Loo’s art really brought out the full emotion of what was happening there. It served as a solid reminder that there are lives behind the mask. Seeing how the world of the supernatural comes to life in these pages is really a fun treat for readers.

With the rangers away finding a new command center, Earth has been left open for some visitors to stop by and stake claim. King Aradon and his forces have shown up to Earth with only the Green & Red Rangers to stop them. Zordon is calling the gameplan to hold steady but Matt (Green Ranger) takes the lead to confront the invaders. Rocky (Red Ranger) has his young siblings with him and can’t break away to assist due to protecting his secret identity. How will this fare for our heroes?

Meanwhile, the rest of the team is in on Leonis in search of another command center. Once the “Oceans’s 11” style plan is made, the team makes their move against King Veiron. The reigning King has all the information they need to acquire their new home but securing said info isn’t going to be easy. Can the team pull off the big score here? And what did Alpha do?! Read the issue and find out.

Groom continues his run on Mighty Morphin with a very solid read. With the two stories happening here, things can easily get lost in the shuffle but at no point did I feel that happened here. Matt & Rocky’s story being Earth’s last line of defense really picked up steam with some excellent action sequences & seeing Zordon make a change in a long time Ranger rule gave it a nice spin. As for the other half, I’m really enjoying the “heist” story (even though it’s against “The Lion King” and for good reason). There’s some fun moments that readers will enjoy with that heading to next issue.

Hidalgo lets loose with the action for this issue with a great sequence involving the Green Ranger making his play against the invaders. Readers will most definitely enjoy those panels. Another standout moment was Vieron’s gala where the rangers make their move. Very cool visuals here and Alpha stole the show! Excellent final page to close the book out on.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In case you’re reading Archer & Armstrong for the first time, they have been around the Valiant Universe since it’s inception in 1992. There are some classic stories in that initial run to their reboot in 2012 that are worth checking out from your LCS. Valiant also has a recap 101 page explaining the current basics to new readers in this issue as well.

Archer is a highly skilled martial artist & marksman who’s sole purpose in life was to kill “The Devil” aka Armstrong, an immortal with a knack for drinking and adventures. Once that situation was cleared up when Archer finds out the truth behind the people who raised him, these two became best friends and thus their escapades become the word of legend in Valiant lore.

For this story, Archer has to bail out Armstrong of another situation where SHOCKER Armstrong is dealing with an altercation with people “with some rakes and hoes” who steal his magical satchel while having a few beverages. During this incident, Armstrong’s ear is cut off.

Normally this would be bad, but Armstrong is immortal so it will grow back, right? Apparently not so much. With Armstrong’s immortality in question, the ever noble Archer sets out to find the truth behind this problem. Thus the adventure begins……

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ISSUE! Now keep in mind, I’’m an old school Valiant reader & the best friends was one of my favorite books. Seeing how Foxe has brought them back, this issue couldn’t be any more perfect. It has great usage of word bubbles to explain both main characters (see panels below) so throughout the issue, when they’re doing anything noteworthy, there is an explanation or clarification for. The story gives a new twist to “Can an immortal die?” There are some exciting twists to this tale that readers can look forward to with this series.

Fiorito does an excellent job on art duties for this issue. Readers see first hand what Archer is capable of when you mess with his bestie. The description of each fighting move is a nice touch. Seeing the banter between our heroes was another great point of this issue. From Archer’s frustration to Armstrong’s devil may care reactions, this issue had stand-out visuals that really made this a truly fun read.

Power Rangers Universe #5 by Nicole Andelfinger, Simone Ragazzoni, Mattia Iacono, & Ed Dukeshire from Boom Studios has been a very fun read into the story behind the Phantom Ranger. With only two issues left, how does this story shape up now? Let’s jump into this issue and find out, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue picks up where the Spectrum Rangers bet on themselves and appear to have won. They found a way to sustain morphing without killing themselves in the process. Now powered up, they’re ready to take the fight to the Dark Spector’s forces. Readers will enjoy all the action going down in this issue. As for the Morphanaut, his battle with the general becomes more than anyone expected with revelations exposed.

This moment becomes especially emotional & ultimately becomes the reason behind a desperate but noble action he takes later in this issue. The fallout with this battle carries thru the rest of the story as our heroes think they have the momentum on their side, until a final play is made where all bets are off heading into the final issue.

Andelfinger does a nice job with the build-up for the “big” reveal in this issue. It’s another element that is connecting the Morphanaut to the readers. This entire series, they have seen him go thru so many battling emotions that once we are at this point in the story, the moment becomes greater than expected. It also adds more weight to the final page of the book knowing what was done. The rest of the issue was solid action with a good dramatic fallout bit that works. Excellent job.

Ragazzoni & Iacono really made those action scenes pop off the pages here. They were great showcases on how upgraded their power set was. The “revelation” during the fight between the General and Morphanaut was very well done. There are some great panel shots of the emotional toll in this issue to put an exclamation point on that. Fantastic final page heading into the finale.

As B has been working for the government in exchange for finding a way to end his existence. The relationship has become very strained due to the actions of Dr. Caudwell, who has ulterior motives for working with B.

As this issue kicks off, there is an explosion of energy where B had been stationed underground. The blast kills some soldiers working the assignment and the energy taps into Diana, B’s only real “friend” in this arrangement and knocks her out. B is also missing from his chamber. Where this should be considered an absolute disaster is spun as a win by Caudwell. B’s saga during this issue is one readers need to check out for themselves cause… wow, it goes places!

Reeves and Kindt continue to take this story in some interesting directions. Caudwell finally unveiling his master plan was a cool twist to the story. It’s one that wasn’t unexpected but it also hits some strong notes on what levels this character will go to achieve his plan. B’s story is also very well set up here. There are many layers to this final arc that will have readers hooked till the end.

Garney delivers on some fantastic art in this issue. The big 2 page explosion scene really jumps off the pages. The panel set-up for B’s story this issue was very creative as well. Using a blank page to build up a moment works well for this issue. Great cliffhanger ending page to cap this issue of as well.

THE HARBINGER #7 (VALIANT ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this edition, we’re taking a look at the penultimate (SAY IT AIN’T SO!) chapter in the latest adventure of Peter Stanchek. The Harbinger #7 by COLLIN KELLY, JACKSON LANZING, ROBBI RODRIGUEZ, RICO RENZI
& HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU by Valiant Entertainment has been on point since it’s debut. Where we last saw our lead character, it was definitely a mic drop cliffhanger moment, so let’s now waste any more time and jump into breaking this issue down, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Since his return appearance, Stanchek has been drawing attention from many people of the Valiant Universe. Obviously being one of the most powerful people on the planet will do that. Having his track record of actions will cause that as well. As this series has progressed, readers have found out that Stanchek has rewired his brain (literally) and become dedicated to be a beacon of hope for the people of Psiot City. This doesn’t go as easy as planned because he has one force standing right in his way: himself. The “evil” version of Stanchek is known as the Renegade who is trying to unleash chaos on the city.

From the fallout of their initial encounter, the Renegade has been working to build up an army of Psiots to assist in his plans. Harbinger’s mission is clear to stop “himself” at all costs. Luckily, he has some help in an old friend Faith aka Zephyr along with Cici and Young Ago. While en route flying to find the Renegade, Harbinger is SHOT IN THE HEAD by the assassin Blam!

This issue picks up literally as our hero is bleeding his mind out! With Cici and Ago trying to save Harbinger, Faith goes right after Blam. All the while, the Renegade has started the initial shot on his attack on Chicago with his army ready to go. Readers get a small glimpse of what’s to come if our heroes fail. Can our hero come back from Death’s door? Readers have seen Stanchek pull off some miracle moves before. Does he have one more left in his sleeve? And if so, is he ready for the battle ahead?

Kelly & Lanzing out do themselves on story ideas with this one! Their take on Harbinger and what Stanchek is capable with his powers is such a cool take. If anyone had questions of how powerful of a character he is had them answered with this issue. When they dive into moments like his “repair work”, it turns into the strongest part of the story. With all his powers, Stanchek is as fragile as ever finding his way to “Be Better”. The rest of the characters had solid moments as well with a final shot worthy of heading into a final battle.

Rodriguez crushes another issue! Holy Smokes! The imagery of Stanchek putting his mind back together was incredible! Rodirguez’s style is such a complement to the story. The full panel pages were excellent as well as the Renegade unleashing his first attacked (last picture in this blog) There’s no book out that captures such a unique trippy feel like Harbinger. It’s one of the best books out right now with a creative team that is leaving a tough act to follow. There’s much to enjoy with this issue.
